Revel permanently shut down its New York City ride-hail service on August 11, 2025. The company’s EV-charging business continued, and Revel later became part of Voltera. The decision was a strategic pivot away from competing with Uber and Lyft in rideshare and toward building public fast-charging infrastructure for EV drivers, fleets, and autonomous vehicles.
Revel permanently shut down its New York City ride-hail service on August 11, 2025. The Brooklyn-based company did not leave electric transportation, however. It ended the customer-facing rideshare operation and redirected its business toward public fast-charging infrastructure. Revel later combined with Voltera; Revel’s website says the combination took effect on June 30, 2026.

That makes the shutdown more than the end of another small rideshare app. It marks the unwinding of Revel’s original vertical-integration strategy: operate an all-electric ride-hail fleet, use that fleet to anchor demand at Revel charging hubs, and build a broader EV ecosystem in dense cities. By 2025, Revel said its charging sites were attracting far more outside demand, while its ride-hail service remained tiny beside Uber and Lyft.
What Revel actually shut down
The August 11, 2025 decision applied to Revel’s New York City ride-hail service. Customers could no longer use Revel as a rideshare provider, and the company planned to sell or return the Tesla and Kia vehicles used in its fleet. It also planned to sell the associated for-hire vehicle license plates, according to reporting that cited Bloomberg and statements from CEO and co-founder Frank Reig.

The closure did not mean Revel stopped operating EV chargers. The company said it would continue expanding its fast-charging business, which included public sites in New York and San Francisco and planned airport projects at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.
In practical terms, Revel stopped being a consumer ride-hail operator while continuing to pursue the infrastructure business that supported its original fleet.
Why Revel abandoned ride-hail
Revel entered New York ride-hailing in August 2021 with an all-electric fleet and employee drivers. The service served two purposes: it created a ride-hail business and provided dependable utilization for Revel’s expensive fast-charging hubs. The company also viewed the service as a way to expose passengers to electric vehicles.

Uber and Lyft were operating at an entirely different scale
Revel competed in one of the world’s largest and most crowded ride-hail markets. A contemporary report citing New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission data said Revel averaged about 100,000 rides per month, while Uber and Lyft together handled nearly 20 million trips in June 2025.
Those figures do not by themselves prove that Revel’s ride-hail operation was unprofitable; the companies did not disclose the audited revenue, margins, or profitability of the ride-hail and charging divisions in the material reviewed. They do show the competitive disadvantage facing a much smaller operator trying to match platforms with vastly greater trip volume, driver supply, passenger awareness, and network effects.
The charging network needed Revel’s fleet less than before
Revel’s charging business was initially partly dependent on its own vehicles. The company told TechCrunch that, in early 2023, its ride-hail fleet accounted for 19% of charging at its network and overall network utilization was 21%.

