Futurism reported on September 5, 2024, that r/Cybertruck had changed its access setting two days earlier, on September 3. The report linked the move to mockery and trolling, but did not establish the moderators’ reason. What happened to r/Cybertruck?
In a September 5, 2024 report, Futurism said r/Cybertruck had gone private or “restricted” as of Tuesday, September 3. The subreddit was described as a hub for Cybertruck owners and enthusiasts.

According to the report, people outside the community saw a message asking them to request access: “The sub is private/approved only, if you would like to join please use the request to join box.” It added, “Your profile will be checked.” Futurism did not attribute that message to a named moderator.
Why did the Cybertruck subreddit go private?
The moderators’ reason was not confirmed in Futurism’s report. The article said its reporter was not privy to the exact reason, then suggested widespread mockery and trolling were likely factors. That is the reporter’s explanation, not a stated moderator rationale.

So the careful answer is that the access change was reported, while its cause remains unverified in that source. The title’s reference to mockery reflects the report’s framing, not proof that mockery prompted the moderators’ decision.

Reddit’s help page says, “Only members of the community that are approved by moderators can view and participate in private communities.” A restricted community, by contrast, can still be read by anyone even when posting or commenting is limited.
Because Futurism described r/Cybertruck as “private or ‘restricted,’” its wording does not settle which Reddit setting was in effect. The reproduced access message indicates that outsiders were asked to seek approval, but the article does not resolve the platform distinction.

How many members did r/Cybertruck have when it went private?
Futurism reported about 72,000 subscribers for r/Cybertruck before the access change. It also gave r/CyberStuck, a parody community, as having “154,000 and counting” subscribers. Both are figures from the September 2024 article, not current subscriber totals or independently verified live counts.

The September 2024 report cannot establish the subreddit’s present setting. Moderator posts in December 2025 and April 2026 discussed whether and how to adjust access, including proposals involving broader posting access and approval-controlled comments. Those discussions show that access controls remained a subject of debate, but do not establish the exact setting on October 8, 2026.
