The app or card that starts the session normally determines the end-user price you are charged, including any subscription, roaming fee or mark-up.
Before plugging in, compare the exact site, connector, tariff, energy rate and time-based fees in the payment channel you intend to use. Treat an old screenshot or a general network price as unreliable: tariffs can vary by location, country, charger and date.

The two apps are different pricing routes
A charge point operator (CPO) owns or runs the charging equipment and manages the site. A mobility service provider (MSP), also called an e-mobility service provider or eMSP, gives you an app, RFID card or other account for finding chargers, authorising sessions and paying. A roaming app is an MSP service that lets your account work on chargers operated by other networks.

When you use a roaming app, the roaming provider receives the session information from the operator and bills you under its own customer tariff. That tariff may include a negotiated wholesale rate, an account subscription, a roaming charge or a mark-up. The operator and the roaming provider can therefore be looking at the same physical connector while presenting different retail prices.

There is no universal rule that the direct app is cheaper. The direct tariff can be lower, equal to or higher than a roaming tariff, depending on the site, your subscription, the payment method and the provider’s commercial agreement.
How a roaming charging session is priced
- You select a connector. The app identifies a location, charger and connector. Availability and tariff data can be updated at different times, so confirm that the map pin and connector number match the equipment in front of you.
- You authorise through a provider. Starting with the operator’s app sends the authorisation through the CPO’s customer system. Starting with a roaming app sends it through the MSP’s system and its roaming relationship with that CPO.
- The charger records the session. The equipment measures delivered energy and may record elapsed time, connection time, start and stop times, and whether the vehicle remains connected after charging finishes.
- The provider applies its tariff. The billing system combines the session data with the tariff attached to your account, location and payment route. A roaming provider can add its own subscription treatment, transaction charge, roaming component or mark-up.
- You receive the provider’s bill. The amount shown in the app or on the receipt for the route that started the session is the amount to use when checking what you will pay. A price on a charger label or another app may refer to a different route.
ChargePoint explains that station owners or roaming partners set prices and that a third-party app can show a different charge from station signage. For roaming-partner stations, it says the price displayed in its app is the price billed through that app. That is an explanation of ChargePoint’s service, not a rule that every network uses the same arrangement.
Every component that can make the total different
Energy rate
The most visible figure is the amount per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Two providers can assign different p/kWh rates to the same connector. A tariff can also distinguish between AC and DC equipment, or between different power classes at one site.
Session, connection and time charges
Some tariffs add a fixed session fee, a fee per minute, an hourly charge, or a combination of energy and time. A provider may use a minimum charge, a maximum session charge or a flat price instead of—or in addition to—a kWh rate. ChargePoint’s customer information lists per-kWh, hourly, flat, minimum, maximum, overnight and idle pricing as possible bases and fees.
Idle, overstay and occupancy fees
An idle or overstay fee begins when the vehicle remains connected after a defined period or after charging has completed. One app may display that component prominently while another may show it in a tariff detail screen. Check whether the clock starts when the cable is plugged in, when energy delivery begins, or after a grace period; the trigger is provider-specific.

Subscriptions and discounts
An MSP subscription can reduce the energy rate, remove a session fee or change the roaming charge. The same app can therefore show different prices for two drivers at the same connector. Check that you are viewing the tariff attached to your account, rather than a non-member rate or a promotional plan.
Location, country and connector
Prices can differ between locations operated by the same network and between connectors at one location. IONITY states that its direct price depends on tariff, subscription status, country and location, and can vary between locations within the same country. Its guidance tells customers using an MSP to check that MSP’s charging app for the applicable price.
Payment method and taxes
Allego says its price can depend on charger type, location and payment method. A tariff may also present tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive amounts according to local rules and the provider’s display. Compare the tax treatment shown in both apps rather than assuming that two numerically similar rates have the same basis.
Operator app versus roaming app

The table describes the usual roles, not a guarantee that every provider structures its tariffs identically. A CPO can offer more than one customer channel, and an MSP can have different rates for different roaming partners.
What EU rules say about price disclosure
The European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) guidance recognises that a charging price can contain e-roaming costs and other fees applied by the MSP. Providers must make relevant price components available before the session begins. That requirement does not turn all networks into one tariff; it is a disclosure obligation.

