1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWash the car after driving on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) states in its Bonneville Salt Flats brochure: “Salt residue is corrosive and should be washed off of vehicles.” That is the essential guidance, even though the cited material does not prescribe a Bonneville-specific wash sequence, rinse duration, pressure setting, or deadline for preventing damage.
Salt left on the body and accessible underside surfaces can remain in places that are hard to see. The practical response is to remove visible residue promptly, rinse reachable areas beneath the vehicle, and use a local wash only after confirming that it is open and offers the equipment you need. A specialty salt-removal product is optional; manufacturer claims about such products are not the same as independent comparative testing.

Why Bonneville salt is a problem for vehicles
The BLM’s warning is direct: salt residue is corrosive and should be washed off vehicles. Corrosion is the reason a post-run wash matters, but the available BLM material does not quantify a time-to-damage window, identify a universal failure point, or establish that one rinse removes every deposit from every hidden cavity.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Bonneville Salt Flats are described by the BLM as approximately 90% common table salt. The BLM’s current visitor information likewise describes the flats as mostly sodium chloride. That percentage describes the salt flats themselves, not a laboratory measurement of the residue on a particular car. Deposits on a vehicle can include moisture, dust and other material picked up during travel, so the safest conclusion is simply that the white film is a corrosive salt residue that should be removed.

The flats cover about 30,000 acres, according to the BLM. That figure explains the scale of the setting, not the amount of material that will land on a particular vehicle. A short pass over dry salt and a drive through damp or standing salt can leave very different visible deposits, so judge the cleaning job by inspection rather than by mileage or elapsed time.
Where residue can remain
Visible white crust on wheels, rocker panels, mud flaps or the lower doors is easy to notice. Underside surfaces are less obvious because they are shaded and difficult to inspect without lifting the vehicle. A wash that reaches only the roof and upper body may leave residue on accessible portions of the chassis, suspension area, exhaust exterior, wheel wells and floor-pan surfaces. This is a practical cleaning concern, not a claim that every one of those components will corrode at the same rate.
Wheel wells and lower edges deserve a second look because they are close to the surface and may collect spray as the vehicle moves. A clean-looking upper body therefore cannot serve as proof that the underside is clean. Inspect only from a safe position unless you have manufacturer-approved lifting and support equipment.

What the evidence does not establish
- There is no cited, vehicle-maker-approved Bonneville wash protocol.
- The BLM material does not set a required rinse duration or pressure setting.
- No source here gives a guaranteed number of hours or days before damage occurs.
- No independent test in the cited material proves that a specialty product outperforms plain water for every vehicle.
- No source verifies that one automatic wash reaches every enclosed cavity, seam or protected surface.
Those limits do not weaken the basic instruction to wash. They mean you should treat the cleaning procedure below as a careful practical interpretation of the BLM’s advice, not as an official test standard.
What to do immediately after a Bonneville run
The most defensible sequence is to arrange a thorough wash as soon as practical after leaving the flats, while following your vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for washing, jacking and access around sensitive equipment. The goal is removal from exposed bodywork and from underside areas that can be reached safely; no single wash can be represented as a guarantee for sealed or inaccessible cavities.
There is no published Bonneville-specific countdown that makes a wash safe on one side of a deadline and unsafe on the other. “As soon as practical” is therefore a prevention-minded recommendation, not a measured corrosion timetable. If the first available facility is later than expected, do not interpret that delay as proof that residue is harmless; arrange the earliest suitable cleaning and inspect the vehicle afterward.
1. Plan the wash before you travel
Decide where the vehicle will be cleaned before the run. The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials event information says car washes for vehicles and rental cars are in town. That supports looking for a local facility, but it does not verify a particular provider, current opening hours or the availability of an underbody cycle. Confirm those details directly before relying on the facility.
- Ask whether the wash is open on the day and time you expect to arrive.
- Ask whether the equipment reaches wheel wells or the underside, rather than assuming it does.
- Check any vehicle-height, trailer or operating restrictions.
- Ask whether the wash is self-service or automatic if that affects your ability to direct water at lower areas.
- Keep a backup plan if a local facility is closed or lacks an underbody option.
A town wash listing is logistical information, not an endorsement. Verify the address, hours and services when you are actually planning the trip because those details can change.

