The trend is real, but “take over” is too broad. The evidence shows a commercially meaningful niche—not a majority of Tesla owners abandoning Musk or a sticker on every Tesla.

The trend is real, but “take over” is too strong. Available reporting shows a visible and commercially meaningful niche of owners distancing themselves from Musk—not evidence that most Tesla drivers have turned against him or that anti-Musk decals are appearing on all, or even most, Teslas.

Why Tesla owners are putting anti-Musk messages on their cars
For some owners, the decal solves an identity problem. They may have bought a Tesla for its electric powertrain, charging network, performance, technology, or lower operating costs. But Musk is not a distant executive unknown to the public. He is Tesla’s co-founder and has served as its chief executive since October 2008. His personal profile is therefore unusually difficult to separate from the company’s image.
That association became more politically charged during the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign and afterward. Musk supported Donald Trump, spent heavily in U.S. politics, and used his public platforms to promote right-wing political content. For Tesla owners who disagree with those politics, the vehicle can feel like an unintended public statement.
An anti-Musk sticker is one way to make the intended statement explicit: I chose the vehicle, not the CEO’s politics. The message is less about changing the car than about changing how strangers interpret its owner.

The most recognizable design is “I Bought This Before Elon Went Crazy,” along with the less confrontational variation “I bought this before we knew Elon was crazy.” Other designs use direct criticism or humor:
- “Anti Elon Tesla Club”
- “Elon Killed My Resale Value”
- “Elon Is a Dogebag”
- “Space Clown”
These products are not limited to conventional bumper stickers. NPR reported in April 2025 that MadPufferStickers, a shop operated by sticker entrepreneur Matthew Hiller, sold stickers, magnets, and clings. Hiller told NPR that the shop had sold 70,000 items across Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Redbubble, and had generated more than $100,000 during a 30-day period between January and February 2025. Those figures are seller-reported rather than independently audited market data, so they show demand for one merchant’s products—not the total size of the anti-Musk Tesla market.
For readers looking for the same kind of product, an anti-Elon Tesla bumper sticker is the most precise search term. A magnetic version or a Tesla window cling may be preferable to an adhesive decal for an owner who wants to remove the message later. Availability, slogans, sellers, and marketplace listings can change, and neither format should be treated as a security product.
Why the backlash resonates with Tesla’s traditional customer base
Tesla’s early appeal was closely connected to environmental concerns and clean-energy technology. Its customers have also tended to include many buyers in liberal-leaning regions. That creates a political mismatch when the company’s most recognizable leader becomes strongly associated with positions opposed by some of those customers.

Axios described this as a conflict between Musk’s politics and parts of Tesla’s customer base. The Guardian likewise reported that Musk’s political activity was prompting some owners to explain why they still drove the vehicles. The sticker is therefore not necessarily a sign that the owner dislikes the car. It can be a sign that the owner expects other people to make assumptions about the car—and wants to correct them.
There is also a practical reason some owners may keep driving a Tesla even while distancing themselves from Musk. Selling a vehicle can mean accepting a financial loss, replacing a vehicle that still works well, giving up familiar charging and software features, or buying another EV before the owner is ready. A decal is cheaper and more immediate than replacing the car.
What the research says about Musk’s effect on Tesla demand
Surveys and academic research suggest that the sticker phenomenon reflects a broader reputational problem, although the evidence does not support blaming every Tesla difficulty on Musk.
Purchase intentions
A peer-reviewed study published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications examined five studies conducted between August 2023 and March 2025. It found that liberal participants were less willing to purchase a Tesla than a generic electric vehicle. The research also linked negative perceptions of Musk and Tesla with lower stated intentions to buy a Tesla.

The study measured stated purchase intentions and experimental responses; it was not a complete count of vehicle purchases that Tesla lost. A person who says a political figure makes a Tesla less appealing may still buy one because of price, range, charging access, availability, or a particular model’s features.
Estimated effect on sales
A Yale working paper took a different approach, combining vehicle-registration data with political-affiliation data. Its model estimated that, without the measured “Musk partisan effect,” Tesla sales from October 2022 through April 2025 might have been 67% to 82% higher—roughly 1 million to 1.25 million additional vehicles. The analysis also estimated that some demand shifted toward competing electric and hybrid vehicles.
Those numbers are substantial, but they are estimates produced by a model, not a direct tally of cars that were rejected solely because of Musk. The result depends on the study’s identification assumptions and on how the researchers separate political effects from other changes in the auto market. It is best read as evidence that Musk’s politics may have had a large measurable effect, not as proof that politics explains every missed Tesla sale.