For public chargers rated at 50 kW or more, the ad hoc price—that is, payment without a pre-existing contract—must be based on delivered energy per kWh. An occupancy fee per minute may also be added, but it must be proportionate. Lower-power ad hoc charging has its own ordering and disclosure requirements for the applicable components. The detailed rules apply within the EU framework and should not be assumed to govern chargers elsewhere.
In practice, open the tariff detail for the exact connector and read every component before authorising. A headline kWh figure may not be the complete cost if a session, connection or occupancy fee is also listed.
What UK guidance requires
UK Department for Transport guidance says price information must show the maximum charge before a session. Any roaming fee or marked-up price must be included in the same pence-per-kWh display format. The guidance also requires operators to enable payment through at least one external roaming provider, so drivers are not limited to a single network account.
These are UK-specific requirements. A charger in another country can follow a different disclosure format, even when the commercial reason for a price difference is similar. When travelling, use the rules and tariff display for the country where the charger is located.
Which app price will you actually pay?
You pay the price attached to the channel that authorises and bills your session, subject to the provider’s final calculation and any clearly disclosed adjustment. If you start with a roaming app, its displayed tariff is the relevant one for that roaming transaction; the operator’s direct-app price does not automatically replace it.

Use this verification sequence immediately before charging:
- Match the site. Confirm the street, site name, charger ID and connector number in both apps. Nearby chargers can have similar names but different tariffs.
- Match the hardware. Check the connector type and advertised power. Do not compare an AC connector in one app with a DC connector in another.
- Open tariff details. Record the p/kWh figure and whether it is tax-inclusive. Look for a session fee, minute or hourly rate, minimum or maximum charge, overnight rule, idle fee and grace period.
- Check your account status. Confirm the selected subscription, member discount, payment card and any country-specific setting.
- Read the pre-start total or maximum. Use the amount shown in the app or payment page that will actually start the session. In the UK, this should include the maximum charge and applicable roaming additions under the cited guidance.
- Save the receipt. Keep the session record with the date, time, connector and provider. It gives you the evidence needed if the final bill does not match the disclosed tariff.
A practical two-app comparison checklist

Why an app and the charger screen may disagree
The data was updated at different times
Operator and roaming systems exchange tariff and availability data, but an update may reach one system before another. A charger screen, roadside sign and two apps can temporarily show different information. Use the payment route’s current pre-start tariff and retain a record of what it displayed.
The apps identify different connectors
A location can contain several chargers with different power levels or ownership arrangements. Zoom in on the map, compare the connector ID and check the physical label before treating a difference as a pricing error.
A fee is hidden behind an expandable panel
Some interfaces show only the energy rate until you open “price details,” “tariff,” or a similar control. Expand every section before authorising, especially when the headline rate looks unusually low.

The session used another route than intended
A tap of an RFID card, an auto-start setting, vehicle integration or a payment terminal can authorise through a different provider from the app you were viewing. The receipt and transaction record identify the route that actually billed you.

The final amount reflects time or idle use
A comparison based only on kWh can miss a minute-based or overstay component. Check the session timeline and disconnect promptly when charging is complete if the tariff applies an occupancy fee.
Illustrative scenarios without assuming a universal “cheaper” app
Roaming costs more
An operator’s direct app lists its local energy tariff. A roaming provider lists the same connector at a higher rate because its customer tariff includes a roaming component or mark-up. The driver who starts through roaming pays that provider’s displayed rate.
Roaming costs less for a subscribed driver
An MSP subscription reduces the roaming energy rate or removes a session fee at a partner site. The operator’s public direct tariff is higher for a non-subscribed customer. The subscribed driver may save money through roaming at that location, even though another roaming account could be more expensive.

The headline rates match but totals differ
Both apps show the same p/kWh figure, but one adds a session fee or starts an idle charge sooner. The total cost differs even though the energy component is identical.
Two sites in one country have different prices
A network sets tariffs by location, charger type or local operating cost. Comparing a roaming listing at one site with the operator listing at another does not reveal a provider mark-up; it compares different tariff records.
What to do when the bill appears wrong
- Compare the receipt with the tariff screen saved before starting, including the connector ID and timestamp.
- Separate delivered-energy cost from session, time and idle components; a total that looks high may be explained by one of those lines.
- Check whether the transaction was authorised by the operator app, roaming app, RFID card or another automatic method.
- Contact the provider that billed the session first. A roaming provider normally handles its own customer invoice, while the CPO can investigate the meter record and site tariff.
- Provide the session ID, location, connector, start and stop times, meter readings if shown, and screenshots or receipts. Do not rely on a general price shown after the session, because tariffs can change.
Limits on comparing prices across networks
There is no supported market-wide statistic showing that roaming is usually cheaper or usually more expensive. Provider terms establish how their own tariffs and roaming arrangements work, but they do not prove that every network follows the same pricing model. A meaningful comparison uses one specific charger, one connector, one date and the same assumptions about subscription, charging duration and vehicle energy delivered.
The reliable habit is simple: identify who will bill you, inspect that provider’s complete tariff immediately before starting, and retain the session record. Roaming is an access arrangement—not a promise of one uniform price across all charging networks.