2. Let the vehicle cool and inspect it
Park on a suitable surface and allow hot components to cool according to the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance. Walk around the vehicle and note visible crust or damp salt on the tires, wheels, lower body and wheel arches. Look under the front, center and rear from a safe standing position. Do not put any part of your body under an unsupported vehicle; use only lifting and support equipment approved for your vehicle and the location.
Inspection before washing gives you a reference for the areas that need attention. It also helps you tell the difference between a clean surface and one that simply was not visible from above. Photographing a problem area for your own records can help you explain it to a technician, but a photograph is not a substitute for a professional inspection.
3. Rinse exposed surfaces first
Use clean water to flush loose residue from the roof downward, then work across the lower body, wheels and wheel arches. This ordering is a practical way to avoid carrying loosened material back onto areas already cleaned. The cited BLM text supports washing the residue off, but it does not prescribe a nozzle, pressure, soap or number of passes. Use settings that are safe for your paint, trim, sensors and seals, and follow the vehicle maker’s instructions.
Do not turn a preferred technique into a universal rule. Some owners may use a hose, while a facility may use an automatic or self-service system. The supported objective is removal of residue, not a particular brand of equipment, water temperature or detergent. If the owner’s manual places limits on pressure or directs you away from specific components, those vehicle-specific limits take priority.
4. Reach accessible underside areas
Direct the rinse toward underside surfaces that can be reached without placing yourself beneath an unsupported vehicle. Pay attention to the lower edges and wheel-well areas where spray and road material commonly collect. If a facility offers a dedicated underbody wash, verify what it actually covers and whether it is suitable for your vehicle. Do not infer that a visible spray pattern reaches every enclosed space.
Accessible does not mean “everything you can see from a crouch.” Never create a safety hazard by reaching under a vehicle that is supported only by a jack. If a proper inspection requires lifting, use approved support equipment or have a qualified shop do it.
5. Check the result instead of assuming it is complete
After rinsing, inspect the lower doors, wheel wells, wheels and visible underside surfaces again. A remaining white film indicates that more washing is needed. If you cannot safely inspect a section, record it as unverified rather than claiming the salt has been removed. The BLM recommendation is to wash residue off; it is not a certification that one cycle has reached every hidden area.

Look for the same visible areas you checked before washing. If damp salt has dried into a new crust, repeat the rinse where safe. If a surface looks damaged rather than merely dirty, stop treating it as a wash problem and arrange a qualified inspection.

6. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions
If your owner’s manual specifies limits for pressure washing, sensors, camera lenses, electrical connectors, underbody coatings or lifting points, follow those instructions. The sources used for this article do not establish one pressure setting, detergent, drying method or protective coating that is safe for every make and model.
Plain-water washing, a local wash and specialty products
The evidence supports washing, but it does not provide a controlled comparison of different methods. The choices below are therefore a decision framework, not a performance ranking.
| Option | What is supported | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Thorough rinse with clean water | Directly consistent with the BLM instruction to wash corrosive salt residue off vehicles. | The cited material does not establish a required pressure, duration, soap or guarantee of access to hidden cavities. |
| Local car wash | The event information page says car washes for vehicles and rental cars are in town. | Confirm the current location, opening hours, vehicle restrictions and whether an underbody wash is available. |
| Purpose-made salt-removal product | Salt-Away markets a vehicle salt-removal product and describes Bonneville racing use. | Those are manufacturer statements. No independent comparison in the cited material establishes superiority over plain water for every vehicle. |
When a specialty product may fit
A purpose-made option can be considered if you want a product specifically marketed for salt removal or if its instructions suit your washing setup. Salt-Away describes applying its product to personal vehicles, mentions Bonneville racing applications, and describes both pre-exposure use and application during cleanup. Treat those as the manufacturer’s directions and claims, not as a requirement from the BLM or an independently verified guarantee.
Read the product label for dilution, compatible surfaces, application steps and rinsing instructions. Check that the formulation and equipment are appropriate for your vehicle. The cited material does not verify current formulation, stock, pricing or results on every vehicle type. Before buying, compare the product’s instructions with your owner’s manual rather than assuming that a product marketed for racing is automatically suitable for every car, truck, rental vehicle or trailer.
How to decide whether you need another wash
There is no cited corrosion timer that tells you exactly when a second wash is mandatory. Use observable residue and safe inspection instead.
Wash again when
- White crust or a gritty film remains on lower panels, wheels or wheel arches.
- Residue is still visible on accessible underside surfaces after the first rinse.
- The vehicle was driven through wet or standing salt and the first wash was only a quick exterior cycle.
- A wash facility did not include the wheel wells or underside areas you intended to clean.
- You can still see deposits after the surface has dried enough for a meaningful inspection.
Stop and get qualified help when
- You would need to crawl under a vehicle that is supported only by a jack.
- You find flaking, swelling, damaged coating or a component that appears compromised.
- You are unsure whether pressure or chemicals could affect sensors, electrical equipment or a specialty underbody treatment.
- You cannot determine whether a mark is residue or physical damage.
Cleaning removes residue; it does not repair corrosion that has already begun. If you see a mechanical, structural or electrical concern, have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician rather than trying to solve it with additional spray.
Bonneville access and timing considerations
Cleaning plans should account for changing conditions at the flats. The BLM’s current Bonneville information says motor-vehicle use is seasonally limited when the salt is moist or standing water is present. The BLM brochure also cautions that travel is at the visitor’s own risk and advises avoiding wet or flooded salt.

Check current BLM information before traveling. An old event schedule should not be treated as a current access notice, and a route that was open on one date may be restricted when the surface is wet. Avoiding wet or flooded salt protects the site and reduces the chance of bringing a heavier, wetter deposit onto the vehicle, but it does not remove the need to wash after a run.

