SUVs made up 60% of new vehicles produced for the U.S. market for model year 2024, according to the EPA. Their popularity is best explained by a mix of practical utility, a driving position some buyers perceive as safer, and automakers’ shift toward producing more SUVs—not by one proven motive shared by every buyer.
That 60% is a share of production delivered for sale in the United States, not a count of calendar-year retail sales. The EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report, published in February 2026, treats model-year 2024 as final data; its model-year 2025 figures are preliminary projections based on automaker submissions.
What does SUV popularity look like in the U.S.?
The rise of SUVs is part of a long-running change in what automakers produce. In the EPA’s production data, sedans and wagons accounted for more than 80% of new vehicles in 1975, but less than 25% in model year 2024. SUVs represented 60% of production in 2024, and truck SUVs alone came close to half of all new vehicles produced.
These figures show the scale of the market shift, not why each person chose an SUV. The EPA separates SUVs into car SUVs and truck SUVs, and the distinction is not simply a measure of size: classification depends on attributes of the specific vehicle, including weight, drive system, and design. Category-wide figures therefore do not predict the characteristics of every SUV.

Why do Americans choose SUVs?
There is no current, named consumer survey in the available evidence that ranks Americans’ reasons for choosing SUVs or assigns them percentages. A 2000-era U.S. Department of Transportation report offered utility, perceived safety, and the country’s general economic wellbeing as possible explanations. These are historical interpretations, not a current poll or a single proven cause.
Utility for everyday life
Utility is a broad appeal: people may value a vehicle’s seating and cargo space or its fit for general mobility. The federal report described SUVs as being used primarily for general mobility rather than off-road activity. That challenges the idea that off-roading alone explains the category’s popularity, but it does not establish which features matter most to today’s buyers.

A sense of safety
The report also identified perceived safety as a possible draw. That is a statement about buyer perception, not proof that every SUV is safer than every car. The same historical report discussed rollover propensity and risks SUVs could pose to occupants of other vehicles in some types of crashes. Safety depends on the particular vehicles and the kind of crash; a broad category label cannot settle a model-to-model comparison.
Use beyond commuting
A Bureau of Transportation Statistics paper analyzing the 1995 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey found SUVs relatively popular for weekend travel. In that historical dataset, SUVs also had higher occupancy and annual mileage than passenger cars. The paper found no indication that SUVs or minivans served additional work purposes. Because the underlying survey is from 1995, it describes past travel patterns and should not be treated as a picture of current buyers.

Did automakers make SUVs popular by producing more of them?
Automakers’ product mix has moved in the same direction as the market: SUV production has grown as sedan and wagon production has contracted. That shift affects what vehicles are available to shoppers, but the production figures alone cannot show whether manufacturers were responding to consumer preferences, helping shape them, or doing both. The evidence establishes the change in production, not the size or direction of that causal effect.
Are SUVs actually safer than cars?
“SUV” covers vehicles with different designs and regulatory classifications, so it is too broad to make a universal safety claim. Perceived safety is one historical explanation for demand; it should not be confused with measured protection in a particular crash or with safety for people outside the vehicle. The cited federal safety discussion is historical rather than a current, model-by-model comparison.

For a real comparison, look at current crash-test results for the exact models and configurations under consideration. Consider occupant protection alongside risks to other road users; do not use the SUV label or a higher driving position as a substitute for model-specific evidence.

Do SUVs use more gas than cars?
In model year 2024, truck SUVs averaged 25.7 mpg in the EPA’s estimated-real-world fuel-economy measure, compared with 27.2 mpg for all new vehicles. These are category averages, not a direct comparison of every SUV with every car. SUV subtypes and powertrains vary, so the EPA figures do not establish the fuel economy of a particular model.

- Space and use: Check the seating and cargo capacity you need for regular trips and occasional weekend use.
- Fuel economy: Compare the EPA estimate for each exact model and powertrain, rather than treating the truck-SUV average as a prediction.
- Safety: Review current results for the specific models and weigh occupant protection as well as risks to other road users.
- Classification: Remember that “car SUV” and “truck SUV” are EPA reporting categories based on vehicle attributes, not simple synonyms for small and large.
The SUV category’s popularity reflects a broad appeal and a changed production mix. Neither makes every SUV the right fit, or guarantees that a particular one is roomier, safer, or more capable than a particular car.
