Tesla’s August 18, 2023 breach notice says two former employees misappropriated company information and shared it with German newspaper Handelsblatt. The notice identifies names and some contact details in records for certain current and former employees, but it does not state how many people were affected. The “over 75,000” figure appeared in breach-notification coverage; it is not confirmed by the primary notice reviewed here.
What Tesla said happened
Tesla’s notice says Handelsblatt informed the company on May 10, 2023, that it had obtained confidential Tesla information. Tesla said its investigation found that two former employees had misappropriated information in violation of the company’s IT-security and data-protection policies and shared it with the outlet. Tesla also said Handelsblatt told it that the outlet did not intend to publish personal information and was legally prohibited from using it inappropriately. This is Tesla’s account of what the newspaper said, rather than an independent finding about what happened to the information.
What employee information was involved
The notice describes records for certain current and former employees, including names and certain contact details: addresses, phone numbers and/or email addresses. Its wording does not establish that every listed field was involved for every person.

The headline figure of more than 75,000 is a reported count, not a total stated in Tesla’s notice. The notice’s California sample form contains placeholders rather than a verified population count. The materials available here therefore do not establish the exact number of affected employees from a primary notice.
What the regulator raised—and what it did not establish
Separately, a May 15, 2023 response from Brandenburg’s data-protection authority, reproduced by Handelsblatt, said it had serious indications of possible data-protection violations. The authority was concerned that sensitive employee data might have been broadly accessible inside Tesla because access rights were not sufficiently restricted. It said the matter would be especially serious if confirmed, given the potentially large number of people, and that employees at German and other European sites could be affected. Those access-control concerns are distinct from Tesla’s account of two former employees sharing information with the newspaper. The authority’s letter described cross-border supervisory coordination, including notification of the Dutch authority and coordination with Berlin’s authority. It explained the role of the lead authority for Tesla’s European main establishment in cross-border processing cases. The materials cited here do not establish the review’s ultimate findings or outcome.
How Tesla said it responded
According to its notice, Tesla took steps to contain the incident, determine its scope and protect information. The company said it filed lawsuits against the two former employees, obtained seizure of devices believed to contain Tesla information, and secured court orders barring further use, access or dissemination under threat of criminal penalties. It also said it cooperated with law enforcement and external forensic experts. These are actions Tesla reported; the notice does not establish final litigation outcomes.
