Bugatti says the cluster contains more than 650 components, including functional mechanical details and hand-finished elements. That makes the car unusually explicit in its use of watchmaking, but the available sources do not establish that it is the most watch-inspired vehicle ever made.
Why is the Bugatti Tourbillon named after a watch?
Bugatti says “tourbillon” refers to a watchmaking invention dating to 1801. The mechanism was designed to counteract gravity’s effects on timekeeping. Bugatti presents the name as a signal of mechanical complexity and lasting design, rather than as a claim that the car itself contains a traditional tourbillon mechanism. Bugatti’s 2026 explanation of the name and cluster describes the watchmaking connection.
At the car’s 2024 unveiling, Bugatti President Christophe Piochon said, “The name, Tourbillon, is inspired by the art of haute horlogerie – evoking the most sophisticated complexity you can see in a watch.” The name sets up a broader design idea: the cabin’s main instruments are intended to feel mechanical and enduring, not like a tablet fitted into a dashboard.
Is the Tourbillon dashboard really made by watchmakers?
Yes. Bugatti says the instrument cluster was hand-assembled at Concepto, a Swiss manufacture specializing in haute horlogerie. The company reports that the cluster contains more than 650 components and uses traditional watchmaking methods. Concepto watchmaker David Olafsson called it “an amazing project.”

Bugatti identifies working mechanical elements, ruby bearing jewels intended to reduce friction, sapphire crystal, skeletonized structures, and hand-finished needles. The gears were specially designed for the car. These are not merely decorative references to a watch face: the cluster is a constructed mechanical assembly. The component count and materials are Bugatti’s published descriptions, not independently verified measurements.
What makes the instrument cluster watch-inspired?
Mechanical construction and finishing
The cluster’s visible mechanical structure, jewels, crystal, and finished needles draw on watchmaking materials and techniques. Bugatti Interior Designer and Individualization Expert Alexandra Tavares described the goal this way: “The idea behind this car is to have the very best in its field for every component.” The cluster puts that ambition in the driver’s direct view.

Custom finishes
Bugatti says customers can choose decorative treatments such as Clous de Paris, radial guilloché, tapestry, engine-turned patterns, and options including aventurine. These are configuration choices, not finishes stated to be standard on every Tourbillon.
A fixed-hub steering wheel
The steering wheel has a fixed center: the rim turns around the hub, so the driver’s view of the instrument cluster remains unobstructed as the wheel rotates. That arrangement gives the analog instruments a stable position in the cabin rather than making them a display that shifts with the steering wheel.

Does the Bugatti Tourbillon have screens?
It is not an entirely screen-free cabin. Bugatti’s 2024 launch feature describes an analog instrument cluster alongside a discreet infotainment display. The company’s stated aim was to avoid making the cabin dependent on large screens. Piochon called that approach a “digital detox” and argued that screens can age a car’s interior. That is Bugatti’s design rationale; it does not independently prove that analog interfaces last longer or that screens inevitably age poorly.
How does the V16 fit the watchmaking idea?
The watch-inspired cabin sits alongside a powertrain designed around mechanical spectacle. In a June 21, 2024 release, Cosworth said it designed and manufactured the Tourbillon’s naturally aspirated 8.35-litre V16 with Bugatti, and described the engine as capable of 9,000 rpm. Those are Cosworth’s published specifications, not figures from an independent test. Cosworth Managing Director of Powertrain Bruce Wood said, “Producing a V16, especially one as large as this 8.35 litre, is no easy feat.”

The engine is relevant as context for the car’s emphasis on visible, physical engineering, but it is distinct from the watchmaking work on the instrument cluster. The cluster’s more than 650 components are Bugatti’s figure; the engine displacement and rev capability come from Cosworth’s June 2024 release.

Bugatti’s August 2025 description gives the watch a 30-second flying tourbillon, a central hour-and-minute display modeled on the car’s RPM and speed counters, and an 80-hour movement power reserve. Its sapphire-crystal engine-block automaton uses 16 titanium pistons driven by a 22.37 mm crankshaft. Bugatti also describes a Tourbillon Baguette edition with 17 carats of baguette-cut diamonds and a limited run of 18 pieces. All of these figures refer to the wristwatch, not the car.
Is the Tourbillon the most watch-inspired car ever made?
The evidence supports calling the Tourbillon strongly and unusually watch-inspired: its name invokes a specific horological invention, specialist watchmakers assembled its analog cluster, and Bugatti describes watchmaking materials, mechanisms, and customizable finishing in that assembly. The sources do not compare it with other vehicles or establish a ranking, so “most watch-inspired” is best treated as an editorial superlative rather than a verified record.