Tesla’s sales and reputation have more than one problem
Political backlash is only one factor competing for attention. Tesla has also faced stronger competition from established automakers and newer EV brands, changes in its vehicle lineup, model-cycle timing, pricing decisions, interest rates, and broader economic conditions.
For context, the Associated Press reported that Tesla registrations in 32 European countries fell 49% year over year in April 2025, from 14,228 to 7,261. Coverage cited backlash against Musk as part of the explanation, but also noted product-model changeovers and competition. A single monthly registration result cannot isolate the effect of politics.
Public opinion is similarly polarized. Pew Research Center reported in February 2025 that 42% of Americans held a favorable view of Musk. A separate 2025 study of brand politicization found that Democrats generally viewed Tesla more negatively after Musk endorsed Trump and took on a larger political role, while Republicans became more favorable during the early period studied. That suggests Musk may alienate some potential customers while making the brand more appealing to others—a politically divided audience is not the same thing as a uniformly collapsing one.
Do anti-Musk stickers protect Teslas from vandalism?
Some owners and commentators have suggested that an anti-Musk decal could signal that the driver is not politically aligned with Musk, potentially reducing hostility toward the vehicle. That interpretation should remain cautious.
The FBI documented arson, gunfire, and vandalism targeting Tesla vehicles, dealerships, storage lots, and charging stations in at least nine states beginning in January 2025. The agency described the incidents as criminal acts by apparent lone offenders, with some graffiti expressing grievances against perceived political opponents.
But the existence of that violence does not show that a sticker prevents vandalism, deters criminals, or improves an owner’s safety. There is no reliable evidence that a particular slogan protects a car. Owners who use these products should view them as political or humorous identity signals—not as defensive equipment. A removable magnetic Tesla protest sign or window cling may be easier to take off, but removability alone does not guarantee protection for paint or glass.

Late-2024 reporting from Electrek described a range of reactions. Some Tesla owners said they planned to sell their cars. Others planned to keep them and add bumper stickers explaining that driving a Tesla did not mean supporting Musk. These accounts are anecdotal and do not establish how many owners actually followed through.

The split reflects two different costs. Selling addresses the symbolic problem by ending the owner’s association with the Tesla brand, but it can create a financial and practical burden. Keeping the car preserves its utility but leaves the owner connected to a brand increasingly identified with its CEO. A sticker is a compromise: retain the vehicle while publicly rejecting the association.
What the stickers really mean
The most defensible interpretation is not that Tesla owners as a group are revolting against Musk. It is that some owners are managing an increasingly uncomfortable brand identity in public.
The products document a specific kind of consumer behavior: people separating a purchase from the public conduct of the person who leads the company. Some buyers may genuinely oppose Musk. Others may be using irony, humor, or a defensive explanation. Available reporting does not provide a representative survey of sticker purchasers, so it cannot tell us how every decal owner feels.
Still, the visibility of slogans such as “Anti Elon Tesla Club” shows why Tesla’s executive-brand connection matters. Owners can value an EV’s engineering and practicality while disliking the CEO’s politics. The sticker is the contradiction made visible—an acknowledgment that, for better or worse, driving a Tesla can now be read as a political statement even when the driver does not intend it that way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have anti-Musk stickers really taken over Tesla cars?
No. Reporting documents a visible and commercially meaningful niche, but there is no representative evidence that most Tesla owners use anti-Musk decals or that they have appeared on most Teslas.
Can an anti-Musk sticker protect a Tesla from vandalism?
Some owners may use them to signal that they do not endorse Musk, but no reliable evidence shows that a sticker prevents vandalism, deters criminals, or improves safety. Treat decals, magnets, and clings as political or humorous messages—not security products.

How popular are anti-Elon Tesla stickers?
Seller-reported figures cited by NPR said MadPufferStickers sold 70,000 items across Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Redbubble and generated more than $100,000 in a 30-day period in early 2025. Those figures were not independently audited and do not represent the entire market.
Are Musk’s politics hurting Tesla sales?
Research indicates that negative perceptions of Musk are associated with weaker Tesla purchase intentions, especially among liberal consumers. A Yale working paper also estimated a substantial partisan effect on Tesla sales, but the estimate is model-based and does not explain every sales decline.
The Bottom Line
Anti-Musk Tesla stickers are a visible form of identity management, not proof that all Tesla owners oppose Elon Musk or that decals can prevent vandalism. Some drivers are keeping vehicles they value while making clear that the purchase should not be read as an endorsement of Musk’s politics. Research supports a meaningful relationship between Musk’s public image and Tesla demand, but competition, pricing, product timing, and economic conditions also shape the company’s results.
