Subaru has put the BRAT back in front of a broad motorsport audience with the Brataroo, a bespoke Gymkhana build based on a 1978 BRAT. That makes a revival an especially timely idea—but it is not a production-car announcement. The case for a modern BRAT rests on the original’s distinctive small, four-wheel-drive utility and fun, not on mistaking a competition tribute for a road-car preview.
Is Subaru bringing back the BRAT?
No production BRAT revival has been announced in the official Subaru newsroom material reviewed as of October 8, 2026. Subaru and Hoonigan have announced and shown the Brataroo, but it is a one-off motorsport build and heritage tribute—not a confirmed future model. That distinction matters: a prominent tribute can renew interest in a name without establishing that Subaru plans to sell a new vehicle.
The timing argument is editorial, not proof of buyer demand or business viability. The Brataroo has made the name visible again; whether a production successor would attract enough buyers, meet current requirements, and make commercial sense is not established by the available official material.
What is the Subaru Brataroo?
Subaru Motorsports USA and Hoonigan introduced the Brataroo at SEMA on November 4, 2025, describing it as a bespoke 1978 BRAT engineered for Gymkhana. Subaru Motorsports USA called it “a 1978 Subaru BRAT engineered to take the viral series to new heights, both literally and figuratively.” The build later appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2026; Subaru reported that it placed second in the Shoot-Out Modified class and sixth overall.

Its headline specifications underline how far it is from an everyday vehicle: Subaru Motorsports USA lists about 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque from a bespoke turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. Those figures belong to the purpose-built Brataroo, not to a proposed or likely road-going BRAT.
Why does a BRAT revival feel timely?
The original had a clear identity
Subaru’s history dates the BRAT’s introduction to 1977. It was a small dual-range 4WD vehicle with two bucket seats fixed in its open bed—a combination that made utility and playfulness part of the same design. That formula is more distinctive than a generic retro appearance: a successor would have a recognizable purpose to reinterpret.

The Brataroo has reintroduced the name
The Gymkhana car gives Subaru a vivid way to revisit that identity in front of motorsport fans. Subaru also described the Brataroo as a modern tribute to the 1978 BRAT ahead of its Goodwood appearance. That renewed visibility makes this a natural moment to discuss what the name could mean today, while leaving the production question open.
A revival could mean more than styling
A meaningful modern BRAT would need to translate the original’s compact utility-and-fun character into a vehicle that works for current owners. A retro grille or throwback paint alone would not recreate the original idea. The harder choices would involve what the bed is for, how many people the vehicle carries, and how it balances practical use with a more playful identity.

What might a modern small BRAT need to get right?
There are no announced production versions to compare, so these are design questions rather than Subaru specifications or predictions.
| Decision | What a successor could prioritize | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | A compact utility pickup built around useful carrying ability, or a lifestyle-focused open-bed vehicle that puts character and recreation first. | Subaru has not stated which role, if either, a production successor would serve. |
| Powertrain and traction | Preserve all-weather capability while addressing present-day efficiency and emissions requirements. | The official material does not establish a powertrain, drivetrain, or how those demands would be balanced. |
| Packaging | Make the bed genuinely useful, set a practical passenger capacity, and use any retro cues in service of the vehicle’s function. | No bed dimensions, seating layout, or production packaging have been announced. |
| Price and market case | Find a price and target audience that support the vehicle’s intended mix of utility and lifestyle appeal. | No target price, demand data, or business case is established in the official material reviewed. |
The Brataroo cannot answer those questions for a road car. Its competition power and equipment demonstrate the tribute’s performance brief, not a specification Subaru has proposed for customers.

Could Subaru make a modern small pickup?
The BRAT’s history gives the idea a coherent starting point, but it does not settle the practical or commercial hurdles. A compact pickup would need a clear reason to exist alongside other vehicles: for example, genuinely useful bed space, approachable dimensions, or a particular all-weather role. A lifestyle-focused version could emphasize a more recreational character, but would still need to justify its passenger and cargo compromises.
The available official sources do not establish current demand, expected sales, production feasibility, or a likely price. Without those facts, it is more accurate to call a small BRAT revival an appealing possibility than a probable product. The Brataroo makes the conversation timely; it does not supply the business case.

What can BRAT owners use when restoring an original?
For owners working on an existing vehicle, Haynes lists a print repair manual covering BRAT pick-ups from 1981–1982. Check the model year and configuration against the listing before relying on it: that stated coverage does not mean the manual applies to every BRAT.
