The 2026 Honda Prelude doesn’t have a conventional manual because Honda describes its hybrid powertrain as having no traditional transmission or CVT. Its traction motor drives the wheels through a fixed ratio, while the gasoline engine’s power is blended through a lock-up clutch. Honda’s S+ Shift feature adds simulated stepped shifts, but it does not provide a clutch pedal or a manual gearbox.
How the Prelude’s hybrid drivetrain works
American Honda says the Prelude uses its two-motor hybrid system and is “not equipped with a traditional transmission or CVT.” Instead of a conventional gearbox with selectable ratios, the traction motor sends drive force to the wheels through a fixed ratio. When the gasoline engine is operating, its power is blended through a lock-up clutch.
Honda says that under most circumstances the engine-driven generator produces electricity for the drive motor and battery. The result is a system that manages propulsion and engine operation without the driver selecting gears through a conventional manual transmission.
What S+ Shift does—and what it doesn’t
Honda’s S+ Shift is designed to give the hybrid a more familiar stepped-shift sensation. Honda Motor Co.’s global description calls it a “virtual 8-speed transmission”; the feature controls engine RPM during acceleration and deceleration to create a shift-like response. In the U.S., Honda describes S+ Shift as simulating a traditional dual-clutch automatic transmission, with steering-wheel paddles used to control the experience.

Those simulated shifts do not mean the Prelude has eight physical gears, a clutch pedal, or a driver-operated manual gearbox. S+ Shift changes the sensation and control of acceleration; it does not change the underlying transmission architecture.
Has Honda explained why it didn’t offer a manual Prelude?
Honda’s official materials explain how the hybrid drivetrain works and why its shift experience is simulated. They do not give a separate, Prelude-specific statement that the company rejected a manual because of customer demand, cost, packaging, sales forecasts, or another product-planning reason. The drivetrain description provides the mechanical context, but it should not be confused with a quoted corporate rationale for the lineup decision.

Road & Track has reported an executive comment about the role of hybrid assist in making manuals possible on the earlier Insight and CR-Z. That comment concerns those models, not the Prelude, and does not establish Honda’s stated reason for the new coupe’s transmission offering.

The U.S.-market 2026 Prelude is a hybrid coupe with Honda’s two-motor system and simulated shift behavior, rather than a choice between manual and automatic versions. Drivers seeking a clutch pedal and direct control of physical gear changes will not get that experience from S+ Shift; drivers interested in a hybrid with shift-like responses may find the feature relevant. The simulation is an engagement feature, not a manual-transmission substitute in mechanical terms.
