The Dodge Challenger Hellcat makes the strongest case for “ultimate muscle car” through its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8, big-output variants, and unmistakable role in the closing chapter of the HEMI-powered Challenger. “Ultimate” is an enthusiast’s judgment, not an objective ranking: the available manufacturer sources establish what Dodge offered, but do not prove the Hellcat outclassed every Mustang, Camaro, or other muscle car.
What makes the Hellcat stand out
The Hellcat’s defining feature is a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8. For the 2022 model year, Dodge listed the standard Challenger SRT Hellcat at 717 horsepower. That combination of a large-displacement V8 and supercharging gave the car a clear identity in a period when performance cars were increasingly varied in layout and powertrain approach. It offered a choice of transmission
Dodge’s 2022 fact sheet lists a Tremec six-speed manual as standard on the SRT Hellcat and an eight-speed automatic as an option. This gives the Hellcat a meaningful configuration choice, but availability should be checked against the specific model year and trim rather than assumed across the entire Challenger range. Muscle-car drama with everyday-use features
Dodge did not position the Challenger solely as a drag-strip machine. Its 2023 model page describes class-exclusive five-passenger seating and an available 8.4-inch touchscreen. Those are manufacturer feature claims, not independent assessments of comfort, space, or usability, but they help explain the Hellcat’s broader appeal: it combined high-output performance with the basic format of a large, practical coupe. Why it represents the end of an era
Dodge said production of the HEMI-powered Challenger in its then-current form would end by December 31, 2023. The Demon 170 was presented as the final Last Call special edition, a distinct model rather than simply the ultimate Hellcat. In announcing it, Dodge brand chief executive Tim Kuniskis described the effort as a way “to celebrate the end of the HEMI muscle-car era” and reach a new performance benchmark. The case is persuasive if “ultimate” means a defining modern muscle car: a supercharged V8 at its core, multiple factory performance configurations, a manual-transmission option in the 2022 SRT Hellcat specification, and a place in the final years of the HEMI Challenger. It is not proof of universal superiority. The available sources do not establish cross-brand rankings, independent acceleration comparisons, reliability, owner satisfaction, or current used-market value. A fair Mustang or Camaro comparison would need matching model years and trims, plus comparable test conditions and ownership criteria.
