2025 Toyota Camry XLE AWD Review: Hybrids for All

The 2025 Toyota Camry XLE AWD combines 232 horsepower, 46 mpg combined, a comfortable cabin, and electronic on-demand AWD in Toyota’s new hybrid-only midsize sedan. This review covers performance, pricing, Premium Plus equipment, passenger space, recalls, and whether the XLE AWD is worth choosing over other Camry trims.

The 2025 Toyota Camry XLE AWD is the Camry for buyers who want nearly everything at once: hybrid efficiency, useful acceleration, comfortable equipment, and extra traction without plugging in. It makes 232 net combined horsepower and is rated at 46 mpg combined. The compromises are a soft, comfort-first chassis, a sometimes-busy engine note under hard acceleration, and less headroom than some rivals.

What the 2025 Toyota Camry XLE AWD is

The XLE AWD is the comfort-oriented version of Toyota’s redesigned, ninth-generation Camry. For 2025, every U.S.-market Camry is a hybrid, and the XLE AWD combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, Toyota’s fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, and an electric rear motor. Total system output is 232 net combined horsepower.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That combination gives the Camry XLE AWD a persuasive everyday formula: approximately 46 mpg combined, useful acceleration, a quiet and well-equipped cabin, and extra traction for rain and snow without requiring a plug or a charging station. It is not a plug-in hybrid, a sports sedan, or an off-road vehicle. Its strengths are breadth and predictability rather than excitement.

What changed for the 2025 Camry?

The biggest change is not a minor trim update: Toyota eliminated the previous gasoline-only four-cylinder and V6 engines from the U.S. Camry range. The 2.5-liter hybrid system is now standard across the lineup. The change makes the Camry simpler to understand, but it also means buyers who want a conventional gasoline engine or the old V6’s character must look elsewhere.

Electronic on-demand AWD is available on every Camry grade, including the XLE. Instead of using a mechanical driveshaft to connect the front and rear axles, the system uses a separate electric motor at the rear. Toyota says it can add rear-wheel power during launches, cornering, and slippery-road conditions.

That arrangement has practical advantages: it adds traction without the weight and packaging of a traditional mechanical AWD system, and it works without driver intervention. But it should be understood as a road-weather traction system, not as a substitute for a truck-based four-wheel-drive system or a dedicated off-road vehicle. Tires, ground clearance, and driving technique still matter in snow.

Performance: quick enough, but not sporty

The AWD Camry produces 232 net combined horsepower, up from 225 horsepower in front-wheel-drive versions. The rear motor contributes to the higher AWD system output, while the hybrid motor’s instant low-speed torque gives the sedan a responsive feel away from a stop.

Independent instrumented testing put the XLE AWD’s 0-to-60-mph time at approximately 6.9 seconds. That is a meaningful improvement over the previous-generation Camry Hybrid and makes the XLE AWD comfortably brisk for merging, passing, and urban driving. It does not feel underpowered when driven normally.

The qualification is the powertrain’s response under sustained, aggressive acceleration. Like other Toyota hybrids using an eCVT, the engine can hold high revs while the car continues building speed. The result is smooth and effective but not especially musical. Independent testing found the Camry quick and refined in ordinary driving while identifying the engine note during hard acceleration as one of its weaknesses.

The XLE’s suspension makes a similar trade-off. Its tuning prioritizes calm transportation, absorbing routine road imperfections and minimizing the sense that the car is trying to entertain the driver. The downside is some body movement over larger transitions and less eagerness in corners than the sport-oriented SE or XSE. The XLE AWD is a good choice for a commute or road trip, not for someone choosing a sedan primarily for handling feel.

Fuel economy: the reason to consider the XLE AWD

Toyota and its retail vehicle listings rate the 2025 Camry XLE AWD at 46 mpg city, 46 mpg highway, and 46 mpg combined. The identical city, highway, and combined figures are unusual and make the XLE AWD easy to evaluate: it offers strong efficiency without requiring the buyer to give up AWD or move to a smaller vehicle.

