Ford’s September 2021 decision to stop manufacturing vehicles for sale in India was a company-specific profitability and strategy decision—not proof that India had no viable passenger-car market. Ford cited more than US$2 billion in operating losses over the previous decade, demand for its new vehicles that was weaker than forecast, industry overcapacity and an outlook it said could not support long-term profitability with local vehicle manufacturing. India’s passenger-vehicle market later grew further, but those later figures describe conditions years after Ford’s decision.
Why did Ford exit India?
On September 9, 2021, Ford announced that it would cease manufacturing vehicles for sale in India. The company said domestic vehicle manufacturing would stop immediately, with vehicle assembly at Sanand planned to wind down by the fourth quarter of 2021 and vehicle and engine manufacturing in Chennai by the second quarter of 2022. Those dates were the timelines Ford announced, not independent confirmation of when each shutdown was completed. Ford’s September 9, 2021 announcement.
Ford’s stated business reasons
Ford president and CEO Jim Farley said the company had accumulated more than $2 billion in operating losses over the prior 10 years and that demand for new vehicles had been much weaker than forecast. Ford India president and managing director Anurag Mehrotra said the company could not find a sustainable path to long-term profitability that included in-country vehicle manufacturing. He also cited persistent industry overcapacity and a lack of expected growth in India’s car market.
These are Ford’s explanations of its own outlook and operations. They do not establish that India as a whole lacked demand, nor do they show that one factor alone caused the exit. Ford’s announcement also said it had considered partnerships, platform sharing, contract manufacturing with other automakers and a possible sale of its plants. It described the plant sale as under consideration; it did not say that every option resulted in a completed deal.

What Ford planned to keep doing
The restructuring was not described as an overnight end to every Ford activity or customer obligation. In its 2021 announcement, Ford said it would focus on Ford Business Solutions and other retained operations, and continue customer parts, service and warranty support. It said it would maintain parts depots in Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Sanand and Kolkata, while dealer partners would shift from sales and service toward parts and service support. The announcement also described export-related activity.
These were commitments stated in 2021. They do not confirm that a particular part, repair or warranty service is available now in every location. Owners should check current local support for their vehicle, model year, warranty status and specific need before relying on availability.

India’s passenger-car market was not simply “too small”
Ford’s concern was whether its own vehicles, costs, capacity and expected demand could support profitable local manufacturing. National market totals answer a different question. SIAM reports 4,643,439 passenger vehicles sold domestically in FY2025-26, up 7.9% year on year, alongside 905,200 passenger-vehicle exports, up 17.5%. These figures were published after Ford’s 2021 announcement; they show later market scale and growth, not information available to Ford when it made its decision. SIAM annual statistics.
The longer comparison makes the distinction visible. SIAM reports growth in production, domestic sales and exports between FY2020-21 and FY2025-26. Production is not the same measure as domestic sales, and exports are not part of domestic sales.

All figures in the table are SIAM totals for the stated financial years. The comparison illustrates the market’s subsequent expansion; it does not establish what Ford’s sales, factory utilization or profit would have been if it had stayed.
The FY2024-25 milestone
SIAM reported 4,301,848 passenger-vehicle domestic sales in FY2024-25, then a record, with 2% growth over FY2023-24. SIAM director general Rajesh Menon described the result as the industry’s highest-ever passenger-vehicle sales at that time. Why a large market can still be difficult for an automaker
A growing national market does not guarantee that every manufacturer can earn an adequate return on local factories. The relevant comparison depends on the company’s own costs, products, capacity, expected demand and route to customers. Ford specifically pointed to its losses, weaker-than-forecast demand for its new vehicles and industry overcapacity; the company did not identify a single consumer preference, pricing issue or policy change as the sole explanation.
Export opportunities add another dimension, but they should not be mistaken for a definitive explanation of Ford’s decision. A Hyundai Motor India investor-published industry report, drawing on SIAM and CRISIL MI&A data, says domestic sales accounted for 85.4% of India’s passenger-vehicle market in fiscal 2023 and exports 14.6%, compared with an export share of 16.8% in fiscal 2019. It discusses global conditions and automaker priorities, and notes that foreign manufacturers including Ford, General Motors and Volkswagen had increased export focus amid stagnating domestic sales in earlier years. It also says the exits of Ford and GM and the COVID-19 pandemic affected later export volumes. This is industry context, not proof that export strategy alone drove Ford’s exit. Can Ford owners still get parts and service in India?
Ford said in September 2021 that it would continue parts, service and warranty support and maintain five parts depots. That dated commitment is useful context for owners of vehicles such as the EcoSport, but it cannot guarantee present-day stock or service access for a particular city, repair or vehicle. Confirm availability with a local Ford support channel or dealer before arranging a repair or buying a replacement part.
Has Ford returned to passenger-car sales or manufacturing in India?
The available official material does not settle whether Ford has since resumed passenger-car sales or domestic passenger-vehicle manufacturing in India. Ford’s continued corporate and customer-facing web presence is not, by itself, confirmation of a return to either activity. Without a newer authoritative announcement, the status should be treated as unresolved rather than described as a confirmed return or a definitively permanent absence.
