Automakers are pairing the layout with turbocharging, mild-hybrid systems, plug-in hybrid powertrains and new combustion technology where its performance character and the vehicle’s architecture make sense. Mazda’s CX-90, BMW’s M cars and Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class show different reasons for developing the configuration again.
What “comeback” means for inline-six engines
The inline-six, or straight-six, places all six cylinders in one row. Its recent return is best understood as renewed development and use in particular vehicle lines, not a broad reversal of the industry’s shift toward other engine layouts, hybrids and battery-electric vehicles.
Modern turbocharging and electrification give manufacturers more ways to target power and efficiency while retaining an established engine configuration. The examples here are manufacturer announcements: they establish what those companies offer or plan, but they do not prove that an inline-six is inherently more efficient, less expensive or cleaner than a V6, a four-cylinder hybrid or an electric powertrain.
Why automakers are choosing the layout again
It suits some large, rear-drive-based vehicle architectures
An inline-six is physically long compared with a transverse four-cylinder or many V6 installations, so it does not fit every vehicle platform. Mazda’s approach illustrates the point: the company developed its 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six for the CX-90’s large platform and rear-biased all-wheel-drive layout, rather than presenting it as a universal solution. Mazda’s 2023 announcement describes that application.

It can preserve a performance-focused engine character
BMW is updating the S58 inline-six used in the M2, M3 and M4, with combustion technology intended to support high-load operation and regulatory compliance while retaining performance. That is a performance-led use case, not proof that the configuration is the best choice for every kind of car.
Electrification can take more than one form
Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 S-Class announcement pairs an inline-six with a 48-volt integrated starter-generator in some versions, while the S 580e combines an inline-six with an electric motor as a plug-in hybrid. Mazda likewise described its CX-90 inline-six as a mild-hybrid powertrain. These examples show that an inline-six can be part of different electrification strategies; they do not establish one standard recipe for the layout.

What the current examples show
Mazda CX-90: a turbocharged six for a large SUV
Mazda announced a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six for the 2024 CX-90, pairing it with a mild-hybrid system. For North America, Mazda North American Operations reported 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using recommended premium fuel. Those are manufacturer figures for this particular application, not an independent comparison with other engine layouts. Mazda’s announcement contains the specifications.
Mazda’s 2025 strategy says technologies developed for SKYACTIV-Z will also be applied to inline-six engines in its large-architecture products. The company’s strategy describes future plans, not a guarantee that every announced application or timetable will arrive unchanged. Mazda also frames its roadmap around an electrification transition; its combustion-engine development is part of that broader approach. Mazda’s 2025 strategy briefing sets out that plan.

BMW M2, M3 and M4: combustion development for performance and emissions requirements
BMW says its M Ignite system adds a small pre-chamber, with its own spark plug and coil, to the cylinder head. Under high load, ignition jets from that chamber ignite the main chamber’s mixture at multiple points. BMW says the approach speeds combustion, helps counter knock and lowers exhaust temperature; the company’s stated aims include lower fuel consumption at high load and meeting Euro 7 requirements.
BMW announced production starts of July 2026 for the M3 and M4 and August 2026 for the M2, with displacement and power outputs unchanged. These are the dates and claims in BMW’s announcement, not independently verified test results or confirmation of availability in every market. BMW’s M Ignite announcement describes the system and its planned rollout. In a separate interview, BMW M development chief Alexander Karajlovic said the company had maintained the engine’s familiar performance standard and improved it in certain driving situations. BMW M’s interview gives the company’s account.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class: 48-volt assistance or plug-in hybrid power
In its May 2026 U.S. S-Class announcement, Mercedes-Benz described the M 256 Evo inline-six in the S 500 as producing up to 443 lb-ft of torque, or up to 472 lb-ft briefly with overtorque. The described powertrain includes a 23-hp integrated starter-generator and a 48-volt electrical system. The S 580e plug-in hybrid combines an inline-six with an electric motor and has a stated 576-hp combined system output. These are Mercedes-Benz USA figures for the models and market in that announcement, not universal specifications for S-Class vehicles elsewhere. Mercedes-Benz USA’s release provides the details.

- Vehicle and platform fit: Check how the engine is packaged and what drive layout the vehicle uses. A long engine may suit one large, rear-drive-based platform and be impractical in another vehicle.
- Performance figures and conditions: Compare horsepower and torque alongside fuel requirements and any qualifications, such as temporary overtorque. Manufacturer numbers for different models are not automatically apples-to-apples.
- Hybrid architecture: Distinguish a 48-volt starter-generator or mild hybrid from a plug-in hybrid. The amount of electric assistance and how the vehicle is used matter.
- Fuel consumption and emissions: Use figures measured under the relevant regional test cycle, and compare like with like. The announcements cited here do not provide an independent cross-layout comparison.
- Purchase and ownership costs: Compare the specific vehicle’s price, servicing, fuel or charging needs, insurance and other costs for your market rather than assuming an engine layout determines them.
- Regional availability: Confirm the model, powertrain and specifications offered where you live; a manufacturer announcement for one market does not establish availability elsewhere.
The cited manufacturer sources give examples of individual applications, but they do not establish a broad independent ranking of inline-sixes against V6s, four-cylinder hybrids or battery-electric powertrains for efficiency, emissions, cost or packaging.