The rating is lower than that of the most efficient front-wheel-drive Camry LE, but it is an attractive compromise for shoppers who want the XLE’s equipment and all-weather traction. The SE AWD also carries the 46/46/46 rating in Toyota’s listings, while the XSE AWD is less efficient because of its sport-oriented configuration and larger wheels.

Independent driving supports the general conclusion that the Camry is a mid-40s-mpg car in mixed use. Test results are not guarantees, however. Highway speed, cold temperatures, hills, tire pressure, fuel blend, payload, traffic, and heating or air-conditioning use can all move real-world consumption meaningfully above or below the official number.

What comes with the XLE?

The XLE is the Camry trim for buyers who want more than basic hybrid transportation without moving all the way to the sport-focused XSE. Its equipment includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Leather- and microfiber-trimmed seating
  • Heated eight-way power-adjustable front seats
  • A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
  • Acoustic laminated front-side glass for improved isolation from wind and road noise

The multimedia touchscreen configuration should be checked on the individual vehicle. Toyota identifies an available 12.3-inch multimedia display for the XLE, so buyers should not assume that every XLE on a dealer lot has identical screen equipment.

The XLE’s appeal is cumulative. No single feature transforms the car, but heated power seats, acoustic glass, digital instrumentation, smartphone integration, and the hybrid system make the trim feel more substantial than an entry-level commuter sedan.

Is Premium Plus worth considering?

The Premium Plus package is the main option that can materially change the XLE AWD’s value proposition. Toyota describes it as adding features including:

  • Ventilated front seats
  • A 10-inch head-up display
  • Panoramic View Monitor
  • Front and rear parking assist with automatic braking
  • Front Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Change Assist
  • Traffic Jam Assist
  • A nine-speaker JBL audio system and related equipment, depending on the vehicle configuration

A representative window sticker in the supplied research listed the package at $4,760. That figure should be treated as a vehicle-specific example rather than a universal transaction price; confirm the actual window sticker and installed equipment before comparing two cars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Traffic Jam Assist also deserves careful explanation. It is not permanently free autonomous driving. Toyota says the feature requires an active Drive Connect trial or subscription and depends on 4G connectivity. The system remains driver assistance, not a reason to stop monitoring traffic or keeping your hands and attention where Toyota requires them.

The panoramic roof can make the cabin look and feel more open, but it takes away some front headroom. Taller drivers should sit in the exact car they plan to buy, especially if it has the panoramic roof, rather than assuming every XLE provides the same clearance.

Comfort, noise, and passenger space

The XLE AWD’s cabin is one of its strongest arguments. The hybrid powertrain is quiet at low speeds, the XLE’s acoustic front-side glass helps reduce wind noise, and the softer suspension suits long commutes and highway travel. The car feels more polished than its price might suggest when it is being driven gently.

Space is more complicated. The Camry has useful rear-seat legroom, but the sloping roofline limits headroom compared with a more upright sedan or crossover. Independent evaluations found front headroom concerns for taller occupants and some rear-seat limitations. The exact experience depends on seat position, body shape, and roof equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Families should test more than the driver’s seat. Bring the people who will regularly sit in back, check rear-seat entry, and install the child seats that will actually be used. A specifications sheet cannot reveal whether a rear-facing seat compromises front-seat comfort or whether a tall passenger’s head contacts the roof.

Safety and driver assistance

The redesigned 2025–2026 Toyota Camry earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation in the midsize-car category. The evaluation includes the relevant crash-test, headlight, pedestrian front-crash-prevention, frontal, and side-performance requirements reported by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on the XLE AWD. Toyota identifies these systems as part of the suite:

  • Pre-Collision System
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist

These features can reduce workload and help avoid or mitigate some conflicts, but they do not replace an attentive driver. Road markings, weather, traffic, sensor obstruction, and system limitations can affect performance.

