Luxury automakers keep V12 engines because a flagship engine can carry a marque’s history and give its top models a distinctive identity—not simply because 12 cylinders are the most efficient or technically necessary choice. Lamborghini illustrates how that identity can continue into a hybrid era, while Ferrari’s 2025 annual report shows V12s still represented in its model range.
What a V12 means to a luxury marque
A V12 is both an engine configuration and, for some brands, a recognizable part of the product story. A manufacturer can use it to connect a current flagship to earlier cars, distinguish that model from the rest of its range, and signal a particular kind of performance experience. The brand-story role is documented in Lamborghini’s own history; the broader idea that this distinction helps sell a flagship is a reasonable inference, not a measured claim about buyer preferences.

That distinction matters because the evidence does not establish that a V12 is inherently more powerful, efficient, reliable, or smooth than other engine layouts. Nor does it show that a V12 is required for luxury or performance. Its continued use is best understood as a combination of brand-specific heritage and product choice.

Lamborghini: a V12 lineage that has gone hybrid
From the 350 GT to the Aventador
Lamborghini traces its twelve-cylinder story to the 350 GT in 1963, with an engine designed by Giotto Bizzarrini. The company describes the V12 as a technology that helped establish its identity. Former chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani put its historical association this way: “In the 1960s, the V12 represented the pinnacle of technology, luxury, and sportiness.” Lamborghini’s account of its V12 history dates the modern naturally aspirated V12 version to the Aventador in 2011 and calls the Aventador its last pure naturally aspirated V12.

Revuelto keeps the V12 while adding electrification
Lamborghini’s next step was not simply to abandon the layout. Its 2023 LB744 technical announcement describes a 6.5-liter V12 in a high-performance hybrid architecture; LB744 became the Revuelto. The configuration matters: “V12” identifies the engine’s cylinder layout, while “hybrid” describes its pairing with electric-drive components. Electrification changes how the powertrain is built, but the combustion engine remains central to the car’s identity. The LB744 announcement details that approach.
Lamborghini presented hybridization as continuity as well as change. Chief Marketing and Sales Officer Federico Foschini said: “For us, innovation is fundamental, and thanks to the Revuelto we are stepping into the world of electrification while still staying true to our DNA, which is all about fun-to-drive and performance.” That is the company’s positioning, not independent evidence that every driver experiences the car in the same way. In 2023 Lamborghini also said its company-wide hybridization would begin in the first quarter of that year; that strategic statement should not be read as saying every V12 it made was already hybrid at the time. Lamborghini’s Revuelto announcement describes the brand’s framing.

Ferrari: V12s as part of a differentiated range
Ferrari’s 2025 annual report lists the Purosangue, 12Cilindri, and 12Cilindri Spider as V12 internal-combustion models. This is a dated snapshot of the range reported for 2025, not a guarantee that every model remains available in every market at publication.

Why keep a V12 when other powertrains are available?
- Heritage: Lamborghini explicitly links the V12 to its history, from the 350 GT to its current hybrid direction. Keeping the layout gives the company a technical thread across generations.
- Flagship distinction: A rare or recognizable engine can help mark a model out within a luxury range. This is a plausible product-strategy inference; the available sources do not quantify how much customers value cylinder count or establish the profitability of individual V12 models.
- Electrification without abandoning the engine: The Revuelto shows one manufacturer combining a V12 with hybrid technology rather than treating electrification as an automatic replacement for the engine.
- Different brands, different reasons: Rolls-Royce plc identifies heritage, trust, engineering, and customer relationships as strategic strengths, but that is group-level context—not a statement by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars explaining a V12 decision. Rolls-Royce plc’s strategy page cannot establish the automotive division’s plans.
