It moves and uses energy, but those two features on their own do not make something alive. Biology treats life as a cluster of traits, and a car has almost none of them in the way a living organism does.
Why movement and fuel use are not enough
The question usually starts with a fair observation: a car moves, burns fuel or draws electricity, and seems to “run” much like an animal runs on food. Those similarities are real, but they are not the test biologists use. Movement is not required of every living thing at every moment; a seed, a dormant bacterium, or a tree in winter may be doing very little visible motion and still be alive. Energy use alone is also not enough, because a flame, a battery, and a waterwheel all transform energy without being alive.
The difference lies in how the energy is used. A car’s engine converts fuel into motion through manufactured mechanisms that a designer specified. An organism’s energy processing is part of its own cellular activity, which keeps its internal chemistry running, repairs its structures, and supports growth. The car does not maintain itself; people service it.
The traits biologists use to describe life
NASA’s Astrobiology education materials describe life through a set of shared characteristics rather than a single test. Textbooks use similar lists, though the wording and number of items vary. The commonly cited traits are:
#1 Best Overall
- Made of zinc alloy with ABS plastic parts
- 5.9 inch x 2.2 inch x 1.8 inch(size)
- The two sides of doors could be opened, front and back covercould be opened too
- You can pull back the car, then it can move forwards with Lights and Sound
- Very suitable as children 4 years and up toys for birthday,Christmas gift, new year. Also it can be a gift for your boyfriend
- Cellular organization: living things are built from one or more cells.
- Energy processing: organisms take in energy and transform it to power their internal work.
- Growth and development: organisms grow from within, following a built-in developmental program.
- Homeostasis (regulation): organisms keep internal conditions within workable limits even when outside conditions change.
- Response to the environment: organisms sense and react to their surroundings.
- Reproduction: organisms produce offspring that carry heritable information.
- Adaptation and evolution: populations change over generations through inherited variation.

These lists are best read as a shared description of what living systems have in common, not as a formal checklist that settles every borderline case. The point is that a living thing shows many of these traits working together, and that they operate from inside the organism.

How a car compares with an organism
Setting a car beside an organism along the same axes makes the gap concrete:
| Characteristic | Organism (for example, a mouse) | Car |
|---|---|---|
| Cellular organization | Built from cells that carry out metabolism | Built from manufactured parts such as metal, glass, plastic and electronics; no cells |
| Energy processing | Metabolizes food inside its own cells to maintain itself | Engine or motor converts fuel or electricity into motion; the energy supply is refilled by people |
| Growth and development | Grows from within following a developmental program | Does not grow; it is assembled at a factory and later repaired or upgraded from outside |
| Homeostasis | Actively regulates temperature, chemistry and fluid balance | Some systems regulate temperature, but these are designed controls that stop working without outside maintenance |
| Response to environment | Senses and responds through biological sensing and behavior | Sensors and software respond to inputs as designed |
| Reproduction | Produces offspring that inherit genetic material | Not reproduced by the car itself; more cars are made by people in factories |
| Population-level evolution | Populations change through inherited variation and selection | Designs change through human decisions, not heritable variation in the vehicles |
Manufacturing is not biological reproduction
Cars are produced in large numbers, so it is tempting to call that reproduction. It is not. A new car is built by people following a design, with parts sourced from other manufacturers. Nothing inside an existing car copies its own instructions to make a successor. A living cell, by contrast, copies its own hereditary material and passes it on.

Repair is not healing
A damaged car can be repaired, and a wounded animal can heal. The difference is in who does the work. A healing organism repairs itself through its own cells. A car is repaired by a technician, using replacement parts and tools that are not part of the vehicle’s own biology.

Some edge cases are harder than a car. NASA’s educational page “How can we tell if something is alive or not?” at https://science.nasa.gov/astrobiology/learning-resources/alp/alive-or-not/ gives a working definition of life as “a self-sustaining chemical system capable of Darwinian evolution,” and notes that nonliving things may have some life-like characteristics without having all of them. NASA presents this as an educational definition rather than a settled scientific consensus, and biologists continue to debate boundary cases such as viruses, which replicate but depend on host cells for their own replication.

A car does not sit anywhere near that boundary. It has no self-sustaining chemistry, no heritable instructions for making copies of itself, and no capacity for Darwinian evolution. Its life-like features, such as motion, energy use and sensing, are real but are supplied and maintained by people.
The short version
An organism performs life processes itself, from the inside out. A car’s motion and operation depend on mechanisms that people designed and on external systems such as fuel stations, roads and repair shops. That is why a car can imitate some features of life without being a living thing.
- Movement and energy use are shared with many non-living systems.
- Life is judged by a cluster of traits working together, mostly generated from within.
- A car lacks cells, self-maintenance, growth, and heritable reproduction.
For a deeper look at the traits themselves, an introductory biology textbook offers more examples; OpenStax’s free biology text is one widely used option.
Bottom line: A car is not alive because it is manufactured rather than cellular, and because its motion and energy use come from designed machinery that people build, fuel and repair, not from biological processes the car performs on its own.
