Elon Musk’s “we dug our own grave” remark was a warning about the difficulty of mass-producing the Cybertruck, not a standalone admission that the truck had failed commercially. The Associated Press reported that Musk made the comment on Tesla’s third-quarter earnings call in October 2023, using the wording “we dug our own grave with Cybertruck.” Tesla’s later financial filing offers some business context: the company said Cybertruck costs and its production ramp weighed on automotive costs and gross margin in 2024.
What Musk said—and what the quote means
In an April 2024 report, the Associated Press said Musk made the remark during Tesla’s third-quarter conference call in October 2023, while discussing the challenge of mass-producing the Cybertruck. AP’s reported wording is “we dug our own grave with Cybertruck”; the title’s “the Cybertruck” is a slight variation.

The original call transcript is not available here to verify the complete exchange independently. The quote should therefore be understood as AP’s account of Musk’s remarks, rather than a transcript-checked quotation. In context, it describes a manufacturing challenge. By itself, it does not establish weak customer demand, commercial failure, or a particular production or delivery outcome.

Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K, filed with the SEC in 2025, provides a later financial measure of the challenge. Tesla said higher Cybertruck costs partially offset decreases in automotive cost of sales. The company also attributed part of the lower total automotive gross margin in 2024, compared with 2023, to the Cybertruck ramp.

Those disclosures support the idea that bringing the truck into production carried costs that affected Tesla’s broader automotive results. They are not a separate accounting of the Cybertruck’s overall profitability, and they do not show how many trucks Tesla produced or delivered. The filing’s statements should not be stretched into a claim that the model itself lost a particular amount of money.
Production challenges and safety recalls are separate issues
A difficult production ramp and a vehicle recall are different kinds of evidence. Musk’s 2023 comment concerned mass production. The recalls below concern specific safety or equipment issues affecting defined groups of vehicles; they do not quantify production or explain the financial effect of the ramp.
Rank #2
| Issue | Vehicles or production period described | Remedy or owner action |
|---|---|---|
| Cantrail adhesive joint | Certain 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks manufactured November 13, 2023 through February 27, 2025. Tesla says delamination could allow a stainless-steel panel to separate and create a road hazard. | Tesla says it will replace the assembly at no charge. Check the VIN using Tesla’s current recall information; Tesla says affected vehicles may be driven while awaiting service. |
| Drive inverter | Certain model-year 2024 Cybertrucks produced November 6, 2023 through July 30, 2024. Tesla says a fault may cause loss of propulsion. | Tesla says affected vehicles will receive a no-charge inverter replacement. Check the VIN and follow current service instructions. |
| Backup-camera feed | Certain 2024 Cybertrucks with the identified camera issue. | Tesla says software version 2024.32.5.2 or later corrected the condition through an over-the-air update. This is a historical version reference; owners should check their VIN and installed software. |
| Accelerator pedal | AP reported that NHTSA’s recall population was 3,878 model-year 2024 Cybertrucks, involving vehicles made November 13, 2023 through April 4, 2024. | The cited AP report identifies the recall population and issue; check the vehicle’s VIN with Tesla or NHTSA for applicable instructions. |
The 3,878 figure is the population for the accelerator-pedal recall reported by AP in April 2024. It is not the Cybertruck’s production total or a count of all Cybertruck recalls. Recall eligibility depends on the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the specific production range, not simply the model year.

- Find the vehicle identification number (VIN), which is the identifier used to determine whether a specific vehicle is included.
- Check Tesla’s current recall information or NHTSA’s recall lookup. Do not assume eligibility or ineligibility based only on a model year or a recall’s production dates.
- If Tesla identifies an open recall, follow the current instructions for that VIN. Replacement remedies and software remedies differ by issue; a past software-version reference does not establish the vehicle’s present recall status.
How to read the “dug our own grave” remark
The remark is best read as a vivid description of the manufacturing difficulty Tesla faced while trying to scale Cybertruck production. Tesla’s later filing confirms that Cybertruck costs and the ramp affected company-wide automotive cost and margin measures in 2024. Neither fact alone answers how strong demand was, how many vehicles were made or sold, or whether the model was profitable on its own. The safety-recall record addresses specific defects and remedies, not those business questions.
