It was an advocacy request for a proposed redevelopment—not confirmation of government funding, approvals or construction. The City said improvements could strengthen facilities and safety, accommodate larger events and support tourism, jobs and community engagement.
What the City asked the State Government to support
The City’s 19 June 2024 statement urged the State to recognise Wanneroo Raceway’s place in Western Australia’s motorsport network and resource a comprehensive precinct upgrade. The City argued that substantial improvements were needed for the venue to contribute fully to the State’s motorsport ambitions. Its stated rationale was that better facilities could improve quality and safety and increase capacity for larger, more prestigious events, with expected benefits for local tourism, jobs and community engagement. The City said Wanneroo Raceway had hosted WA Supercars rounds since 1973. It reported that the 2023 event drew 30,000 fans across three days. That attendance figure is the City’s report in its 2024 release, not an independent economic-impact measure.
What the Wanneroo Raceway masterplan proposes
The City’s public description presents a broader motorsport and recreation precinct in the northern suburbs, including a drift track, 4WD training, mountain biking and family-friendly visitor attractions. The City’s 2020 consultation announcement also described draft options involving improvements or expansion to infrastructure, grandstands, paddock areas and pit buildings, as well as an entirely new FIA Grade 2 circuit. The published masterplan sets out further work rather than a ready-to-build schedule. Its recommendations include:
- Consult further with stakeholders and the State Government.
- Progress development in phases and clarify the intention for land north of the existing circuit.
- Undertake additional planning, environmental and water-management investigations.

A City corporate business plan historically listed finalising and implementing the masterplan, and advocating to State and Federal governments for support, as actions for 2021/22 to 2024/25. How the proposal became linked to the Burswood circuit debate
In June 2024, as the State was planning a motorsport destination at Burswood, the City described a Burswood destination and upgraded Wanneroo precinct as potentially complementary. It asked the State to resource Wanneroo so the initiatives could work in synergy. City of Wanneroo, 19 June 2024

By 5 March 2025, the City’s emphasis had shifted. It backed Victoria Park Mayor Karen Vernon’s opposition to a motorsport street circuit at Burswood Park and called instead for State support for the existing Wanneroo Raceway. The City cited protecting Burswood Park and using the established Neerabup venue for motorsport; it again pointed to possible recreation and family-oriented attractions at Wanneroo. ABC News reported the debate shortly before the 2025 Western Australian election and attributed a $230 million redevelopment-plan figure to Wanneroo Mayor Linda Aitken. That is a figure ABC attributed to the mayor; the reporting does not establish it as a current government budget or independently validated cost estimate. ABC News, 4 March 2025

Has the Wanneroo Raceway upgrade been funded or approved?
The available City and news sources establish that the City advocated for the upgrade and that a masterplan proposed further planning and investigations. They do not establish a current State Government approval, funding commitment or delivery timetable for the Wanneroo upgrade. The City’s request for support and the masterplan’s existence should not be read as confirmation that the project will proceed.
