Stellantis ended development of hydrogen fuel-cell technology for its planned light commercial vehicles on July 16, 2025, cancelling the hydrogen-powered Pro One van launch scheduled for that year. The company cited limited refueling infrastructure, high capital requirements and the need for stronger purchase incentives. The decision also put pressure on Symbio, the fuel-cell supplier partly owned by Stellantis, though Symbio later reported renewed support from its other shareholders, Forvia and Michelin.
What Stellantis cancelled
Stellantis said it would discontinue its hydrogen fuel-cell program for light commercial vehicles and would not launch the planned hydrogen Pro One range in 2025. Series production had been scheduled at Hordain, France, for medium-sized vans and at Gliwice, Poland, for large vans; the company said production at both sites would end. The announcement concerned this product and technology program, not every hydrogen vehicle or application. Stellantis also said employees at its production sites would not be affected and that hydrogen-related research and development would be redirected to other projects. That assurance applied to Stellantis production-site employees; it should not be read as a guarantee about jobs at Symbio.

Why did Stellantis abandon hydrogen fuel cells?
Stellantis’ stated case was that the conditions for selling hydrogen vans at scale were not in place: refueling infrastructure was limited, investment requirements were high, and stronger consumer incentives were needed. It said it did not expect hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicles to be adopted before the end of the decade.
#1 Best Overall
- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
Jean-Philippe Imparato, Stellantis’ Chief Operating Officer for Enlarged Europe, described the market this way: “The hydrogen market remains a niche segment, with no prospects of mid-term economic sustainability.” That is the automaker’s explanation for its strategy decision, not an independently established forecast. The cited company materials do not provide a neutral market forecast or a like-for-like comparison of hydrogen and battery-electric vans on lifecycle cost or emissions.
What did the decision mean for Symbio?
Forvia and Michelin, Symbio’s co-shareholders alongside Stellantis, said Stellantis orders represented approximately 80% of Symbio’s planned production volume. They said the supplier had scaled investment, hiring and its development roadmap around Stellantis’ requirements. The figure is their estimate of planned production volume, not a share of Symbio’s historical sales or revenue. Forvia and Michelin’s statement

Symbio’s response in 2025
In a July 28, 2025 statement, Symbio called the withdrawal a major setback, warned of potential employment consequences and said it was considering financial and industrial scenarios to preserve jobs and the company’s viability. It also described possible diversification into other mobility and stationary applications. Those were scenarios under consideration at the time, not confirmed results. CEO Jean-Baptiste Lucas said: “Everyone must be committed to playing their part, honoring their commitments, and taking responsibility.” This was Symbio’s position following the decision. Symbio’s reported plan in 2026
On May 18, 2026, Symbio said it had renewed support from Forvia and Michelin and a new business plan. The company described continued industrialization of a 75-kW fuel cell for mobility and stationary applications, development of a 150-kW system and support for early adopters. These are Symbio-reported plans and product directions; the announcement does not establish how widely the systems have been deployed. Lucas called the renewed backing “a new beginning for Symbio, with a roadmap that is both ambitious and realistic.” Symbio’s May 18, 2026 update

What Stellantis later reported financially
In its FY2025 financial results released in 2026, Stellantis recorded a €1.094 billion adjustment associated with discontinuing the hydrogen fuel-cell program. The company’s explanatory note itemized the adjustment as follows: Stellantis FY2025 financial results
| Item reported by Stellantis | Amount |
|---|---|
| Impairment of investment in Symbio | €324 million |
| Impairment of loans to Symbio | €146 million |
| Capitalized fuel-cell development expenditure and property and equipment | €341 million |
| Risk provisions | €210 million |
| Other expenses | €73 million |
| Total adjustment | €1.094 billion |
These are accounting items in Stellantis’ disclosure, not a measure of the total economic effect on Symbio or the wider hydrogen industry.

- 1.This hydrogen fuel cell car model adopts hydrogen-oxygen power generation principle, creating clean energy driving effect to intuitively demonstrate new energy and fuel cell working mechanism.
- 2.It produces hydrogen through the reaction of zinc particles and citric acid, converting chemical energy into electric power to drive the car, helping learners understand energy conversion knowledge visually.
- 3.Designed with complete experimental accessories including hydrogen cylinder, fuel celland spare plug for convenient assembly and smooth science experiment operation.
- 4.Requires 80℃ hot water for stable chemical reaction to ensure sufficient hydrogen output; simple vent exhaust operation helps maintain pure gas for normal power generation performance.
- 5.Ideal STEM teaching instrument for classroom education, home science projects and tech learning.
Does this mean hydrogen mobility is over?
No. Stellantis ended its planned hydrogen light-commercial-vehicle program; that does not establish the end of hydrogen mobility generally. Symbio’s 2026 update points to its own planned work in mobility and stationary power, but it is a company statement about its direction, not proof of broad market adoption. The cited announcements also do not settle the wider technical or climate comparison between hydrogen and battery-electric vehicles.
