For example, a sedan measuring about 194 inches is approximately 16.17 feet long. If its listed price is $26,000, the simple division produces a result near $1,608 per exterior foot. That number is not a published automotive statistic, and it does not establish that the sedan is a better buy than another vehicle. It merely quantifies the intuition that a long car can look inexpensive when its price is spread across a large physical package.
Why the phrase sticks
“Bargain by the foot” is vivid because exterior length is easy to see and easy to compare. A shopper can put two cars next to each other, notice that they occupy nearly the same curb length, and then see a large difference in their MSRPs. The language turns a complicated value judgment into a playful one-line comparison.
That simplicity is also the danger. A foot of hood, bumper, or rear overhang is not equivalent to a foot of passenger room. Two sedans with nearly identical lengths can have different wheelbases, seat positions, rooflines, drivetrains and cargo layouts. The metric measures the outside envelope, not the parts of the car a buyer actually uses.

The Malibu calculation uses 194.2 inches ÷ 12, or roughly 16.18 feet. Dividing each listed MSRP by that length gives approximately $1,595 at the low end and $1,947 at the high end. Those are calculations from the stated inputs, not figures published by Cars.com.
Toyota’s 2025 Crown prices demonstrate another issue: a current price list paired with an older dimension is not an apples-to-apples model-year comparison. Toyota’s 2022 U.S. return announcement reported 194 inches of overall length, 72.4 inches of width and a 112.2-inch wheelbase for the announced Crown. Before using those dimensions for a 2025 trim, verify that the specification did not change.
Why a long sedan can look inexpensive
A large physical package makes the price feel spread out
When a sedan is long, its price can appear modest relative to the amount of sheet metal and road presence visible from the outside. This is a perception effect, not proof that the manufacturer is giving away useful space. The same sticker price will always produce a lower dollar-per-foot figure for the longer of two otherwise identical cars.

Large sedans may sit below prestige pricing
A full-size sedan can be physically substantial without carrying the badge, materials or positioning associated with a prestige vehicle. If shoppers compare its MSRP with a shorter, more expensive model, the big sedan can seem like an unusually generous deal. The comparison is meaningful only if the cars are also considered on equipment, powertrain, warranty, comfort and operating cost.

Standard equipment changes the perceived deal
A sedan’s value impression depends on what is included at the quoted trim. Two cars with similar lengths and prices can differ in driver-assistance features, infotainment, seat adjustment, lighting, climate controls or safety equipment. A dollar-per-foot calculation ignores all of those differences, so it can reward a car that is physically large but sparsely equipped.
Why exterior length is a weak measure of real value
Length is not cabin space
Overall length includes the engine compartment, bumpers and structural areas that do not become passenger room. Wheelbase and interior packaging generally tell a buyer more about seating space, but even wheelbase is not a complete substitute for measured legroom, headroom and shoulder room. If rear-seat comfort matters, compare the manufacturer’s passenger dimensions and sit in the actual trim.
Length is not cargo usefulness
Trunk volume, opening shape, load-floor length and seat-folding design determine whether a sedan carries a stroller, luggage or a large box. A longer rear overhang does not guarantee a more useful trunk. Toyota presents cargo capacity and seating information separately on its Crown materials rather than treating exterior length as a proxy for utility.

Length says nothing about equipment or safety
Price per foot gives no credit for a stronger standard safety package, better headlights, more effective driver assistance or a more capable infotainment system. Check the exact trim’s standard and optional equipment instead of assuming that a larger body includes more technology.

It ignores the cost of driving and keeping the car
A vehicle can look cheap per foot and still be expensive over several years. Fuel or electricity use, insurance, maintenance, financing interest, depreciation, warranty coverage and reliability all affect the ownership decision. The available price and length figures do not quantify those costs, so no per-foot ranking can establish total value.

2025 Toyota Crown pricing
Toyota’s 2024 model information lists the 2025 Crown at four base MSRPs: $41,440 for XLE, $45,950 for Limited, $48,765 for Nightshade and $54,990 for Platinum. These are base prices, not necessarily the amount paid at a dealership. Options, destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, incentives and negotiation can change the final transaction price.
Toyota’s earlier announcement described a Crown 194 inches long, 72.4 inches wide and built on a 112.2-inch wheelbase. Because that dimensional source is from 2022 and the prices are for 2025, use the length as historical context unless a 2025 specification confirms it. The Crown is presented by Toyota on its full-size-car materials, but the cited figures alone do not support a market-wide claim that it is the cheapest or best-value full-size sedan.

Cars.com lists the 2025 Malibu at $25,800 to $31,500 and gives an overall length of 194.2 inches. Chevrolet’s current page says the 2025 model was the Malibu’s last year. That statement supplies useful lifecycle context, but it does not establish that every large sedan is ending or that the Malibu represents the entire class.

Using the listed numbers, the Malibu produces the lower illustrative dollar-per-foot result. That does not make it directly comparable with every Crown trim: the sources differ in model-year documentation, source type and vehicle positioning. Treat the arithmetic as an explanation of the phrase, not as a buying verdict.
How to make a fair sedan value comparison
If you want to use the per-foot idea without being misled by it, keep the playful calculation separate from the decision analysis.
- Match the geography and model year. Use U.S. figures with U.S. figures, and compare the same model year whenever possible. Do not pair an older dimension with a newer price without labeling the mismatch.
- Start with transaction price, then show MSRP. Record the base MSRP, destination charge, options, taxes, registration, dealer fees, incentives and the negotiated selling price. MSRP is a reference point, not a guarantee of what a buyer pays.
- Compare the exact trims. A base sedan and a top trim can differ substantially in powertrain, safety technology, comfort features and wheel-and-tire packages. Identify what is standard before comparing prices.
- Measure usable space. Compare front and rear passenger dimensions, seating layout, trunk volume and the shape of the cargo opening. Include the needs that matter to you, such as rear-facing child-seat clearance or luggage capacity.
- Record powertrain and efficiency. Note engine or hybrid system, transmission, drivetrain and the published fuel-economy or electric-consumption figures for the same configuration. A low purchase price can be offset by higher energy costs.
- Check ownership evidence. Look at warranty terms, scheduled service, insurance estimates, financing cost, reliability information and expected depreciation. These categories often matter more than a small difference in exterior length.
- Use price per foot only as a descriptive extra. Show the formula and the inputs, label the result as your calculation, and never let it replace the room, equipment and ownership comparison.
A practical checklist before calling a sedan a bargain
- Is the length measured in the same way for both vehicles?
- Are the prices from the same country, model year and trim level?
- Are you comparing base MSRP or an actual transaction price?
- Have destination fees, taxes, options and incentives been separated?
- Does the longer car actually provide more rear-seat room or cargo capacity?
- Are safety and convenience features standard on both trims?
- Could fuel, insurance, maintenance, financing or depreciation erase the apparent price advantage?
- Is one vehicle at the end of its production run, affecting availability or incentives?
The bottom line
Full-size sedans get described as “bargains by the foot” because their long bodies can make a modestly priced car look like a large amount of vehicle for the money. Dividing price by exterior length explains the joke and can provide a memorable first comparison. It cannot establish value by itself.

For the cited examples, the 2025 Malibu’s listed numbers work out to roughly $1,595 to $1,947 per exterior foot, while the 2025 Crown’s available prices should not be paired with its 2022 length without confirming the matching specification. The useful conclusion is not that one sedan wins a mathematical contest. It is that buyers should treat the per-foot figure as a conversation starter, then judge the cars on transaction price, usable space, equipment, efficiency and total ownership cost.
