Tesla’s acceleration and regenerative braking can shape those movement cues, but there is no established evidence that Teslas uniquely cause motion sickness or that a particular Tesla setting treats it.
Why do I get carsick in a Tesla?
Your eyes, inner ear, and body send the brain information about movement. When those signals conflict—for example, when your inner ear registers acceleration or a turn while you look at a nearby, apparently stable surface—the mismatch can trigger motion sickness. The CDC calls sensory conflict or neural mismatch the most widely accepted explanation. Limited views outside can make it harder to reconcile what you see with what you feel.
As neurologist Victor S. Wang, MD, told the American Medical Association, “When any one of those different systems is out of sync, you start to notice motion sickness problems.” Harvard-affiliated neurologist Richard Lewis, MD, describes a related mismatch between the brain’s prediction of how the body will move and what actually happens. This is a general motion-sickness mechanism, not a Tesla-specific diagnosis.
Symptoms can include nausea, dizziness, vertigo, vomiting, sweating, pallor, excess salivation, and fatigue. People differ in susceptibility. The CDC notes that migraine, vertigo, vestibular disorders, pregnancy, and hormonal factors can affect risk; it also cites twin-study evidence suggesting genetic factors account for 55–70% of variation in susceptibility. Motion sickness alone does not establish that someone has an underlying disorder.

Can regenerative braking or acceleration make passengers nauseous?
They can plausibly contribute for some passengers by changing the motion cues the body feels. Tesla’s Model Y owner manual says regenerative braking slows the car when the accelerator is released. Acceleration, braking, and turns can all make movement more noticeable to a passenger whose eyes are focused inside the cabin. That makes smooth, gradual inputs a reasonable practical trial, not a clinically proven treatment.
Controls and behavior vary by vehicle. Tesla manuals describe Chill mode, where available, as limiting acceleration for a smoother, gentler ride. The 2025-and-newer Model Y manual describes a Reduced deceleration mode for applicable configurations. By contrast, the 2020–2024 Model Y manual says regenerative-braking settings are unavailable for vehicles manufactured from approximately January 2024. Availability and menu wording depend on model, market, software, and configuration; check the manual for your vehicle and its display rather than relying on a universal menu path.

Does Chill mode help with motion sickness?
Chill mode may make acceleration gentler on configurations that offer it, which could reduce abrupt movement for a passenger. But Tesla’s manual describes a vehicle response setting, not a motion-sickness treatment, and the reviewed medical guidance does not establish Chill mode as one. It is reasonable to try if available, alongside smoother driving, while recognizing that passengers may still feel sick.
How can I stop feeling sick in a Tesla?
Start with low-risk changes that reduce visual mismatch or make movement easier to anticipate. The CDC notes these countermeasures may help only partially, and results vary.

- Look outside. Face forward and look through the windshield toward the horizon or a distant, stable reference rather than at a phone, screen, or nearby cabin surface.
- Stop reading and limit visual scanning. Reading and shifting attention among close objects can make it harder to match visual information with movement.
- Keep head movement modest if comfortable. Avoid unnecessary movement, especially during turns, without forcing a posture that feels uncomfortable.
- Choose a seat with a clear view and less motion. A forward-facing seat with a view through the windshield may help; MedlinePlus advises looking into the distance and choosing a seat where motion is less pronounced.
- Ask the driver for smooth inputs. Gradual acceleration and deceleration are a sensible trial based on how motion cues contribute to symptoms, not a guaranteed fix.
Behavioral measures are generally worth trying before medication. CDC guidance emphasizes countermeasures and notes that their effectiveness is limited apart from habituation.
Should I take medicine for a Tesla ride?
Medication is a separate option, not a vehicle-specific solution. The CDC lists dimenhydrinate, including Dramamine Original, among common adult anti-motion-sickness medicines. Effective medicines can cause drowsiness and may have contraindications; whether one is appropriate depends on factors such as age, health conditions, and other medicines. Ask a qualified clinician or pharmacist about individual suitability, and follow the product label. Do not assume a medicine is safe for a particular passenger or situation.

What if a passenger gets sick in my Tesla?
If it is safe to do so, the driver can reduce abrupt acceleration and braking, while the passenger looks forward through the windshield toward a distant point and puts away reading material or a phone. A seat with a clearer view outside may be preferable when practical. Do not let the driver become distracted trying to adjust settings while moving; vehicle controls should be handled only when it is safe.
If symptoms are severe, persist beyond travel, occur when the person is not traveling, or interfere with daily life, discuss them with a qualified clinician. Motion sickness can have several contributing factors, and the symptoms alone do not identify a cause.

Do motion-sickness glasses or acupressure bands work?
They are not established solutions. The CDC says acupressure bands are no better than placebo in its reviewed guidance. Harvard Health reports mixed evidence for bands and describes a 2026 virtual-reality experiment in which neither real nor sham motion-sickness glasses alleviated symptoms. These findings do not make the products reliable substitutes for strategies that address sightlines and movement cues.
