Ford CEO Jim Farley said taking apart a Tesla Model 3 and Chinese electric vehicles made Ford rethink how it measures EV cost and efficiency. In an interview with Monica Langley for Office Hours: Business Edition, he described a reported comparison in which the Mustang Mach-E had roughly a mile more wiring than the Model 3, adding about 70 pounds. His point was that extra weight can ripple through an electric vehicle’s design because the battery must move it. These are Farley’s reported interview remarks, not independently verified teardown results.
What Farley said Ford learned from taking apart a Tesla
Farley’s comments were reported in November 2025 from his interview with Monica Langley on Office Hours: Business Edition. “I was very humbled when we took apart the first Model 3 Tesla and started to take apart the Chinese vehicles,” he said. “It was shocking what we found.” Inc’s account of the interview reproduces the remarks and figures. They describe Ford’s assessment; no public Ford teardown report or independent verification of the specific comparison is established by the available coverage.
Why wiring weight matters more in an EV
Inc reported Farley’s comparison as roughly one additional mile of wiring in the Mach-E versus the Tesla Model 3, weighing about 70 pounds. An indexed interview transcript gives the distance as 1.6 kilometers and also relays Farley’s estimate that carrying the extra wiring weight required $200 in battery cost. That transcript page was not available to inspect, so the estimate should be understood as an interview statement, not a verified Ford specification.
The underlying engineering point is about the whole vehicle rather than one component in isolation. More wiring adds mass; an EV’s battery has to provide energy to move that mass, potentially increasing the battery capacity and cost needed to achieve a given range. Farley contrasted that system-level calculation with internal-combustion vehicle cost accounting: “We don’t do that [system-wide] way of looking at the cost in an internal combustion engine. All the math changes with an EV with that huge expensive battery,” he said in the interview, as quoted by Inc.

The comparison does not establish that one automaker’s entire vehicle is categorically better engineered. It is a specific reported example of how component choices can affect mass, battery requirements, and total vehicle economics.
How Ford made its EV business more visible
Ford reorganized its automotive business in 2022 into three units: Ford Model E for electric vehicles, Ford Pro for commercial vehicles, and Ford Blue for internal-combustion vehicles. Farley said the separation made EV performance and losses more visible to investors and helped create management accountability. Inc attributed an annual EV-loss figure of $5 billion to Farley, but its account does not establish that figure as current; it should not be read as a present-day result.

Farley also described a management preference for confronting difficult issues openly: “My ethos is take on the hardest problems as fast as you can and do it sometimes in public, because you’ll solve them quicker that way,” he said in the podcast interview, as reproduced by Inc. In that context, making the EV business’s economics visible was part of the response to the challenge, rather than a claim that restructuring alone solved it.

Subsequent coverage described Ford’s emphasis on more affordable EVs and a planned Universal EV Platform. Electrek’s November 2025 report said Ford expected a midsize electric pickup on the platform in 2027. That date is a forecast reported as part of Ford’s plan, not a confirmed delivery date, and launch plans can change.

The strategic connection to Farley’s teardown story is straightforward: if EV buyers need lower prices, an automaker must look beyond the sticker price of individual components. Vehicle mass, battery needs, packaging, and production economics interact. The reported wiring example illustrates the kind of system-level trade-off Farley said Ford needed to examine, but it is not a complete comparison of Ford, Tesla, and Chinese EVs across price, software, customer experience, or manufacturing scale.
