Teams are balancing lap count, refuelling rules, pace and pit timing, so the fastest plan is often the one with the least tolerance for variation. Prevention depends on applying the current rules for the exact class and event, setting a deliberate margin, and updating the plan as the stint unfolds.
What a “fuel miscalculation” means in endurance racing
A miscalculation does not necessarily mean that a crew made an arithmetic mistake. It can mean that a correct calculation was built on an estimate that no longer matches the run. If a car consumes more than planned, completes fewer laps than expected, or reaches a refuelling decision with less usable fuel than the model assumed, the intended stint length and the real stint length separate.

The public material available on this subject does not establish a universal prediction formula, a standard reserve quantity, an average prediction error or a general failure rate. It also does not document a particular team’s private telemetry workflow. What can be explained reliably is the management problem: teams are trying to cover as much distance as possible while staying inside event-specific refuelling or energy limits.

Rules define what the plan is allowed to do
Endurance races do not share one fuel rule. The relevant limits can depend on the series, class, circuit and event edition. A plan that is valid for an IMSA GTP race is not automatically valid for an FIA World Endurance Championship LMP2 race, even when both involve long stints and pit stops.

The 2026 FIA WEC decision for the Le Mans LMP2 class illustrates how detailed those constraints can be. Its refuelling-time calculation specifies how laps are counted, including the first stint’s pre-race laps. That means the starting point for the first stint is a regulatory definition, not simply the moment the race clock reaches zero. The decision also sets out the refuelling procedure and the calculation context. Those provisions apply to that class and event decision; they should be checked against the complete, current regulations before being used operationally.
Optimization reduces the room for error
Refuelling is a strategic optimization problem. The objective described in a Le Mans refuelling explainer is to drive as long as possible without running out. Extending a stint can reduce the number or timing of pit stops, but the fuel level at which refuelling is permitted or useful can complicate the calculation. A plan that extracts every possible lap is efficient only if the estimate remains accurate enough to reach the next decision point.
That creates a direct trade-off. More aggressive stint targets can improve distance and pit-lane efficiency; a larger operating margin makes a shortfall less likely but may force an earlier stop or leave potential distance unused. The public explanation supports this trade-off, but it does not provide a universal “safe” number of litres or laps.

Fuel volume and stint energy are different accounting problems
| Aspect | WEC Le Mans LMP2 example | IMSA GTP example |
|---|---|---|
| Primary constraint described | Refuelling procedure and lap-counting provisions for the specified 2026 Le Mans decision. | A maximum stint-energy target set for each track. |
| What is being managed | Fuel use, stint distance and the conditions under which refuelling calculations apply. | Energy delivered during a stint, alongside fuel and pit strategy. |
| Geographic/event scope | Le Mans, LMP2, 2026 decision. | IMSA GTP; the published numerical illustration concerns Petit Le Mans in 2023. |
| Can the figures be reused universally? | No. The decision is event- and class-specific and may be amended. | No. The example values are historical and tied to one event context. |
IMSA’s explanation of GTP virtual-energy replenishment says the maximum stint-energy number is set for each track. Its Petit Le Mans example, published in 2023, listed 915 megajoules for Acura, 907 MJ for Porsche, and 903 MJ for Cadillac and BMW. Those values describe that article’s upcoming-event context; they are not current universal limits and should not be transferred to another race.
IMSA also states that the actual amount of fuel used and the way each car produces axle power are proprietary. A public reader therefore cannot reconstruct a team’s exact energy or fuel model from those figures alone. The numbers show the type of constraint, not a complete prediction method.

How a team builds a stint plan
1. Lock the rule set for the exact race
- Identify the series, class, circuit and event edition.
- Obtain the latest sporting, technical and event-specific documents, including amendments.
- Record definitions that affect the calculation: when a stint starts, which laps count, what refuelling procedure applies, and whether an energy ceiling is track-specific.
- Have the race-engineering group work from one controlled revision so that strategy, timing and pit crews use the same interpretation.
This step is more than administration. A changed lap-count rule or refuelling provision can alter the first stint and every subsequent timing assumption.
2. Set the intended stint and its objective
The team chooses what it is trying to optimize: maximum distance, a pit-stop sequence, track-position timing or a permitted energy target. The intended stint is a decision target, not a guarantee. It must be expressed in the units the applicable rules use—laps, fuel quantity, elapsed time, energy or a combination.
For a fuel-limited plan, a simple conceptual check is:
usable fuel at stint start − estimated consumption × planned laps ≥ team-defined finish margin
The margin in that expression is deliberately symbolic. The sources do not establish a standard reserve, and teams may set different internal thresholds. For a virtual-energy plan, the corresponding check is whether the intended use remains within the event’s maximum stint-energy allowance while still leaving the car enough usable fuel to complete the planned distance.

