Harley-Davidson’s Revolution Max is a liquid-cooled, 60-degree V-twin family built around modern valvetrain technology and a design in which the engine also helps carry the motorcycle’s structural loads. Its standout features include dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, dual downdraft throttle bodies and counterbalancing. Those features describe the engine’s architecture; Harley-Davidson’s claims about weight, rigidity and powerband are manufacturer design goals, not independently measured results in the sources cited here.
What is different about the Revolution Max design?
Harley-Davidson identifies the Revolution Max as a 60-degree, liquid-cooled V-twin. Unlike a traditional pushrod layout, it uses double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four-valve cylinder heads. The company also lists variable valve timing, two downdraft throttle bodies and counterbalancing among the family’s features. The engine and six-speed transmission share a common case. Harley-Davidson’s engine-history overview says the architecture is optimized for light weight and a broad powerband that builds to high-rpm power.
Liquid cooling
Harley-Davidson says the Revolution Max engines in its 2025 Sport and Adventure Touring motorcycles are liquid-cooled. The company describes liquid cooling as helping maintain more consistent engine temperatures and meet global emissions regulations. That is a manufacturer explanation, not an independent measurement of emissions or operating temperatures. Harley-Davidson’s current cruiser models use Milwaukee-Eight engines with air/oil cooling, so neither cooling system should be generalized to every Harley-Davidson V-twin. The company’s cooling explainer describes the distinction.
Engine as a structural component
On Revolution Max motorcycles, the engine is designed to serve as a load-bearing part of the chassis rather than simply sit inside a separate frame structure. Harley-Davidson says this approach reduces overall motorcycle weight; its 2025 Pan America 1250 ST page also says it improves rigidity. These are the company’s stated design rationales: the cited material does not quantify the weight or rigidity change against a motorcycle with a non-structural engine. The 2025 Pan America 1250 ST specifications describe the arrangement.

How do the 975 and 1250 versions differ?
Harley-Davidson describes the family as available in 975cc and 1250cc displacements, but displacement alone does not define a single output rating. The company’s 2025 owner’s manual lists the Nightster and Nightster Special at 975 cm³ and the Sportster S at 1252 cm³. The larger-displacement engine also appears in 2025 Pan America 1250 models. Power and torque depend on the specific motorcycle application.
| 2025 motorcycle | Displacement | Manufacturer-listed output | Application |
| Nightster / Nightster Special | 975 cm³, per the 2025 owner’s manual | Not stated in the cited 2025 sources | Sport |
| Sportster S | 1252 cm³, per the 2025 owner’s manual | 121 hp and 93 ft-lb peak torque, per Harley-Davidson’s 2025 model page | Sport |
| Pan America 1250 Special | 1250 version; exact displacement not stated on the cited model page | 150 hp (112 kW), per Harley-Davidson’s 2025 model page; torque not stated there | Adventure Touring |
| Pan America 1250 ST | 1250 version; exact displacement not stated on the cited model page | 149 hp and 91 ft-lb peak torque, per Harley-Davidson’s 2025 model page | Adventure Touring |
These are model-specific figures published by Harley-Davidson for the 2025 motorcycles, not a controlled comparison between engines. The 1252 cm³ manual figure and the 1250 naming used for model versions are not contradictory: the badge is a model designation, while the manual gives a precise engine displacement for the Sportster S.

Which motorcycles use Revolution Max?
For the 2025 lineup covered by the cited sources, the family appears in Sport and Adventure Touring motorcycles. Model pages identify Revolution Max 1250 versions in the Pan America 1250 Special and Pan America 1250 ST; the owner’s manual covers the Nightster, Nightster Special and Sportster S engines. Availability and specifications can change by model year and market, so consult the relevant year’s local model page and manual when checking a particular bike.
What do the owner’s-manual specifications tell you?
The 2025 owner’s manual covers the Sportster S and Nightster engines as two-cylinder, four-cycle, 60-degree liquid-cooled V-twins with DOHC and a 12.0:1 compression ratio. For those covered models, it lists a 9500 rpm maximum, but notes that maximum rpm is limited until the engine reaches full operating temperature under the manual’s stated neutral and clutch conditions. The manual also specifies premium unleaded fuel and a six-speed constant-mesh transmission. These are specifications for the models and manual edition cited, not universal specifications for every Revolution Max application. The 2025 owner’s manual provides the operating details.

What the design features do—and what they do not prove
DOHC, four-valve heads and variable valve timing are the hardware behind Harley-Davidson’s stated goal of combining a broad powerband with high-rpm power. Liquid cooling is intended to help regulate temperatures, while counterbalancing addresses vibration. The shared engine-and-transmission case and load-bearing installation integrate the powertrain with the motorcycle structure. These points explain what the design is intended to achieve; they do not establish reliability, repair costs, fuel economy, real-world dyno performance or owner satisfaction. The cited sources are manufacturer material rather than independent comparative tests or durability data.
