Bonneville speed runs are canceled when officials cannot establish a continuous, stable and safe salt course—not because a universal rain gauge reading has been reached. Rain can leave standing water, soften or damage the salt crust, or trigger flooding. Even without fresh rain, erosion and deterioration can leave too little usable salt for a safe measured course. Organizers may also pause or move runs as weather and course conditions change during an event.
There is no single rainfall amount, salt-moisture percentage, wind limit or minimum mileage that automatically cancels every Bonneville event. The decision is specific to the venue, the course that can be prepared, the event promoter and the conditions documented at that time.

What has to be true for a Bonneville run to happen?
Land-speed racing requires more than a broad expanse of white ground. Officials need a course with enough firm, predictable salt to support high-speed acceleration, timed runs and braking. The surface must remain usable along the racing line and in the areas needed for staging, return roads and emergency access.
Three practical tests drive the decision:
- Surface condition: The salt must be firm enough for vehicles to launch, track straight and stop without unacceptable risk.
- Continuity and length: There must be enough connected, suitable salt to lay out the event’s course and safety zones.
- Protection of the salt resource: Officials must avoid operations that would rut or dissolve the delicate salt layer, because damage can affect future events as well as the current one.
Those tests are related but not interchangeable. A site can be dry yet too deteriorated for a safe course, or it can have plenty of salt in total but no continuous strip long enough for the planned layout.

Why rain and standing water are a problem
Flooding can close the venue
The clearest recent example is the 2022 Speed Week cancellation. A Bureau of Land Management (BLM) account on Recreation.gov records that large rainfall in August caused flooding and resulted in the event being canceled. That is an example of what happened in 2022, not a rule that the same amount of rain will produce the same result every year.
Wet salt can be damaged by traffic
BLM cautions against driving on wet salt because vehicle traffic can damage the delicate salt layer. Tires and heavy loads can cut ruts, break the crust and move brine or loose material. If the surface cannot carry traffic without that damage, opening a course would trade a short-term race for lasting resource loss.
Water changes the usable surface
Water can collect in low spots, hide soft areas and make traction inconsistent from one part of a lane to another. A surface that appears passable from a distance may still be unsuitable for high-speed acceleration or braking. Standing water also complicates access for support vehicles, recovery equipment and emergency crews. Officials therefore evaluate where water is and whether it can drain or evaporate in time, rather than relying on a simple total-rainfall number.
How the salt flats form—and why that does not guarantee a raceable course
BLM explains that heavy winter snow and rainfall, followed by high summer temperatures and dry conditions, promote evaporation and help create the white salt crust associated with the Bonneville Salt Flats. This broad seasonal cycle supplies the ingredients for crust formation: precipitation brings water and dissolved minerals, while later drying leaves salt behind.
The same process does not promise that a particular year will produce a safe racing surface. A wet event period can interrupt access before drying occurs. Repeated wetting, erosion, flooding or other deterioration can also leave an uneven or fragmented crust. Seasonal weather is therefore part of the background condition, while the event decision depends on the actual surface available when organizers inspect and prepare the course.

Why course length and continuity matter
Speed events need a measurable racing distance plus room for acceleration, deceleration, timing equipment, staging and safety operations. If only isolated patches are firm, officials cannot simply add them together to create a safe track.
A 2015 report from the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) illustrates the issue. SEMA said organizers could identify no more than 2¼ miles of salt suitable for a safe course before that year’s Speed Week cancellation. The report also described the international track as having previously been 13 miles long and as reduced to 8 miles or less at the time. These are historical figures from the 2015 account, not current measurements or universal requirements for every Bonneville event.
The important point is the distinction between total salt-flat area and usable, connected course. Officials need enough continuous surface for the specific event layout. If deterioration leaves less than that, cancellation can occur even when large areas still look white.
Weather can delay runs without canceling the event
Conditions can change hour by hour. The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (BMST) 2026 schedule states that running times depend on weather and course conditions and may be moved forward or extended at the promoters’ discretion. That allows officials to use a safe window, stop while a storm passes, or extend the program when an earlier delay reduced track time.
A schedule change is not the same decision as a full cancellation. A pause may address a temporary shower, lightning risk, wind shift, water on one section or a course-preparation issue. Cancellation is more likely when the surface cannot be made safe or when the remaining usable course is inadequate for the event’s needs.

