Lexus says electrification is meant to do more than cut fuel use: it can improve performance, give customers powertrain choices suited to different markets and driving needs, and support the brand’s environmental goals. But the premise needs a qualification: Lexus has a broad range of hybrid SUVs in the U.S. lineup, while its current U.S. model list still includes the LC 500 and LC 500 Convertible as non-hybrid sports models. The company has expressed an ambition to electrify sports cars without confirming a specific production hybrid sports car or launch date.
Why Lexus is electrifying its lineup
Lexus presents electrification as a combination of engineering, customer choice and environmental responsibility. In its 2025 announcement for the new ES, the company said it has pursued luxury electrification since launching the RX 400h in 2005, with the aim of combining dynamic performance and environmental responsibility. It says a range of powertrains helps address different mobility needs as it works toward a carbon-neutral society.
That is a multi-pathway strategy, not a hybrid-only plan. Lexus describes its choices as HEVs (conventional hybrids), PHEVs (plug-in hybrids) and BEVs (battery-electric vehicles). The balance among them can vary by model and market.
Electrification is also a performance strategy
Lexus’s stated rationale is not limited to efficiency. It says electrified powertrains can help advance vehicle performance, and its 2025 ES announcement describes the brand’s objective as bringing dynamic performance together with environmental responsibility. That is the company’s stated aim; it does not establish that every electrified model will deliver the same kind of performance benefit.

Different powertrains give customers more choice
Some buyers want a conventional hybrid that does not need to be plugged in; others may prefer a plug-in hybrid with an electric-driving component, or a fully electric vehicle. Lexus says offering HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs lets it serve diverse needs and markets. Chief Engineer Kohei Chiashi described the new ES’s platform as supporting both HEV and BEV powertrains, widening the available electrified choices.
What Lexus’s U.S. lineup shows for 2026
Lexus’s U.S. model-year 2026 lineup lists several hybrid SUVs, including the LX Hybrid, NX Hybrid, RX Hybrid, TX Hybrid and UX Hybrid. It also lists plug-in-hybrid versions of the NX, RX and TX. Those categories show the breadth of electrified SUV choices, but “hybrid” and “plug-in hybrid” are distinct powertrain types.

This lineup is specific to the U.S. and the 2026 model year; model names and availability can differ in other countries. Lexus’s page lists the LC 500 and LC 500 Convertible separately from its electrified SUV models, so it would be inaccurate to say that every current Lexus sports car is hybrid.
What “hybrid” means in practice: the NX example
Lexus’s September 2026 European announcement illustrates two different hybrid setups in the updated NX range. The NX 350h is described as a self-charging full hybrid; the NX 450h+ is a plug-in hybrid. The distinction matters when comparing ownership needs: a plug-in hybrid is designed to be charged, while a conventional hybrid does not require an external charge.

The range claim applies to the announced European NX 450h+ and is not a verified U.S. EPA rating or a specification for an already available 2026 U.S. model. Lexus says European introduction begins in spring 2027. Its performance and efficiency statements describe the company’s expectations for the updated European models, rather than independent test results.
What Lexus has—and has not—said about hybrid sports cars
In a 2021 announcement, Lexus described sports models as an area of future development and said it wanted to create “sports models that continue to provide the fun of driving.” The company also said it would offer products suited to the needs of different countries and regions.

That statement expresses an ambition, not confirmation of a named production hybrid sports car. The official material cited here does not establish a specific future model, its powertrain or specifications, or a launch date. The current U.S. lineup’s separate listing of the LC 500 and LC 500 Convertible reinforces why broad claims that Lexus sports cars are already becoming hybrid should be avoided.

- Powertrain: Is it a conventional HEV, a plug-in PHEV or a fully electric BEV?
- Market and model year: Is the version sold in your country, and for which model year?
- Electric range and efficiency: Are the figures homologated for that market, or are they provisional estimates?
- Driving character: What performance and driving qualities does Lexus claim for that specific model?
- Ownership needs: If it is a PHEV, can you charge it regularly, and does its electric-driving capability suit your routine?
Lexus reported that electrified vehicles made up 52% of its global sales in 2024, in a 2025 announcement. That figure covers electrified vehicles broadly; it is not the share of sales that were hybrids alone, nor a 2026 sales figure.
