GTP is drawing attention because it puts major manufacturers in IMSA’s top prototype class, links eligible cars to the FIA World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar category, and gives the field a high-tech identity that includes hybrid systems. But “hottest” is an impression, not a proven popularity statistic: the available official sources do not establish a measured surge in GTP viewership, attendance, or audience size.
What does GTP mean in racing?
GTP stands for Grand Touring Prototype. It is the top prototype class in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, one of the championship’s four classes. IMSA’s class explainer lists Acura, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac and Porsche among the manufacturers entered in GTP; entries can change from season to season, so that list is a snapshot rather than a permanent roster. Why has GTP become so visible?
Recognizable manufacturers give fans multiple stories to follow
At GTP’s launch, IMSA said nine cars from Acura, BMW, Cadillac and Porsche would compete at Daytona. Its later class explainer listed five manufacturers, adding Aston Martin. A field with several familiar marques creates manufacturer rivalries and gives fans more than one team or car to follow. Shared prototype rules connect two major endurance series
GTP is IMSA’s class name; Hypercar is the corresponding top-class label in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The categories are not identical labels, but the shared rules allow eligible LMDh prototypes to race in IMSA GTP and WEC Hypercar. In June 2024, IMSA and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) announced that homologations for LMDh and Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) prototypes had been extended through the end of the 2029 racing season. The joint announcement said six manufacturers were racing LMDh cars in IMSA GTP, WEC Hypercar, or both. That connection makes the cars relevant across championships rather than only in one series. Hybrid technology is part of the class identity, with an important exception
IMSA’s launch-era description presented GTP as a new prototype platform with a common hybrid system. However, not every GTP car is hybrid: IMSA’s class page identifies Aston Martin’s LMH entry as non-hybrid. The class therefore combines a prominent hybrid identity with different technical approaches among eligible cars. IMSA also promoted the launch platform as “the most sustainable” in North America, but that is the series’ own positioning, not an independent measurement of lifecycle emissions or environmental impact. The rules horizon supports long-term planning
The homologation extension through 2029 provides a defined regulatory horizon for the relevant prototype cars. It supports continuity for manufacturers and teams planning programs across the two series, but it does not guarantee that any particular manufacturer will compete for that entire period. Does the evidence show GTP is actually more popular?
Not by itself. The official material cited here documents class structure, manufacturer participation, technical context and an extended homologation period; it does not provide a year-over-year audience, attendance or viewership figure that proves GTP has become more popular or explains why. The nine-car Daytona launch field and the later five-manufacturer class listing are entry facts, not popularity measures. When comparing the categories, keep the championship and the car’s design route in view. GTP is IMSA’s class; Hypercar is the WEC class. LMDh cars can compete in both, while the broader prototype picture also includes LMH cars. The sources cited here establish that connection, but do not provide enough detail for a component-by-component comparison of current technical regulations. For a fan, the practical takeaway is that some of the same manufacturer prototypes and rivalries can carry across IMSA and WEC, even though each series has its own class identity and championship context.