Is there a rainfall amount that automatically cancels Bonneville?
No universal threshold is established in the available official material. The sources do not specify one current rainfall total, salt-moisture percentage, wind-speed ceiling or minimum course length that applies to every Bonneville event.
Rainfall totals alone can mislead. The result depends on where the rain falls, whether water ponds, how quickly the surface dries, the condition of the salt before the storm, and whether a continuous course can be prepared afterward. A smaller storm over a vulnerable section may matter more than a larger storm that drains away from the racing line.
When an organizer publishes a numerical limit for a particular event, that limit governs that event. Until then, treat online rules of thumb—such as a claimed number of inches of rain or a fixed number of miles—as unofficial, unless the promoter or land manager states them.
How officials reach a go, delay or cancel decision
Although each promoter has its own procedures, the practical decision sequence looks like this:
- Inspect the site: Staff evaluate standing water, wetness, ruts, soft areas, erosion and the condition of access routes.
- Map the usable salt: They determine whether a continuous strip can support the planned racing distance, timing points, shutdown area and emergency access.
- Assess further weather: Forecast rain, heat, wind and drying time are considered alongside current observations. A surface that is marginal now may become unusable if another storm arrives.
- Protect the resource: Officials consider whether moving vehicles onto wet or fragile salt would cause damage that cannot be repaired during the event.
- Choose the operational response: The promoter may open a shortened or adjusted schedule, delay runs, move the day’s running window, extend the program, or cancel.
- Publish updates: Participants and spectators are directed to the event’s official channels for the current decision.
This process explains why two events at the same location can receive different outcomes. The course layout, vehicle class, inspection findings and forecast can all differ.

Historical examples show two different failure modes

Neither example supplies a current pass/fail specification. They show why both weather and surface availability belong in the decision.

Bonneville events are run by different organizations, so there is no single cross-organizer alert channel identified in the official material.
Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials
BMST’s conditions page reproduces an American Motorcyclist Association supplemental rule stating: “The event promoters, sponsors and officials shall not be responsible for delays, postponements, or cancellations due to weather or course conditions or acts of God for any reason….” The quotation is presented by BMST as part of its event rules. BMST also directs entrants to its event updates, and its 2026 schedule lists the website, social channels, the Sportity app and FM radio as update routes. Because the schedule is weather-dependent, check those channels immediately before traveling and again during the meet.
SCTA-BNI events
The Southern California Timing Association and Bonneville Nationals Inc. (SCTA-BNI) publish separate Bonneville event information. Their notices, rather than a BMST schedule, control an SCTA-BNI event. Use the organizer named on your entry confirmation or event page.

BLM and Recreation.gov provide information about the Bonneville Salt Flats Special Recreation Management Area, including the historical 2022 cancellation and warnings about driving on wet salt. Those pages explain the land and resource conditions; the event promoter remains the source for a specific race’s operating decision.

What participants and spectators should do
- Identify the promoter: Confirm whether the event is BMST, SCTA-BNI or another organizer before relying on an update.
- Check official notices close to departure: A schedule printed months earlier cannot account for a new storm or a changed course inspection.
- Allow for schedule movement: Plan for a delayed start, an earlier running window or an extended program when the organizer says times are weather-dependent.
- Do not drive onto wet salt to inspect it yourself: BLM’s warning exists to protect the salt layer. Stay on routes and areas authorized by officials.
- Keep cancellation coverage and travel plans flexible: Weather and course decisions can be outside the promoter’s control, as the BMST rule language explains.
Common misconceptions
“The flats are white, so the course is ready.”
Color does not show whether the crust is firm, continuous or free of standing water. Officials need a measured, usable racing surface, not merely a dry-looking landscape.
“Any rain means an automatic cancellation.”
Rain can cause a delay, a reroute, a shortened program or a cancellation, depending on its effects. The available sources document a flood-related cancellation in 2022 but do not establish an automatic response to every shower.
“Two and a quarter miles is the minimum Bonneville track.”
That number belongs to SEMA’s 2015 report of how much suitable salt organizers could identify before that specific cancellation. It is not a current rule or a universal minimum.

“A forecast alone decides the event.”
Forecasts matter, but officials also inspect actual water, salt integrity, course continuity and access. The BMST schedule’s weather-and-course wording reflects that combined assessment.
The practical bottom line
Bonneville speed runs are canceled when the combination of wetness, flooding, deterioration and available course area leaves no defensible way to run safely while protecting the salt flats. Rain is important because it can flood the venue and make the crust vulnerable to traffic, but there is no all-events rainfall cutoff. A historical 2022 flood cancellation and the 2015 report of only 2¼ suitable miles show two distinct paths to a shutdown. For any upcoming meet, the controlling answer comes from that event’s promoter after its latest course inspection, so follow the organizer’s current notices rather than an old mileage figure or an internet rule of thumb.
