Tesla reported 386,810 vehicle deliveries worldwide in the first quarter of 2024, about 8.5% fewer than the 423,000 it reported for the same quarter a year earlier. The company attributed part of the decline to an updated Model 3 production ramp at Fremont, shipping diversions linked to conflict in the Red Sea, and a March power outage at its German factory. Tesla did not quantify how much each factor affected deliveries, so the Houthi attacks and suspected arson are contributing factors in the company’s explanation—not a proven account of the entire drop.
How much did Tesla deliveries fall?
Tesla delivered 386,810 vehicles worldwide in Q1 2024, down from 423,000 in Q1 2023. That is an approximately 8.5% year-over-year decline; the Associated Press described it as almost 9%. AP reported the delivery comparison, while The National reported the quarterly figures.
Deliveries and production are different measures. Tesla produced 433,371 vehicles in the quarter—46,561 more than it delivered. The production figure shows that output exceeded deliveries, but by itself it does not establish why the delivery total fell or how many vehicles were awaiting delivery at quarter’s end.
What factors did Tesla cite?
Tesla identified three operational factors: the updated Model 3 production ramp at its Fremont factory, Red Sea-related shipping diversions, and the March outage at Gigafactory Berlin. The reports describe these as contributors; they do not assign a numerical share of the delivery decline to any one of them.

Updated Model 3 production ramp at Fremont
Tesla cited the production ramp for the updated Model 3 at its Fremont, California, factory. A model update can affect factory output as production shifts to the revised vehicle, but the reported Q1 figures do not quantify the Fremont ramp’s effect on total deliveries.
Red Sea diversions and delayed components
Ships traveling between Asia and Europe were rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope amid conflict in the Red Sea, increasing transit times and disrupting the flow of components to Tesla’s Grünheide factory near Berlin. In January, Tesla said the longer routes were affecting production and creating a supply-chain gap. Reuters reported that Tesla planned to suspend most production at the site from January 29 through February 11 because of the component shortage. Reuters reported the planned pause and Tesla’s explanation.

The January pause is evidence of a specific production disruption before the March outage. It is not a separate estimate of how many Q1 deliveries were lost because of shipping delays.
March power outage at Grünheide
On March 5, a fire at an electricity pylon near the factory cut power and halted production at the German plant. The fire did not spread to the factory itself. Police investigated suspected arson, and Reuters reported that Germany’s federal prosecutor took over the investigation on March 8. The prosecutor described the initial suspicion as conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism, anti-constitutional sabotage, and conspiracy to commit arson; that was an investigative suspicion, not a finding of guilt. Reuters reported the outage and initial investigation and later reported the prosecutor’s involvement.

Did the Houthi attacks and arson cause the whole sales drop?
The reporting supports a narrower conclusion: Tesla said the production ramp, Red Sea-related shipping delays, and Berlin outage contributed to the decline. It does not establish that the Houthi attacks or the suspected arson alone caused the 8.5% fall, nor does it provide a causal breakdown for the three disruptions.
Other market conditions also mattered as context. AP noted intensifying competition, slower growth in electric-vehicle sales, and price cuts that had not brought in more buyers. Those broader factors help explain the difficult sales environment, but the available reports do not calculate their individual effects on Tesla’s quarterly deliveries.
