Fernando Alonso took his hands off the steering wheel on straights during the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix because he said excessive engine vibrations had left him losing feeling in his hands and feet. He retired after completing 32 laps; Aston Martin attributed the decision to his discomfort. The onboard footage circulated on social media, but no verified audience or view count is available.
What does the Fernando Alonso steering wheel footage show?
Motorsport.com reported that onboard footage from the March 15, 2026, Chinese Grand Prix showed Alonso briefly taking his hands off the wheel on straights and clenching his fists. The report said the clip gained traction on social media. That supports describing it as circulating or attracting attention, but not assigning it a verified view count or calling it the most-watched clip.
Formula 1’s event page lists a separate 2026 Chinese Grand Prix “Top 10 Onboard Moments” video; its accessible page does not identify Alonso’s footage as one of those ten moments. The compilation should not be mistaken for the specific clip described by Motorsport.com.
Why did Alonso take his hands off the wheel?
Alonso told DAZN, in comments quoted by Motorsport.com, that the engine vibrations were “excessive” and that around lap 20 he began losing feeling in his hands and feet. He said, “Continuing until the end of the race while losing feeling in my hands and feet didn’t make much sense.” His explanation connects the gestures to discomfort and reduced feeling; it does not establish a medical diagnosis.

Formula 1’s official interview page also reported Alonso saying that vibrations were greater that day than in any other session of the weekend and contributed to his early retirement. These are Alonso’s descriptions, not an independent measurement of the vibration level.
Why did Alonso retire from the Chinese Grand Prix?
Aston Martin attributed the retirement to vibration-related discomfort. Honda México quoted team principal Mike Krack saying the team decided to retire Alonso because of that discomfort and was working with Honda to improve the problem. Honda trackside general manager and chief engineer Shintaro Orihara separately said, “We have improved the vibrations on the systems side, but it’s still an issue for driver comfort.”

Formula 1’s final classification records Alonso as a DNF after 32 laps. Krack’s statement, as quoted in Honda México’s March 16 release, places the retirement decision on lap 34. Those figures refer to different things: the official result records laps completed, while the team statement describes the lap associated with its decision and the pit sequence.
What is known about the vibration problem?
Alonso said the engine was the same as in Australia and that lower engine RPM could make the vibration feel less pronounced. He also explained that race situations could require higher RPM for overtaking or recharging. Honda’s comments indicate that vibration reduction remained an active driver-comfort issue, but the available statements do not provide an independent vibration measurement or a complete technical root-cause analysis.

The clip alone does not prove a specific engineering defect, an injury, or a formal FIA safety finding. Honda’s release said it was still investigating Lance Stroll’s separate retirement, which it described as suspected battery-related. The available account does not establish that the same fault caused both Aston Martin retirements.
