That was 420 below the 463,310 estimate attributed to FactSet StreetAccount in a contemporaneous report, and Tesla shares fell during morning trading after the figures were released. But a separate Associated Press report cited a 462,000 FactSet estimate, against which Tesla was slightly ahead. The apparent disagreement comes from different estimate sources—not one universal analyst forecast.
What Tesla reported for Q3 2024
Tesla reported 462,890 deliveries and 469,796 vehicles produced for the quarter. Deliveries count vehicles handed over to customers; production counts vehicles made. The two figures are not interchangeable.
The delivery total was up from 435,059 in Q3 2023, according to the Associated Press. That year-over-year increase did not prevent the report from falling short of one widely cited estimate.
Why reports differed on whether Tesla missed estimates
Analyst-consensus figures vary by provider and methodology. The CNBC-syndicated report published by Business Insider cited a FactSet StreetAccount estimate of 463,310 deliveries, making Tesla’s reported total 420 vehicles short. The Associated Press cited a separate FactSet estimate of 462,000, which put Tesla 890 vehicles above that benchmark. These are distinct estimates and should not be combined as if they were the same consensus.

Why the stock fell after the release
The Associated Press reported that Tesla shares fell nearly 4% in morning trading; the CNBC-syndicated report described a decline of as much as 3.7%. Those descriptions reflect different reporting and measurement points, so they are best treated as accounts of the same morning reaction rather than as one precise closing-day return.

The AP said investors had hoped for a stronger result and reported that low-interest financing, lease deals, price cuts and free charging helped support global deliveries. It also said nearly all Tesla sales came from Models 3 and Y. These are reported market context, not proof that any single factor caused the share-price move.
AP quoted Wedbush analyst Dan Ives describing the deliveries as “good and a step in the right direction,” while noting pressure because investors had expected more. Ives also called reaching roughly 1.8 million deliveries for the year an important benchmark. That was his contemporaneous assessment, not a guarantee of Tesla’s eventual annual result.

What delivery numbers can—and cannot—tell you
A delivery count is a useful measure of vehicle volume, but it is not a complete quarterly financial result. Tesla has cautioned that deliveries and energy-storage deployments are only two measures of performance and should not be relied on as indicators of quarterly financial results. Revenue, margins, net income and cash flow require the company’s broader financial reporting; they cannot be inferred from delivery totals alone.

The title refers to the Q3 2024 report, not Tesla’s latest quarter in the available figures. Tesla’s October 2, 2026 release reported 486,532 deliveries and 464,391 vehicles produced for Q3 2026. Its September 29, 2026 consensus release listed 461,974 average deliveries and a 463,406 median across 24 estimates. The reported 2026 total exceeded both consensus measures.

Those later figures provide a clear historical contrast, but not a like-for-like stock-performance comparison. Axios reported Q3 2026 deliveries up 1.3% from Q2 and down 2.1% year over year, and said Tesla and Rivian shares rose in early trading Friday. Stock reactions depend on the reporting window and market expectations at the time.