Access guidance and cleaning guidance answer different questions. A closure or seasonal restriction tells you whether motor-vehicle travel is allowed under current conditions; it does not state that a vehicle used during an open period is free from corrosive residue. Conversely, planning a wash does not authorize travel on a closed or wet section of the flats.
A practical post-run checklist
- Check access: review current BLM conditions and avoid wet or flooded salt as directed.
- Confirm your destination: verify a local wash’s current hours and whether it can clean the vehicle type you are driving.
- Review the owner’s manual: note washing, pressure, lifting-point and sensor precautions.
- Inspect before washing: identify salt on the body, wheels, wheel wells and visible underside surfaces.
- Rinse methodically: start with upper surfaces and work down to lower panels and accessible underside areas.
- Reinspect: look for remaining white film or crust instead of assuming one cycle was complete.
- Use optional products correctly: if you choose a specialty salt remover, follow its label and keep its benefits in the manufacturer-claim category.
- Escalate damage: obtain a professional inspection for signs of corrosion or component damage.
Common mistakes to avoid
Waiting for a problem you can see
Corrosion risk is the reason the BLM says to wash salt residue off. Waiting for visible rust before cleaning defeats that basic preventive step. The sources do not establish a precise deadline, so do not turn the absence of a timer into permission to delay indefinitely.
Assuming the roof wash cleaned the underside
Upper-body water flow is not proof that accessible underside surfaces were reached. Inspect and rinse those areas separately where it can be done safely.
Assuming every car wash has an underbody cycle
The event page supports the existence of car washes in town, not a promise about a particular facility’s equipment. Ask before arriving and confirm what the cycle covers.
Treating a product advertisement as a comparative test
Salt-Away’s Bonneville and vehicle-use statements come from its manufacturer. They do not establish independent superiority, universal compatibility or a guarantee against corrosion.
Using an old access assumption
Seasonal moisture and standing water can limit motor-vehicle access. Check current BLM conditions before setting out and follow closures or restrictions.
Confusing a clean appearance with verified removal
Salt can be hidden from a standing inspection. A shiny roof and clean windows do not demonstrate that wheel wells or accessible underside surfaces were rinsed. Reinspect the lower vehicle and note any areas you could not safely reach.

The established points are narrow but sufficient for a sound decision: the BLM identifies salt residue as corrosive, tells visitors to wash it off vehicles, and describes the flats as approximately 90% common table salt or mostly sodium chloride. The BLM also reports that the flats cover 30,000 acres, a useful sense of scale but not a cleaning specification.

The cited information does not settle how quickly corrosion develops, whether plain water is equivalent to a specialty product, how long a rinse must last, or which pressure and detergent combination is safe for every vehicle. It also does not verify a current named wash business, hours or underbody equipment. Those are reasons to inspect, verify and follow vehicle-specific instructions—not reasons to skip the wash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bonneville residue really table salt?
The BLM describes the flats as approximately 90% common table salt, and its current visitor information says they are mostly sodium chloride. That describes the flats, not a measured sample of residue on your specific vehicle. The practical point is that the BLM identifies the residue as corrosive and says to wash it off.
How soon after a run must I wash the vehicle?
The cited BLM material gives no tested number of hours or days. Arrange a thorough wash as soon as practical, and do not treat the absence of a published timer as permission to leave visible residue indefinitely.
Will a normal exterior car wash clean the underside?
Not necessarily. The event information supports that car washes are in town, but it does not verify a particular facility’s equipment. Ask whether the wash reaches wheel wells and accessible underside areas, and confirm current hours and restrictions.
Can I use a pressure washer?
The cited sources do not set a universal pressure or nozzle setting. Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for paint, trim, sensors, seals, electrical connectors and underbody components, and never place yourself beneath an unsupported vehicle.
Is Salt-Away required after Bonneville?
No. Salt-Away is an optional commercial product whose manufacturer markets vehicle salt-removal use and Bonneville applications. The BLM requires washing residue off vehicles but does not require that product, and the cited material contains no independent test proving it outperforms plain water for every vehicle.
What if I drove through wet or standing salt?
The BLM says motor-vehicle use is seasonally limited when salt is moist or standing water is present and advises avoiding wet or flooded salt. Check current access information before traveling. If travel was permitted and the vehicle acquired residue, inspect and wash the accessible surfaces as soon as practical.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should I do if I see damage after washing?
Cleaning removes residue but does not repair corrosion or other damage. Stop if you see flaking, swelling, damaged coating or a component that appears compromised, and arrange an inspection by a qualified technician.
The Bottom Line
The BLM’s instruction is simple: salt residue is corrosive and should be washed off vehicles. After a Bonneville run, plan a wash as soon as practical, rinse visible bodywork and safely accessible underside areas, verify what a local facility actually covers, and follow your vehicle manufacturer’s care instructions. Do not assume one cycle reaches hidden cavities, and treat specialty-product benefits as manufacturer claims rather than proven requirements.