3. Reconcile refuelling and energy limits
A plan cannot treat fuel capacity, refuelling time and energy as independent. The car must arrive at the stop with a quantity and timing that make the permitted refuelling operation work. In GTP, a car may also have to manage how quickly it spends its stint-energy allowance: using more energy for pace can reduce the endurance available later in the stint.
Recommended Free Tools
John Doonan, identified by IMSA as its president, described the intended choice this way in the organization’s September 27, 2023 article: “But if we break it down to what are we trying to do – trying to give the drivers and teams the tools so if they want to push and use up what energy they have, if they want to trade endurance for pace – they can do that, and that hasn’t changed.” The quotation captures why a single consumption number is inadequate: the driver and team can trade endurance for speed within the rules.
4. Choose a margin without pretending it is universal
Running exactly to the calculated limit maximizes theoretical efficiency but leaves no allowance for the estimate being wrong. A margin can be represented as additional fuel, fewer target laps, a lower energy target or an earlier decision trigger. Its size is an internal risk choice, not a published endurance-racing constant.
The right question is not “What is the standard reserve?”—the available public sources do not identify one. It is “What level of uncertainty can this event, strategy and rule set tolerate, and when will the team abandon the aggressive target?”
5. Monitor the stint and update the forecast
Once the car is running, the plan becomes a comparison between expected distance and available fuel or regulated energy. The crew can compare the predicted end-of-stint state with the live state, then revise the next pit window or pace instruction if the two diverge. This is an operational inference from the documented management task, not a claim about a named team’s software or sensor layout.

A useful decision loop is:
- Check the remaining usable fuel or permitted stint energy against the laps still required.
- Recalculate the projected finish state using the latest consumption trend.
- Classify the result as on target, marginal or unable to meet the original stint.
- Move the stop, alter the stint objective or change the pace-and-endurance trade-off before the car reaches the limit.
Where plans can diverge from reality
The consumption estimate no longer represents the run
The central failure mode supported by the sources is a mismatch between planned use and actual use. Any factor that changes the real consumption or the distance required by the stint belongs in that comparison, but the cited material does not provide a verified list of causes, a frequency for each cause or a measured error distribution. It would therefore be misleading to present a fixed taxonomy—such as weather, traffic or setup—as an established explanation from these sources.
The strategy is optimized too close to the boundary
The longer the intended stint, the less slack remains if the estimate shifts. The Le Mans explanation directly supports this optimization challenge: the goal is to drive as long as possible without running out, while making the fuel level and refuelling process work correctly. A plan can be mathematically consistent and still be operationally fragile when it has no tolerance for divergence.
A rule change or counting interpretation is missed
The 2026 Le Mans LMP2 decision shows why lap accounting matters, especially for the first stint and its pre-race laps. Regulations and amendments can change. Using an older document, applying a provision from another class or counting from the wrong event-defined point can make every downstream fuel calculation wrong even if the arithmetic is flawless.
Private performance information is unavailable outside the team
IMSA’s statement that fuel use and axle-power production are proprietary sets a clear limit on public analysis. Published examples can explain the framework, but they cannot reveal a team’s calibrated consumption map, control logic or reserve policy. Claims that a particular organization always uses a specific reserve or prediction algorithm go beyond the evidence here.

Practical controls that reduce shortfall risk
Document control before the race
- Place the current event documents and amendments under version control.
- Highlight every definition that affects lap, fuel, refuelling or energy accounting.
- Record which values are rules, which are measured estimates and which are strategic choices.
- Brief every relevant role on the same first-stint starting point and counting convention.
Separate hard limits from estimates
A regulatory maximum is not the same thing as a predicted consumption rate. Keep them as separate fields in the plan. The maximum stint-energy value in an IMSA GTP event, for example, is a rule-set parameter; the car’s actual fuel use and axle-power behavior remain team-specific. Mixing the two makes a model look more certain than it is.

Use explicit go/no-go thresholds
Before the start, define the condition that causes a planned long stint to be shortened. The threshold may be expressed in projected laps remaining, fuel at the next stop or energy still available. Publishing a number as a universal recommendation would be unjustified, but making the trigger explicit prevents a crew from debating the basic decision only after the margin has disappeared.
Reconcile after every stint
Compare the planned and observed stint outcome: intended laps, actual laps, expected consumption, actual consumption and the resulting pit timing. Update the next stint’s estimate rather than carrying an unexamined forecast through the entire race. This feedback process is a logical safeguard; no public source cited here identifies a proprietary team implementation.
How the two rule examples should be read
The WEC and IMSA examples answer different questions. The 2026 Le Mans LMP2 decision demonstrates how an event can prescribe detailed lap-counting and refuelling calculations. IMSA’s GTP explanation demonstrates a framework in which each track has a maximum stint-energy target, with fuel use and axle-power production kept as proprietary performance information. One is not a conversion table for the other.
The IMSA figures—915 MJ for Acura, 907 MJ for Porsche, and 903 MJ for Cadillac and BMW—belong to the 2023 Petit Le Mans example. They should not be quoted as today’s limits, assumed to apply to every GTP circuit or used to infer a fuel quantity without the rest of the vehicle and event data.
What a reader can and cannot conclude from public information
- Supported: fuel planning is a constrained estimate; class- and event-specific rules shape it; maximizing stint length increases the optimization challenge; and teams must monitor the plan as the race develops.
- Not established: a universal formula, a standard reserve, a general failure rate, an average prediction error or a named team’s private prevention procedure.
- Required caution: verify the current regulations for the exact event before using any numerical rule, lap-counting provision or energy example.
The most defensible explanation of a shortfall is therefore straightforward: the planned stint and the actual fuel or regulated-energy requirement no longer matched, and the available margin was insufficient or the decision was not changed in time. Teams reduce that risk by controlling the rule interpretation, separating limits from estimates, choosing an explicit margin and continuously updating the plan.