- 【Double-sided And All-Weather Protection】For electric car owners lacking garage space, the LZSTEC EV charger port cover is a simple and effective outdoor charging solution. It blocks rain, snow and ice, particularly preventing the charging port from getting jammed with snow and ice in winter, sparing you the pain of cleaning out in the morning. Featuring a double-sided fabric, this EV Charger plug cover's alternate side is silver, offering UV protection for the charging port during the summer
- 【Robust Flexible Two Magnetic Strips for Steel-Bodied EVs】The LZSTEC EV charger cover features two magnetic strips sewn onto the rainproof fabric, providing 80% more magnetic flux than covers with a single strip. These strips can easily fold to fit your steel-bodied electric car and create a strong bond with the car body to isolate rainwater. Capable of supporting up to 9 lbs, these strips ensure the outdoor cover stays in place even if a surplus of snow or ice is deposited in the winter storms
- 【Durable Waterproof Fabric】Crafted from high-grade waterproof canvas, this electric vehicle charger port cover is designed to withstand wind gusts and maintain its excellent condition over time, unlike thinner fabrics that may tear easily
- 【Upgraded Velcro Closure & Size】The end of the electric car charging port cover is designed with a Velcro closure, which is tighter and more durable than a drawstring, allowing the opening to be securely closed around the charger cable to prevent rain and snow from being blown in. Moreover, this EV charger plug cover has been upgraded to a larger size, making it compatible with EVs that have larger charging port areas with dual charging ports.
- 【Confirm Before Purchase: Steel Body Required】①Before ordering, please check the charge-port area of your electric vehicle with a fridge magnet to ensure it sticks. This cover cannot be used on aluminum, carbon fiber, or plastic body panels (such as Mustang Mach-E). ②Adjust the two magnetic strips to ensure the side with the strongest magnetic force (i.e., the side with the gap) faces the body of the electric car for firm adhesion
By early 2025, total utilization had risen to 45%, while Revel’s own fleet accounted for only 12% of charging. That is the key strategic change: independent EV owners and drivers working for competing platforms were increasingly filling the sites.
In other words, the charging hubs had begun to function as an open urban infrastructure business rather than merely as a support system for Revel’s own rides. If outside customers could provide most of the utilization, maintaining a small ride-hail company solely as an anchor customer became harder to justify.
What Revel’s charging business looked like
Before the ride-hail shutdown, Revel operated public, 24/7 fast-charging locations in New York and San Francisco. A December 2024 report described four New York stations with 64 ports and one San Francisco station. Additional projects were planned at JFK and LaGuardia airports.
Revel’s current website describes the network as urban fast charging and lists 100 live charging stalls, with more than 260 additional stalls coming soon. Those figures are company-reported and should not be confused with the later Voltera-Revel figure, which includes both operational stalls and stalls under development.

Revel says a session can take as little as 15 minutes, but the actual time varies with congestion, charger hardware, the vehicle model, battery temperature, battery state of charge, and the vehicle’s charging curve. A quoted 15-minute session is therefore an estimate under suitable conditions, not a universal result for every car.
Connectors and compatibility
Revel locations support multiple connector standards. Its Long Island City location lists CCS1 and NACS connectors. The San Francisco Mission District site lists CCS1 and NACS capability at up to 320 kW.
Drivers should check the specific vehicle and location before arriving. Public DC fast charging in the United States may use CCS, CHAdeMO, or NACS, while Level 1 and Level 2 equipment commonly uses J1772 or NACS-compatible connections. A vehicle’s maximum charging rate can also be lower than the charger’s maximum output.

A J1772-to-NACS adapter can be relevant when a vehicle and charging station use different standards, but an adapter is not automatically safe or compatible for every charging mode. Buyers should verify the vehicle manufacturer’s approved adapter types, whether the adapter supports AC charging, DC fast charging, or both, and the adapter’s electrical ratings before use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy the airport projects mattered
In December 2024, Revel announced plans with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for:
- 24 fast chargers at JFK Airport; and
- 48 charging ports near LaGuardia Airport.
The projects were intended for airport drivers and other EV users. Revel estimated that charging from 20% to 80% could take approximately 15 to 20 minutes under suitable conditions.
Airports are a logical location for Revel’s model. Ride-hail and commercial drivers need quick turnaround, airports concentrate vehicle demand, and many urban drivers do not have access to private home charging. Large hubs can serve several customer groups at once instead of relying on one company’s fleet.
Revel also invited owners of hotels, retail centers, and parking garages to host charging sites. That approach points to a business centered on site selection, power access, construction, and operations—not simply on selling rides through an app.

Revel’s current status: part of Voltera
The latest official company information in the research for this article says Revel is now part of Voltera, effective June 30, 2026. The companies announced the definitive combination on May 26, 2026, so it should not be described merely as an uncompleted proposal.
The combined platform was expected to include more than 1,000 charging stalls operational and under development across 11 major U.S. metropolitan markets. That is a pipeline-and-operating footprint, not a count of live chargers alone.

