That is a promising first impression, not a production-car verdict: the cabin and software were unfinished, and the manufacturer-hosted test-track session was too brief to establish how the SUV rides in everyday use.
What the prototype drive revealed about ride comfort
Kirchner drove the GLC with EQ Technology at Mercedes-Benz’s Immendingen test and technology center in Germany, on a rainy day over the facility’s varied simulated-road surfaces. The car was camouflaged, its interior was covered, and infotainment software and cabin details were still being finalized. Mercedes also asked him not to use Auto regeneration because its calibration might not yet be complete.
His most favorable impression was the default Comfort suspension setting, which he said let the SUV waft along the highway with comfort approaching that of a current S-Class. He also liked the easy-to-calibrate one-pedal mode. As Kirchner put it, “The Comfort setting, however, is excellent.” That describes his experience in this prototype; it is not an instrumented measurement or a promise that every production configuration will feel the same. Ars Technica’s June 9, 2025 drive report also notes that shared air-suspension hardware does not make the GLC and S-Class identically tuned.
Why this is not yet a full road-test verdict
A test-track drive can show how a prototype responds to selected surfaces, but this session cannot settle ride quality on ordinary commutes, cabin usability, range, or charging performance. The drive was limited, the vehicle was still under development, and the reviewer said he had not spent enough time with it to render a solid final verdict.

The report also disclosed that Mercedes-Benz provided Kirchner’s flights from Detroit to Stuttgart and accommodation. Ars Technica says it does not accept paid editorial content. Those details provide context for the hosted drive; they do not turn the author’s observations into independent production-car testing.
What changed after the prototype report
Mercedes-Benz’s later U.S. production material identifies the vehicle as the 2027 GLC 400 4MATIC Electric. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from Kirchner’s prototype session:

The U.S. figures come from Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2026 quick reference guide for the 2027 model. The 22-minute charging estimate is tied to the guide’s stated charger categories and current; it should not be read as a guaranteed time at every public charger. The guide lists a $63,500 U.S. MSRP, excluding a $1,450 destination and delivery charge, and says dealership arrival is expected in fall 2026. Availability and transaction prices can vary. Mercedes-Benz USA’s GLC model information is the source for those U.S. specifications and timing.
Suspension equipment matters to the ride
The prototype Kirchner drove had air suspension. In its U.S. guide, Mercedes-Benz lists steel coil springs as standard and AIRMATIC air suspension as optional. The prototype’s comfortable ride therefore should not be taken as evidence that the standard-suspension version will ride identically; the report does not provide a direct comparison between the two setups.

Keep range claims tied to their market and test cycle
Mercedes-Benz Canada describes the Canadian-market electric GLC as having a preliminary range estimate above 640 km using a European-cycle standard, and says up to 300 km can be added in 10 minutes. That preliminary manufacturer claim is not directly comparable with the U.S. EPA range figures above. Mercedes-Benz Canada’s electric GLC page presents the Canadian-market information.
The June 2025 prototype report cited then-current Mercedes estimates of 650 km WLTP range and peak DC charging above 320 kW. Those are historical prototype-era estimates, not substitutes for the later U.S. guide’s model-specific figures. Ars Technica’s report is the source for those early estimates.

What winter testing does—and does not—establish
Mercedes-Benz says it tested the electric GLC in winter conditions in Sweden. Christoph Starzynski, the company’s vice president for overall vehicle development and integration, called it “a car without compromises” and said the winter tests demonstrated reliability and robustness under extreme conditions. That is the manufacturer’s account of its own testing, not an independent reliability finding. Mercedes-Benz Group’s winter-testing announcement provides the company’s description.

To judge whether the electric GLC’s comfortable prototype ride carries over, a production-car test needs to establish how the actual suspension and tire setup behaves on public roads. Range and charging claims also need to be judged on a like-for-like basis: the same market and test cycle for range, and the same charger conditions and state-of-charge window for charging time. The available figures here are manufacturer specifications and estimates; they do not establish real-world range or independently tested charging performance.
