Tesla delivered 336,681 vehicles worldwide in the first quarter of 2025, down about 13% from 386,810 in the same quarter a year earlier. Production disruption during the Model Y changeover, stronger competition, concerns about Tesla’s lineup and backlash linked to CEO Elon Musk’s political activity were all cited as factors. The available figures do not establish how much each contributed.
How much did Tesla sales fall?
Tesla reported 336,681 global vehicle deliveries in Q1 2025, compared with 386,810 in Q1 2024—a year-over-year decline of about 13%, according to its April 2, 2025 delivery announcement. The figures cover worldwide quarterly deliveries, not registrations in a single market.
Tesla cautioned that deliveries are only one measure of performance and should not be relied on by themselves as an indicator of quarterly financial results. Selling prices, costs, currency movements and other factors also affect financial performance.
What happened in Europe?
Europe showed a particularly sharp downturn in the first two months of the year. Tesla registrations there fell 49% in January and February 2025, while the overall European battery-electric vehicle market grew 28.4%, figures from ACEA reported by the Associated Press indicate. This is a two-month regional comparison, not a full-year result or evidence that Tesla sales declined in every market.

The contrast suggests Tesla was losing ground in that period even as the broader European BEV market expanded. Registrations are a different metric from Tesla’s global delivery count, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
What factors were reported?
Model Y production changeover
Tesla disclosed in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 31, 2025 that changing over Model Y production lines at all four factories caused several weeks of lost production in Q1. That is a company-disclosed supply disruption. The filing does not say how many deliveries were delayed, how many potential buyers were affected, or how many vehicles shifted into a later quarter.

Competition and lineup timing
Contemporaneous Associated Press coverage described rising competition, including from Chinese EV makers such as BYD, and an aging lineup as part of the context for the decline. It also raised the possibility that some buyers waited for the refreshed Model Y. Those are reported explanations, not measured counts of customers who switched brands or delayed a purchase.
Backlash linked to Musk’s political activity
The same coverage reported consumer backlash and protests associated with Musk’s political activity as another factor in the slump. That makes controversy relevant context, but does not prove it caused the global decline on its own or establish its relative impact alongside production and competition.

What the numbers do—and do not—show
- Established: Global deliveries were down about 13% year over year in Q1 2025, and Tesla disclosed several weeks of lost Model Y production during a factory changeover.
- Established for a narrower window: Tesla registrations in Europe fell 49% in January and February while the region’s BEV market grew 28.4%.
- Reported, not apportioned: Competition, lineup age, potential buyer delays and backlash linked to Musk’s political activity were cited as possible contributors.
- Not established: The evidence does not assign a precise share of the decline to any one factor or prove that the European pattern applied everywhere.
The clearest reading is that Tesla faced a real quarterly delivery decline amid both an operational production transition and reported demand-side pressures. The available evidence supports treating those factors as concurrent, rather than declaring one the sole cause.