Voltera describes the combined business as an infrastructure provider for electric fleets, autonomous vehicles, and ride-hail deployment in dense urban markets. Its stated capabilities include site selection, development, power infrastructure, and operations designed for high-utilization fleet customers. Revel CEO Frank Reig was expected to lead the combined company, which operates under the Voltera name.
The change in emphasis is significant. Revel began by pairing a consumer ride-hail service with charging infrastructure. The combined Voltera platform is described primarily around the infrastructure needs of fleets and autonomous mobility. The surviving strategic asset appears to be Revel’s urban charging footprint and experience developing and operating high-throughput sites—not its consumer ride-hail app.

For passengers, the result is straightforward: Revel is no longer a New York ride-hail option. Riders must use another available transportation service.
For EV drivers, the outcome is different. Revel’s charging operation continued after the ride-hail closure, and the business later became part of Voltera. Availability, pricing, connector support, and site status can change, so drivers should check the current station information before making a trip.
Revel’s public DC fast chargers are not interchangeable with ordinary residential equipment. A Level 2 EV charger is generally a home or destination-charging product that adds energy over a longer parking period; it is not a consumer substitute for a commercial DC fast-charging hub. Likewise, a portable EV charger—often a Level 1 EVSE cordset using a household outlet—typically provides much slower charging and requires a suitable, properly grounded electrical circuit.
Before buying any EV charging equipment, confirm:
- the vehicle’s connector and charging standard;
- whether the equipment is for AC Level 1/Level 2 charging or DC fast charging;
- the vehicle’s maximum charging rate;
- the electrical requirements and circuit capacity;
- any manufacturer restrictions on adapters; and
- local electrical-code and installation requirements.
The larger business lesson
Revel’s retreat from ride-hail does not represent a retreat from electrification. It represents a narrower bet on where the company could build a defensible position.

Operating a ride-hail platform requires attracting riders and drivers in a market dominated by enormous networks. Building charging infrastructure requires securing sites, obtaining power, installing hardware, and keeping stations available and well utilized. Revel’s own figures suggested that the second business was gaining demand from a broader customer base even as the first remained comparatively small.

The result was a reversal of the original relationship between the businesses. In 2021, ride-hail helped justify charging hubs. By 2025, the charging hubs appeared increasingly capable of standing on their own, with customers including drivers who did not work for Revel. The Voltera combination takes that infrastructure-first strategy further by targeting commercial fleets, autonomous vehicles, and other high-throughput users.
That interpretation should not be overstated. The available material does not establish that either Revel’s ride-hail business or its charging business was profitable, and the announced stall counts include development projects. What the evidence does show is a clear strategic shift: New York ride-hail ended on August 11, 2025, the charging network continued, and the charging-focused business became part of Voltera in 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Revel shut down completely?
No. Revel permanently closed its New York City ride-hail service on August 11, 2025, but its EV-charging operation continued. Revel’s website later said the charging business had become part of Voltera effective June 30, 2026.
Why did Revel stop offering rides?
Revel said charging-network utilization had improved from 21% in early 2023 to 45% in early 2025, while the share of charging supplied by its own ride-hail fleet fell from 19% to 12%. At the same time, Revel’s roughly 100,000 monthly rides were far below the nearly 20 million monthly trips Uber and Lyft handled together in June 2025.
What happened to Revel after the ride-hail shutdown?
The combined business was announced as a Voltera platform focused on high-throughput charging infrastructure for electric fleets, autonomous vehicles, and ride-hail deployment in dense urban markets. The announced footprint included more than 1,000 stalls operational and under development across 11 major U.S. metropolitan markets.
Which connectors did Revel chargers support?
Revel’s charging sites list CCS1 and NACS support in some locations, but compatibility varies by station and vehicle. Check the current site information and your vehicle’s connector, charging mode, and maximum charging rate before arriving.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Revel shut down its New York City ride-hail service on August 11, 2025, but did not shut down its EV-charging business. The company concluded that its charging network could attract enough outside demand without its own rideshare fleet, then combined that infrastructure operation with Voltera in 2026. Revel’s story is best understood as a shift from operating electric rides to building the urban charging infrastructure that fleets and EV drivers use.
