1. Identify the exact car
Start with the vehicle identification number (VIN), then record the model designation, model year, first-registration date, market specification, mileage and major equipment. Confirm the generation and engine configuration using the car’s documents and a marque specialist before relying on model-specific maintenance or campaign advice.

The differences matter: Rolls-Royce says Phantom VII was built from 2002 to 2017 and used a specially designed 6.75-litre V12 (Rolls-Royce Phantom history). A 2020 Ghost media document describes the new Ghost as using a 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 (2020 Ghost media information). Wraith is another V12 model with its own model history (Wraith Black Arrow announcement). These examples are not a complete model catalogue; use the specific car’s VIN and documentation to establish what applies.

Ask for dated, itemised invoices and repair records, along with any available dealer service history. Match the VIN and mileage shown on the paperwork to the car, and look for clear descriptions of the work, dates and servicing provider. Gaps or vague entries are questions to resolve, not proof by themselves that the car has been neglected.

Ask an authorised retailer or suitably equipped specialist which maintenance schedule applies to that exact year and market. The schedule, intervals and work required should not be assumed from another V12 model or generation.
3. Check recalls and manufacturer campaigns by VIN
Use the official recall lookup for the car’s market
For a US-market vehicle, enter its VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup. NHTSA says its lookup reports unrepaired safety recalls using information from the manufacturer. Outside the United States, use the applicable national recall authority.

A national safety-recall lookup is not a complete check of manufacturer service actions. Ask an authorised Rolls-Royce retailer to check the VIN in its current aftersales systems for applicable campaigns, and request confirmation of both eligibility and completed work.

Understand why old campaign notices are not universal fault lists
Rolls-Royce North America’s August 7, 2020 bulletin covered a number of Phantom RR11/RR12 vehicles produced from November 2018 through May 2019 for a front air-strut issue; the stated remedy was replacement of both front air struts (2020 Phantom bulletin). That production window and model scope do not establish that every Phantom, or every V12 Rolls-Royce, was affected.

A December 12, 2024 e-SIM software service action listed specified Phantom RR11/RR12, Ghost RR21/RR22, Spectre RR25 and Cullinan RR31 vehicles with the relevant option; dealer personnel were instructed to check affected vehicles through manufacturer aftersales systems (2024 e-SIM service-action bulletin). It illustrates how campaigns may depend on model code and equipment, and is not evidence of a mechanical V12 defect.
BMW Group’s 2010 announcement described a voluntary recall of approximately 198,000 specified V8- and V12-powered BMW and Rolls-Royce vehicles from model years 2002–2010. Its named Rolls-Royce scope included 2003–2010 Phantom and explicitly excluded Ghost from that campaign (BMW Group recall announcement). A historical announcement cannot establish the current status of an individual car: verify the VIN and whether required work was completed.

4. Commission a written specialist inspection
Arrange a pre-purchase inspection with a specialist familiar with the exact generation and its diagnostic systems. Agree the scope for that model and ask for a written report that separates observed findings from matters requiring further diagnosis.

- Safe operation and any warning messages or stored diagnostic findings.
- Powertrain operation and suspension function, including relevant repair history.
- Electronics, body and interior condition.
- Evidence of previous repairs and any areas that need further investigation.
Suspension stance, warning messages and past repairs need to be interpreted in context; visual observations alone may not identify the cause. Include the specific vehicle’s campaign status in the review, without treating a narrowly scoped campaign as a model-wide diagnosis.

5. Assess the seller and available support
Consider whether the seller can substantiate the car’s identity, mileage, service history and campaign work with records. An authorised retailer may be able to help with VIN-specific campaign checks and inspection options. Rolls-Royce’s announcement about its Barcelona retailer described Provenance pre-owned cars and aftersales service (Barcelona retailer announcement); this does not establish current stock or identical program terms elsewhere. Confirm local availability and written terms directly.
6. Compare candidates on evidence, not assumptions
Use the same evidence-based criteria for each car you are considering:
- How complete and consistent are its maintenance and repair records?
- Can recall and manufacturer-campaign status be verified for the VIN, including evidence of completed work?
- What did the specialist inspection find, and which issues need diagnosis or estimates?
- Are the model, year, market specification and equipment clearly documented?
- Can the seller support claims about the car and its history with records?
There is no universal annual repair figure or cost ranking established for all used V12 Rolls-Royces. Request written estimates for findings on the actual car and compare those alongside its records, condition and support arrangements. Low mileage alone does not establish good condition.
