Max Verstappen received a 10-place grid penalty at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps because Red Bull fitted his car with a fifth internal combustion engine (ICE). That exceeded his season allocation of power-unit elements, and under Formula 1’s rule the first excess of an allocation draws a 10-place drop. The phrase “will have” in the original title reflects pre-race reporting from July 2024. The penalty applied to that 2024 event, not to a current race.
How the engine change led to the penalty
The sequence began before the Belgian weekend. Motorsport.com, reporting on 24 July 2024, described the chain of events that left Red Bull with no allowance left for Verstappen’s power unit.
- Canadian Grand Prix practice: Verstappen’s car lost a power unit during practice, according to Motorsport.com’s account.
- Spain: Red Bull introduced his fourth power unit. Motorsport.com describes four power units as the annual maximum for a driver in 2024.
- Spa-Francorchamps: Red Bull fitted a fifth ICE. Because this exceeded the allocation, the penalty followed.
Formula 1’s explanation, published on 26 July 2024, confirms that Verstappen moved to a fifth ICE and that the penalty for a first excess of a power-unit element’s allocation is 10 places. The fifth engine was the trigger. Other components of the power unit were not the reason for this penalty.
How allocation penalties scale
Formula 1 applies the grid drop per component, and the number of places depends on how many times that component’s allocation has already been exceeded in the season. The rule as set out in the 26 July 2024 report works as follows.

| Situation | Grid penalty | How it applies |
|---|---|---|
| First excess of a power-unit element’s allocation | 10 places | Verstappen’s case at Spa, from the fifth ICE |
| Each later excess of the same allocation | 5 places | Penalties at the same event are cumulative |
| Combined drop greater than 15 places | Start from the back of the grid | Stated in the same report |
The cumulative rule matters for other drivers in the same weekend. Yuki Tsunoda’s penalties in the same report involved several components, so his situation should not be read as a version of Verstappen’s single 10-place drop.
Why Red Bull chose Spa
Motorsport.com reported that Red Bull picked the Belgian Grand Prix to take the fifth engine and its grid penalty because overtaking at Spa was considered less difficult than at most circuits on the calendar. The report points to earlier Spa races in which drivers recovered from grid drops as the basis for that view.

This is the reporter’s account of the team’s reasoning and contextual comparisons, not a direct explanation from Red Bull. The reports cited here do not include a direct quote from a team representative on the choice. A grid drop at a circuit where passing is easier reduces the cost of the penalty, but it does not guarantee a strong race.

A grid penalty moves a driver back from the position reached in qualifying. The starting slot after the drop depends on the qualifying result and on any other penalties applied to the same driver. The 10-place figure alone does not give Verstappen’s final starting position, and the sources do not establish his race result.
