Why Is My Remote Start Not Working? Troubleshooting Steps and Common Causes

Remote start problems are often caused by safety interlocks, weak batteries, incorrect button sequences, run-time limits, or vehicle faults. Use these checks to narrow down the cause safely.

Remote start usually refuses to operate because a safety interlock or vehicle condition is blocking it—not necessarily because the starter system has failed. Check the exact activation sequence, confirm the vehicle is in Park with the hood and monitored doors closed, switch off the hazards, and look for low-battery warnings or dashboard faults. Procedures and lockouts vary by year, make, model, market, and whether the system is factory-installed or aftermarket, so use the owner’s manual for your vehicle.

What to check first when remote start will not work

Start with conditions that commonly prevent activation. A remote starter may give no response, flash the lights, honk, or show a message when one of its required conditions is not met.

  • Make sure the transmission is in Park and the vehicle is not already running.
  • Close and latch the hood, doors, and liftgate if your system monitors them. A hood that looks shut but does not engage its safety switch can still block a start.
  • Turn off the hazard flashers and check that the alarm is not active.
  • Confirm the remote-start feature is enabled in the vehicle settings, and do not leave the key fob inside the vehicle if the system prevents starting with a key detected inside.
  • Check the dashboard for a warning light or message and note it before clearing codes or disconnecting a battery.

Interlocks differ between vehicles. Ram’s owner manual, for example, lists Park, closed doors and hood, hazards off, an inactive brake switch, adequate battery charge, minimum fuel, no active security system, and no illuminated malfunction indicator among its requirements. Ford owner-manual limitations include an active alarm, an open hood, not being in Park, the vehicle already being on, a disabled feature, or a low 12-volt or high-voltage battery. These are examples for the named manufacturers, not a universal checklist for every vehicle.

Make sure you are using the correct activation sequence

Some remote starters require a specific series of button presses, and a nearly depleted fob battery can make the timing harder to achieve. Follow the instructions for the vehicle rather than repeatedly pressing buttons at random.

  • Ram example: The cited Ram/Mopar owner manual instructs the driver to push and release the Remote Start button twice within five seconds.
  • Chevrolet example: Chevrolet says some vehicles require pressing Lock first, then pressing the looping-arrow button twice or holding it, depending on the vehicle.
  • Aftermarket system: Use the installation or transmitter manual; button combinations and feedback patterns are specific to the system.

Why does remote start start and then shut off?

A start followed by a quick shutdown often means the system detected a stop condition or could not confirm that the vehicle was operating safely. Depending on the system, possible causes include a hood or brake switch signal, the shifter not being in Park, a vehicle-generated stop request, a communication fault, or a system-specific run-time limit. If the engine starts and then stops, note the time to shutdown and any light flashes or horn pattern; those clues can help distinguish an interlock from a communication or vehicle fault.

Check the allowed run time and number of starts

Remote-start timers and retry allowances are model-specific. The cited 2022 Ram/Mopar manual describes a 15-minute cycle and allows two uses. Chevrolet’s cited guidance describes a 20-minute cycle and up to 40 minutes total; after reaching that allowance, the vehicle must be started and turned off normally before remote start can be used again. Do not assume those durations apply to a different model year or vehicle.

Could a weak battery be the reason?

Vehicle battery

A weak vehicle battery can prevent a remote start even when the key fob still locks and unlocks the doors. Ford lists low 12-volt or high-voltage battery condition as a limitation, while Ram requires adequate battery charge. If the vehicle has slow cranking, dim lights, battery warnings, or other electrical symptoms, investigate the vehicle battery rather than replacing the remote-start module first.

Key-fob or transmitter battery

If range has dropped, confirmation has become unreliable, or the transmitter works only very close to the vehicle, check its battery. A 2013 NHTSA-hosted remote-engine-start troubleshooting bulletin specifies a 3V lithium battery, says it should register 3V when tested under load, and gives approximately one year as its expected life under normal use. Battery type and replacement steps can vary, so verify the required size and procedure in the vehicle or transmitter manual.

What do honks or flashes mean on an aftermarket remote start?

Some systems signal the reason for a failed start with horn honks or light flashes. The NHTSA-hosted 2013 troubleshooting bulletin maps these honk counts for the system covered by its table:

Honk count Condition indicated in the bulletin
1 Hood safety switch active
2 Brake pedal depressed
3 Vehicle stop request
4 Over-rev
5 Missing CAN messages
6 Shifter not in Park
7 CAN error

These counts are not universal diagnostic codes. Check the exact installation manual before interpreting a sound or flash pattern; another system may use a different mapping or no such feedback at all.

Remote start stopped working after a battery change

First identify which battery was changed. If it was the key-fob battery, verify its type and polarity against the manual, then use the correct activation sequence. If the vehicle’s 12-volt battery was disconnected or replaced, do not assume a universal reset procedure: reinitialization and feature settings vary by vehicle and system. Check whether remote start is enabled, whether the vehicle displays a warning, and whether the manual specifies a relearn or reset. If other electrical functions also behave unusually, diagnose those vehicle-side symptoms before blaming the remote-start unit.

How to check valet or service mode

Valet or service mode can disable remote start on some aftermarket systems. The NHTSA-hosted bulletin includes service mode as a diagnostic condition, but there is no single exit sequence that applies to every system. Look up the transmitter or installed-system manual for the exact procedure and indicator. If you do not know the system brand or cannot identify its control switch, contact the installer rather than trying an unverified button sequence.

When to seek vehicle or installer diagnostics

If the basic interlocks and batteries check out, focus next on components that report whether starting is safe: the hood safety switch, brake-pedal switch, key-sense circuit, shifter position signal, antenna or receiver, wiring, and vehicle communication network. The NHTSA-hosted bulletin notes that several reported conditions may be vehicle-related rather than a failure of the remote-start component. A vehicle diagnostic trouble code or communication fault may need to be addressed before the remote-start system can operate.

  1. Record any dashboard warning, diagnostic trouble code, honk count, or flash pattern before clearing codes or disconnecting power.
  2. Check the owner or installation manual for the meaning of that signal and the relevant switch or interlock.
  3. Use a qualified dealer, remote-starter installer, or automotive electrical technician for switch, wiring, CAN, or module diagnosis. An OBD-II scanner may help identify vehicle trouble codes, but scanner coverage varies by vehicle and system.

Use remote start safely

Never start or run the engine in a closed garage or confined area. Ram/Mopar warns that exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless poisonous gas that can cause serious injury or death. Move the vehicle outdoors before using remote start, and follow the vehicle manual’s safety instructions.
