The distinction matters when comparing BYD with automakers by powertrain or market share.
What BYD reported for 2023
In a January 2, 2024 announcement, BYD said it sold 3,024,417 vehicles during calendar year 2023, a 61.9% year-over-year increase. The company also reported 341,043 sales in December, up 45% from December 2022. These are figures reported by BYD, not independently audited or reconciled in the cited sources. BYD’s announcement
How many of those vehicles were battery-electric?
Reuters described the annual mix as approximately 1.6 million battery-electric vehicles and 1.4 million plug-in hybrids. So the headline figure of more than 3 million is best understood as BYD’s broad vehicle or new-energy-vehicle sales total—not as more than 3 million battery-electric cars. Reuters’ 2023 sales report
For December, Reuters reported 340,178 battery and hybrid vehicles sold, including 190,754 all-electric vehicles. This is a monthly powertrain breakdown and should not be confused with BYD’s 341,043 total December sales reported by the company.

What “EV leader” means in this comparison
Leadership depends on which vehicles and period are counted. The International Energy Agency said BYD became the world’s best-selling battery-electric car company in the second half of 2023. Separately, when both BEVs and PHEVs are counted, the IEA put BYD’s share of global electric-car markets at just over 20% for 2023. The wider electric-car market in 2023
The IEA estimated that nearly 14 million new electric cars were registered worldwide in 2023, about 18% of all cars sold. Its passenger-car figures include both BEVs and PHEVs. China, Europe and the United States together accounted for nearly 95% of global electric-car sales, so the global share reflects a market concentrated in those regions. IEA: Trends in electric cars

BYD’s brands and exports
BYD said its Dynasty and Ocean series sold 2,877,353 units in 2023, a 55.3% increase, while DENZA sold 127,840. The company also identified YANGWANG and FANGCHENGBAO as brands launched in 2023, with deliveries beginning in November. Its announcement does not provide a complete, comparable model-by-model sales breakdown.
BYD reported exports of 242,765 units in 2023, up 334.2%, and said its vehicles reached more than 70 countries across six continents. Those are company-reported export figures; they should not be treated as equivalent to all overseas sales or registrations. BYD’s 2023 announcement