Pricing and value

Toyota’s launch announcement listed the 2025 XLE at a $33,400 starting MSRP, with AWD priced at $1,525. That produced a launch-price XLE AWD figure of $34,925 before destination, taxes, options, and Toyota’s stated dealer processing and handling fee.

Toyota’s BuyAToyota listing in the supplied research later showed the 2025 XLE AWD at a $35,225 base MSRP. The two figures illustrate why buyers should label a price by its source and timing. Use the current window sticker and local dealer worksheet for the actual car rather than treating an older launch announcement as a guaranteed transaction price.

The XLE AWD makes the most financial sense when its equipment is genuinely useful to you. Heated power seats, acoustic glass, the digital cluster, hybrid efficiency, and AWD form a coherent package. The Premium Plus version is harder to justify automatically because its price can push the car toward more expensive alternatives; choose it for specific features such as ventilated seats, the head-up display, panoramic camera, or parking assistance rather than because the name sounds comprehensive.

How it compares with other Camry trims

  • LE: The likely value and efficiency choice for buyers who want the lowest purchase price and maximum fuel economy. It gives up some of the XLE’s comfort and equipment.
  • XLE FWD: A logical alternative if you want XLE comfort and features but do not regularly drive on snow, steep wet roads, or other surfaces where AWD traction is useful. It also makes 225 horsepower rather than 232.
  • SE AWD: Worth considering if firmer, more athletic responses matter more than the XLE’s comfort-oriented presentation. Its official fuel economy remains strong.
  • XSE AWD: The sportier, more visually aggressive choice, but its larger wheels and sport-oriented setup reduce efficiency relative to the XLE AWD.

AWD is not free, and it is not mechanically equivalent to a conventional driveshaft-based system. The right comparison is the exact XLE FWD and XLE AWD vehicles on the dealer lot, including their equipment, tires, roof, destination charges, and incentives.

Ownership, warranty, and recall checks

Toyota’s published U.S. warranty information lists a 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Covered hybrid components are listed at eight years/100,000 miles, while the hybrid battery is listed at 10 years/150,000 miles, subject to Toyota’s terms and exclusions.

Toyota also lists ToyotaCare scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles and roadside assistance for two years with unlimited mileage. Confirm the current terms with Toyota or the selling dealer, particularly if comparing a leftover 2025 model with a different model year.

Recall status must be checked by VIN. A 2025 NHTSA recall report identified certain Camrys with a 12.3-inch combination-meter software issue that could cause the monitor to go blank. The report described a particular combination of meter and software configurations, not every 2025 Camry, and planned remedy notification for late October through early November 2025.

NHTSA also acknowledged recall 25V869 in December 2025 for certain 2025–2026 Camry Hybrids. The issue involved an improperly tightened bolt inside the hybrid inverter. Incomplete terminal contact could lead to loss of motive power and potentially an electrical short or fire. The notice identified 55,405 potentially affected vehicles across the listed Toyota models; that number does not mean every Camry XLE AWD is involved.

Before buying a new, used, or leftover 2025 Camry, enter its 17-character VIN into the NHTSA recall system and ask the dealer to document the status of any open campaign. A model-year generalization cannot establish whether a specific car is affected or whether its remedy has been completed.

Useful wet-weather accessories

AWD can help the Camry move through rain and snow, but it does not protect the carpet from slush, mud, and wet shoes. For that reason, buyers in snowy or muddy areas may reasonably shop for 2025 Toyota Camry floor mats. Confirm exact model-year and trim fitment, check that the mats do not interfere with pedals, and secure them using the vehicle’s retention system. Never stack an aftermarket mat on top of the original mat.

Buyers who prioritize factory fit can compare Toyota Genuine Camry all-weather floor liners and a 2025 Camry trunk mat. Buyers seeking a direct-fit aftermarket alternative can also investigate WeatherTech floor liners for 2025 Toyota Camry. In either case, verify XLE AWD fitment before ordering; floor shape, retention points, trunk configuration, and model-year compatibility matter more than the brand name alone.

