The reports raise a practical winter-driving concern, but they do not establish that every Cybertruck has the problem or that Tesla has confirmed a defect. Tesla’s published winter guidance advises clearing snow and ice from the vehicle before driving; the sources available do not identify a specific fix for the headlight-area ledge.
What Cybertruck owners reported
In a Dec. 2, 2024 report, Futurism described owner Joe Fay’s TikTok video and comments from other Cybertruck owners about snow and ice gathering on the front bumper ledge ahead of the headlights. Fay said the lights could become “completely blocked.” Another owner, quoted from a Cybertruck Owners Club forum, described how “the lights get clogged with snowfall.” These are attributed owner accounts, not official technical findings.
Fay later said he had driven a short distance without noticing the lights were blocked, while acknowledging heavier accumulation could still be an issue. That detail illustrates the uncertainty: the report documents owners’ concerns and experiences, not a controlled test or a measure of how often obstruction occurs.
What is and isn’t established
- Reported: Snow and ice accumulated on the front ledge in owners’ accounts and could potentially obscure the headlights.
- Not established by the cited sources: How common the issue is, whether it affects all Cybertrucks, or whether Tesla has identified a design defect.
- No specific fix is documented: The cited article does not include a Tesla statement, recall, regulator investigation, or confirmed engineering remedy for this ledge.
Futurism’s report also says owners discussed wanting a light bar, but it does not verify a compatible or approved product, installation method, or solution. A light bar should not be treated as a proven fix on the basis of that discussion.

What Tesla says to do in winter
Tesla’s Cybertruck Owner’s Manual warns that snow and ice can freeze moving parts, including doors, windows, mirrors, and the wiper. It describes using the Tesla app’s Climate controls and “Defrost Truck” to help melt snow, ice, and frost on the windshield, windows, mirrors, and charge port. The manual passage does not say that this feature heats or clears the headlight ledge.
Tesla Support’s winter driving tips advise checking and clearing exterior surfaces, including snow on the hood, roof, and tailgate, before driving. Tesla also recommends clearing snow, ice, or debris from cameras and the cabin air intake. Its Cybertruck guidance discusses front-door ice breakers; that is separate from the reported headlight-area buildup.

How to prepare the truck before driving in snow
- Inspect the lights and front ledge. Before setting off, check that snow or ice has not accumulated in front of or over the headlights. Clear any material that could obstruct the lights.
- Clear other exterior surfaces and visibility equipment. Follow Tesla’s guidance to remove snow and ice from the vehicle’s exterior and to check cameras. Clear the windshield, windows, mirrors, and wiper so they can be used as intended.
- Use the right tool carefully. A vehicle-safe snow brush and ice scraper can help remove buildup. They are clearing tools, not a permanent design fix or a guarantee that visibility will remain unobstructed.
- Use Defrost Truck for the areas Tesla identifies. The manual describes it for the windshield, windows, mirrors, and charge port; it does not establish that it clears the headlight ledge.
- Recheck if conditions cause fresh accumulation. Snow can continue to collect or melt and refreeze. If the headlights become obstructed, stop somewhere safe and clear them before continuing.
Snow-clearing tools are different from traction equipment
A brush and scraper address snow or ice covering vehicle surfaces. Winter tires and tire chains address traction on cold, snowy, or icy roads; neither is a remedy for obscured headlights.
Tesla recommends winter tires for cold-weather or snow-and-ice driving and says to install a complete set of four. Its Cybertruck tire guidance recommends 285 König XD-16 Pro chains. Check current fitment and local requirements before buying or using chains. These recommendations concern traction, not the reported buildup near the lights.
