Mercedes drew online criticism after posting a candid debrief with George Russell and team principal Toto Wolff following the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix. Some commenters objected to the video’s tone and timing: Russell called his race “terrible,” and the team shared the exchange after he had finished fourth while teammate Kimi Antonelli won.
What happened in the Mercedes video?
In the video, Russell spoke bluntly about his difficult race and the team’s starts. SportBible reported him saying, “That was a terrible day. The starts again, not good enough.” He also discussed problems involving battery charging at the safety-car restart and a software glitch. SportBible’s March 29 report covered the clip and the reaction to it.
Wolff responded: “It was like you said – that’s how the game goes. Sometimes these things go against you, or for you, and it’s another 19 races to go.” Russell later said, “It’s just like somebody from above was not going to let us.” These are lines reported from the video, rather than an independently verified transcript.
Why did some fans criticize the post?
The reported criticism centered on the decision to publish such a candid conversation immediately after a frustrating race. SportBible highlighted selected social-media comments calling the video embarrassing or ill-judged and urging Mercedes to fix the car. Those posts illustrate the reaction reported online; they are not a poll and do not establish how Mercedes fans overall felt.

The clip also landed amid a close teammate contest. After three rounds, Antonelli led Russell by nine points, according to Sky Sports’ March 31 report. Russell said he felt early-season problems had affected him more than Antonelli. That context helps explain the scrutiny around the exchange, but it does not prove favoritism, internal conflict or a deliberate message from Mercedes.
What went wrong for Russell in Japan?
The criticism of the video was distinct from the race events it discussed. Mercedes finished first and fourth: Antonelli won, while Russell came home fourth. Oliver Bearman’s crash brought out the safety car during the leaders’ pit-stop sequence. Antonelli stopped under the safety car; Russell had pitted shortly before it, leaving him on the less favorable side of the timing.

Russell told Sky Sports, “One lap difference and we’d have won the race, but then obviously we just made a meal of it thereafter.” He also described being unable to recharge his battery at the restart. Sky Sports reported that Lewis Hamilton passed him before Russell recovered to fourth. Sky Sports’ race report details the timing and Russell’s account, while Formula 1’s March 30 report relayed Wolff’s view that the race went against Russell.

What the backlash does—and does not—show
- It shows: Some online commenters objected to the video’s tone and the choice to post it after Russell’s difficult race.
- It does not show: How widespread that view was. The cited coverage offers selected comments, not a measured audience response.
- It does not establish: Why Mercedes chose to publish the clip or whether the team issued an official response. The reported material does not settle either point.
