Tesla also eliminated roughly 500 roles in its charging group in late April 2024. The episode raised questions about network expansion, maintenance and automaker partnerships, but it did not mean the Supercharger network shut down.
Why was Tesla Supercharger chief Rebecca Tinucci fired?
Reuters reported on May 15, 2024, that Tinucci was dismissed after resisting Musk’s request for further reductions in the charging organization. According to Reuters, she had already cut the group’s staff by 15% to 20% about two weeks earlier, as part of broader company layoffs. Sources told Reuters that Musk wanted additional cuts and that Tinucci argued they would damage the charging business. She and the roughly 500-person group were then let go. Reuters’ account was based on interviews with four former charging-network employees who relayed what they had heard from Supercharger managers about a private meeting; it was not a firsthand public account of the exchange. Reuters said Musk and Tinucci did not respond to requests for comment.
That distinction matters: the reported disagreement is the explanation for the dismissal in Reuters’ sourcing, not a motive Tesla or either person publicly confirmed.
What happened to Tesla’s charging team?
Associated Press reported that charging-team leaders said they were told on April 29, 2024, that the group—about 500 employees—had been eliminated. The timing followed the earlier staff reduction described by Reuters. Together, the reports describe a staged sequence: an initial cut, then the dismissal of the remaining charging organization.

Reuters also reported that Tesla’s energy team was assigned to take over aspects of Supercharger work. The company told contractors to pause materials purchases and hold off breaking ground on newly awarded construction projects, according to Reuters and a letter from a Tesla global-supply manager. Contractors and utilities had already spent money on equipment and infrastructure for Tesla projects. These reports indicate disruption and a pause on some new work, not that every Supercharger site or project stopped operating.
Why did the layoffs raise concerns beyond Tesla?
Keeping the network running
Charging stations require more than construction: existing sites need upkeep, and the network depends on software and operations. AP quoted industry analyst Sam Abuelsamid saying staff are needed to keep hardware operating and software integration working. That was an analyst’s assessment of the risks, not proof that uptime or service had already deteriorated.

Integrating other automakers’ vehicles
AP said the layoffs created uncertainty about Tesla’s support for integrating other manufacturers’ electric vehicles with the Supercharger network. Automakers were responding to a sudden change, but their contemporaneous comments do not establish what happened to integration plans later.
Building new sites
The pause instructions to contractors mattered because projects depend on coordinated spending and construction activity. Reuters reported the instructions applied to newly awarded projects and materials purchases; the reporting does not show that all existing construction or every planned site was canceled.

What did Musk and automakers say publicly?
On April 30, 2024, Musk wrote on X that Tesla still planned to add to the network, “just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations,” as AP reported. That public statement described a shift in emphasis, not a promise to maintain the previous pace of new-site construction.
Automakers’ comments reflected immediate uncertainty:

The U.S. figures count fast-charging stations and plugs; the global figures count Supercharger stations and connectors. They are not directly interchangeable, and none is a current network total.
What happened after the layoffs?
In June 2025, The Atlantic reported that many Supercharger employees had been rehired, that Tinucci had left Tesla, and that she was overseeing Uber’s shift to electric vehicles at that time. That is a dated account; it does not establish Tinucci’s role, Tesla’s staffing levels or the company’s network strategy as of October 2026.
The federal charging-funding context was also part of the 2024 story. Reuters described a $5 billion funding pool for new chargers and said Tesla had been its biggest winner so far. That figure refers to the program context cited in Reuters’ 2024 report, not a current balance or an amount awarded solely to Tesla.
