The symptom alone cannot identify the failed part. Before buying a replacement, check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls, use mirrors and direct observation whenever reversing, and have the system diagnosed for your exact make, model, year, and display system.
First, treat a blank camera as a visibility problem
Do not rely on the screen as your only view behind the vehicle while it is blank. Stop, check the area directly, use the inside rearview mirror and side mirrors, and make a shoulder check before moving. Ask a passenger to guide you when visibility is limited. If you cannot verify that the path is clear, do not reverse.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall documents warn that a blank, black, blue, inverted, or otherwise abnormal rearview image reduces the driver’s view behind the vehicle and can contribute to a crash. A warning message, an apparently normal display that shows no image, or an infotainment screen that remains on the previous menu all require the same cautious approach until the fault is corrected.

What a black or blank screen can mean
Several distinct failures produce a similar symptom. The visible behavior can help a technician choose the right diagnostic path, but none of these observations proves a particular failed component.

Documented hardware and software causes
Camera hardware can fail internally
NHTSA’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report 25E052, submitted August 26, 2025, describes thermal-fatigue cracks in microprocessor solder. The report states: “Thermal fatigue cracks in the microprocessor solder can cause the rearview camera to display a blank/black/blue or inverted screen to appear in place of the rearview image.” The affected components and part numbers belong to that particular recall population. They are not a way to identify the correct camera for another vehicle.
This type of defect can make a replacement camera the correct remedy, but only after the vehicle is confirmed to be included and the repair procedure identifies the camera as the failed part. A camera that looks physically intact can still have an internal electronic failure.
Software can interrupt, delay, or suppress the image
Software faults can occur in the camera, the radio or infotainment unit, or another control module that commands the display. A Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner recall documented a software deviation that could leave the previous display on screen or show a black screen. Mercedes-Benz USA’s campaign bulletin for that software update covered an estimated 126,179 vehicles in its 2022 campaign; that is a campaign population, not a general failure rate.

Mopar explains one current recall condition this way: “The recall addresses the radio software responsible for displaying the rearview camera image.” That statement applies to the specific recall described by Mopar, not to every vehicle with a blank display. Tesla has also described a rearview-image delay tied to a specified software configuration and provides a software remedy for the affected vehicles.
Follow this safe diagnostic sequence
- Describe the exact failure. Note whether the screen is black, blue, inverted, frozen, distorted, delayed, or still showing the prior infotainment page. Record whether the image returns intermittently and copy any warning message exactly. Note whether the problem occurs every time reverse is selected or only under certain conditions.
- Confirm the operating condition. With the vehicle stationary and safely secured, observe what the display does when reverse is selected. Do not repeatedly shift into reverse while moving or while people are behind the vehicle. Use the owner’s manual for the vehicle’s normal camera activation behavior.
- Check the VIN for recalls. Use the automaker’s official recall system and NHTSA’s recall lookup. Enter the complete VIN, not just the model name. Read the remedy and eligibility information for that individual vehicle. Recall remedies in documented cases include camera replacement, radio-software updates, and camera-software updates.
- Check whether the remedy is complete. A recall can appear in a vehicle’s history even after the repair has been performed, and a campaign may apply only to certain production dates, software versions, or equipment. Confirm the status and ask the dealer what repair is authorized for the VIN.
- Use only vehicle-specific owner checks. Follow the owner’s manual for any permitted settings check or software-update instruction. There is no universal, safely applicable sequence of fuse removals, resets, wiring probes, or trim disassembly for every vehicle.
- Arrange diagnosis if the recall does not resolve it. A qualified technician can test camera power and ground, communication or video signal, connectors, wiring, the display, and relevant control modules using the service information for that vehicle. Give the technician your symptom notes, VIN, warning text, and the date the problem began.
How to check recalls and software remedies
Recall coverage is vehicle-specific. A nearby vehicle of the same model may have a different camera, radio version, production date, or remedy status. Use the VIN search rather than assuming that a recall applies because an online forum describes a similar symptom.
What a recall result should tell you
- The campaign or recall number and the affected vehicle population.
- The defect description, such as a camera hardware failure or software that does not display the image correctly.
- The authorized remedy, which may be a camera replacement, a radio update, or a camera software update.
- Whether the repair is open, completed, or not applicable to the entered VIN.
- Where and how to schedule the repair and whether the remedy is provided without charge under the recall.
Mopar’s 2026 recall FAQ estimates 848,511 U.S.-market vehicles for its radio-software recall. That number describes only the vehicles covered by that named recall; it is not an estimate of how many backup cameras fail in the wider vehicle population. Tesla’s support information similarly combines a VIN lookup with a software remedy for the affected configuration. Follow the instructions attached to your own VIN.

Choosing the right repair route

When a replacement backup camera is appropriate
A replacement backup camera is a reasonable physical repair only when testing points to the camera hardware and the replacement is confirmed for the exact vehicle. Verify make, model, model year, body style, trim, factory camera option, connector, mounting arrangement, video format, and any required calibration or programming. Ask whether the part is new, remanufactured, or used, and check the seller’s warranty and return terms.

A camera may fit the opening yet use a different signal format, pinout, viewing angle, heater, microphone, or control protocol. If the vehicle requires calibration after replacement, the repair is incomplete until the calibration procedure and image check are performed.
Why universal fuse and reset advice can cause trouble
Online instructions often recommend pulling a fuse, disconnecting the battery, pressing a reset button, or probing a connector. Those actions are not universally safe or effective. Fuse locations and ratings differ; disconnecting power can erase settings or create additional warning lights; and probing a network or camera circuit can damage terminals or modules. A reset may temporarily clear a software state without repairing the underlying defect.

Use a reset only when the vehicle owner’s manual or manufacturer service instruction explicitly authorizes it for your model. Do not remove trim, expose airbag wiring, or test circuits with improvised equipment unless the vehicle-specific procedure and safety precautions call for it.

Good symptom information shortens diagnosis. Provide the VIN, vehicle mileage, exact date and conditions of the first failure, whether the screen is black or another color, whether the prior infotainment screen remains, how long any delay lasts, warning-message wording, and whether the fault changes after the vehicle has been parked or restarted. Tell the shop about recent battery work, body repairs, water intrusion, accessory installation, or software updates.

Important limits of recall statistics
Recall numbers show the size of a named campaign, not the probability that any individual vehicle will fail. The 126,179-vehicle Mercedes-Benz campaign estimate, the 848,511-vehicle Mopar U.S.-market estimate, and Tesla’s reported maximum 11-second delay all apply to defined vehicle or software populations. NHTSA’s cited 2.0-second figure appears in the specified Mercedes-Benz/Freightliner recall context alongside FMVSS 111 S5.5.3; it should not be treated as a universal repair threshold for every backup-camera system.
No broadly applicable statistic establishes how often backup-camera screens fail across all makes and models. The documented recalls demonstrate that both hardware and software failures occur, but they do not diagnose your vehicle or predict its likelihood of failure.
Bottom line for a blank backup-camera screen
Use mirrors and direct observation immediately, then check the VIN for an open recall and read the remedy for that exact vehicle. If no recall resolves the problem, have a qualified technician distinguish camera hardware from wiring, display, control-module, and software faults. Replace the camera only when diagnosis confirms the hardware failure and the part’s fitment is verified; a software remedy may be the correct fix for a screen that looks completely dead.