Who should buy the 2025 Camry XLE AWD?

The XLE AWD is a strong match for drivers who:

  • Want a sedan rather than an SUV but regularly encounter snow, rain, or slippery roads.
  • Want mid-40s fuel economy without installing a charger or changing driving habits to accommodate a plug-in hybrid.
  • Value heated power seats, improved noise isolation, digital displays, and smartphone integration.
  • Prefer quiet, comfortable, predictable transportation over aggressive handling.
  • Want strong standard driver assistance and a highly rated crash-tested platform.

It is a weaker match for drivers who:

  • Need maximum front or rear headroom.
  • Dislike the high-revving engine sound that can occur during hard acceleration.
  • Want a sports sedan or a replacement for the previous Camry V6.
  • Do not need AWD and would rather minimize purchase price or maximize fuel economy.

Buying checklist

  1. Compare XLE AWD with XLE FWD. Calculate the real price difference, including destination, dealer charges, options, and incentives.
  2. Read the window sticker. Confirm the actual MSRP, wheels, tires, multimedia screen, roof, audio system, and whether Premium Plus is installed.
  3. Test the seating position. Check front headroom, rear headroom, rear access, and child-seat fit in the exact vehicle.
  4. Drive it hard once. A normal test drive will show the smooth low-speed behavior; a safe acceleration run will reveal whether the eCVT engine sound bothers you.
  5. Check the tires. AWD cannot compensate for worn or unsuitable tires, and the XSE’s larger-wheel configuration may affect ride and economy.
  6. Verify recalls by VIN. Do not rely on a salesperson’s general statement about the 2025 Camry line.
  7. Price Premium Plus by feature. Buy the package for features you will use, not simply for the expectation that every option improves resale value.

Final verdict

The 2025 Toyota Camry XLE AWD is one of the most complete versions of Toyota’s new hybrid-only sedan. Its 232 horsepower, approximately 46 mpg combined, comfortable suspension, standard safety technology, available AWD, and useful XLE equipment cover the needs of a broad group of commuters and families.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not the most engaging Camry, the roomiest midsize sedan, or the cheapest way to access Toyota’s hybrid system. The eCVT can sound strained under full throttle, the soft suspension allows some body movement, and the sloping roof may frustrate taller occupants. But if your priorities are efficiency, traction, comfort, and low-effort daily usability, the XLE AWD makes a strong case without asking you to charge, drive an SUV, or accept sluggish performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 2025 Toyota Camry XLE AWD need to be plugged in?

No. The 2025 Toyota Camry XLE AWD is a conventional hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid. It recharges its battery through the hybrid system and regenerative braking, so it does not require external charging.

What fuel economy does the 2025 Camry XLE AWD get?

Toyota rates the XLE AWD at 46 mpg city, 46 mpg highway, and 46 mpg combined. Actual fuel economy varies with speed, weather, terrain, tire pressure, traffic, payload, fuel, and HVAC use.

How does AWD work on the 2025 Camry XLE AWD?

The Camry XLE AWD uses a dedicated rear electric motor for electronic on-demand AWD rather than a conventional mechanical driveshaft. It is intended to add traction during launches, cornering, and slippery-road driving, not to provide serious off-road capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Traffic Jam Assist free and fully autonomous on the Camry XLE AWD?

Traffic Jam Assist is included with the Premium Plus equipment described by Toyota, but its operation requires an active Drive Connect trial or subscription and 4G connectivity. It remains a driver-assistance feature, not autonomous driving.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the 2025 Camry XLE AWD when you want a comfortable, well-equipped hybrid sedan with 232 horsepower and strong mid-40s fuel economy plus extra wet-weather traction. Choose the XLE FWD or LE if you do not need AWD, and choose the SE or XSE if handling matters more than ride comfort.
