Its meaning depends on the market and vehicle details. Honda Australia’s 2017 Civic Hatch brochure is a useful specific example: it covers FK4/FK5 models and lists five trims with two different engines. Those Australian specifications should not be assumed to describe every car labelled FK4.
What does FK4 mean on a Honda Civic?
FK4 identifies a Civic configuration in a particular market and model-year context. The code alone does not establish the car’s trim, engine or production year. The official sources cited here do not provide a universal decoding of FK4, so treat it as a starting point for identification rather than a complete specification.
Honda’s German owner-information page uses other FK labels for Civic five-door ranges: FK1/FK2/FK3 for earlier ranges and FK6/FK7 for a range from 2017 onward. That is Germany-specific evidence, not a universal code table or a decoding of FK4. Honda’s Japanese model archive documents Civic histories across different eras and body styles, but does not decode FK4. Honda Germany’s official-type listings and the Honda Japan Civic archive illustrate why market and year matter.
What did FK4/FK5 cover in Australia in 2017?
Honda Australia’s May 2017 brochure covers FK4/FK5 Civic Hatch models for the 2017 model year. It lists five trims—VTi, VTi-S, VTi-L, RS and VTi-LX—and divides them between two powertrains. These are historical Australian brochure specifications, not a guarantee about every FK4-labelled car.

| Australian 2017 trim(s) | Engine | Published output and torque | Transmission | Combined consumption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VTi, VTi-S | 1.8 L (1,799 cc) naturally aspirated SOHC i-VTEC inline-four | 104 kW at 6,500 rpm; 174 Nm at 4,300 rpm | CVT | 6.4 L/100 km |
| VTi-L, RS, VTi-LX | 1.5 L (1,498 cc) turbocharged DOHC VTEC inline-four | 127 kW at 5,500 rpm; 220 Nm at 1,700–5,500 rpm | CVT | 6.1 L/100 km |
All figures in the table are Honda Australia’s published 2017 brochure specifications for the named Australian Civic Hatch trims. The consumption figures are ADR81/02 test-cycle results, not real-world measurements; Honda notes that actual consumption can vary with driving and vehicle condition. Honda’s September 2017 explanation of its engine range separately gives the same 6.4 L/100 km figure for 1.8-litre hatch versions and 6.1 L/100 km for 1.5-litre turbo trims in Australia.
Trim equipment was not identical
The brochure also lists differences in safety equipment, infotainment, wheels, seating and boot capacity. For example, it lists Honda Sensing for the VTi-LX, not for the other four trims in its table. Do not infer that a named package or feature is fitted to every FK4/FK5 car.

Brochure figures are tied to their date and market
Honda Australia’s brochure says its specifications and major features apply to 2017 model-year Civic Hatch models and were accurate as of its May 2017 printing; it also warns that specifications may change without prior notice. Its listed dimensions are 4,515 mm long, 1,799 mm wide and 1,421 mm high, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase. These values describe the documented Australian lineup, not every Civic bearing an FK code.

- Check the registration documents and VIN to establish the exact vehicle identity.
- Confirm the original market and model year with Honda or regional documentation.
- Verify the engine and trim from the vehicle records or a qualified parts source; do not infer them from FK4 alone.
- For replacement parts or accessories, have fitment checked against the VIN, market, year and engine before ordering.
What FK4 does not prove
- It does not, by itself, identify one universal engine or trim.
- It does not establish that a car is a Type R.
- It does not make Australian 2017 specifications interchangeable with another market’s Civic specifications.
- It does not confirm that a particular part will fit.
