It is most clearly understood in older carbureted vehicles, but vapor-related fuel-delivery problems can also occur in some modern systems. A hot stall or hard restart alone does not prove vapor lock; other faults can cause the same symptoms.
What vapor lock means
In a carbureted engine, fuel must travel through the delivery system and pass through a carburetor jet in a controlled way. In their 1935 paper, Neil MacCoull and E. M. Barber defined vapor lock in that historical carburetor context as “any interruption to the normal metering characteristics of a carburetor, due to vaporization of the fuel before passing through the carburetor jet.” Their paper describes two possible effects:
- Too lean: Vapor forming in the jet can interfere with fuel metering and leave the mixture excessively lean.
- Too rich: Vapor pressure in the float chamber can push fuel through the jet, creating an excessively rich condition known as percolation.
The National Bureau of Standards also described fuel boiling in lines, pumps, or carburetors, with misfire or engine stoppage as possible results. Its Letter Circular 991 is historical guidance, useful for understanding the mechanism and heat-shielding principle—not for establishing current fuel specifications.
Why heat can trigger it
Fuel volatility and temperature affect how readily fuel vapor forms. Ambient pressure and fuel-property differences associated with season and geography can also influence a fuel pump’s susceptibility to vapor lock, according to the abstract of Nissan engineer Naoaki Tanimura’s 2004 SAE paper on a pump test method. The exact conditions depend on the vehicle’s fuel-system design, so a hot day by itself does not identify the cause.

How the problem differs by fuel system
| System | How vapor can interfere | Practical emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Older carbureted system | Vapor before the carburetor jet can disrupt metering; vapor pressure in the float chamber can push fuel through and cause percolation. | For applicable layouts, reduce unnecessary heat exposure around fuel lines, pump, and carburetor. Confirm any change suits the vehicle. |
| Modern fuel-injected system | Pressure-regulated circuits and pump behavior require system-specific assessment; the carburetor explanation does not automatically apply. | Use vehicle-specific diagnosis and pressure checks rather than assuming a heat shield or other generic modification is the answer. |
Modern vehicles are not immune to vapor-related fuel-delivery trouble, but the evidence is system-specific. A 2022 SAE paper by Hyundai author Keunsoo Kim analyzes a hot-ambient engine stall associated with low-pressure fuel-pump behavior and vapor generated in the fuel tank. Its abstract documents a particular investigation; it does not establish how common that failure is across modern vehicles.
Why a hot stall is not a diagnosis
Stalling, misfire, rough running, or a delayed hot restart can be consistent with fuel-delivery trouble, but none is unique to vapor lock. In a 1986 roadside- and motorist-survey study, vapor lock was identified as a possible cause of 2% of the stalls examined; more than 95% were attributed to other listed causes, including mechanical or electrical problems, flat tires, overheating, accidents, and running out of fuel. That is a historical study result, not a current rate for today’s vehicles.

- Combination fuel lockoff and filter for use with liquid propane gas (LPG) or natural gas vapor (NGV) forklift engines
- Diaphragm made of hydrin to resist oil, fuel, and solvents
- Suitable for engines up to 325 HP at maximum working pressure of 312 PSI
- Filter element is serviceable with RK-VFF30 hydrin or RK-VFF30-2 silicone repair kit
- A pressure of 0.5" w.c. is required to open the lockoff
Porsche Cars North America’s November 29, 2021 technical bulletin 2129 advises technicians to rule out other causes before treating vapor lock as the likely culprit. For the specified vehicles, it describes reproducing the issue under warm, still conditions and checking low- and high-pressure delivery circuits for problems such as blockage or a faulty pump. This is professional, vehicle-specific guidance—not a general do-it-yourself test procedure.
How to avoid vapor lock
For an older carbureted vehicle
Where the original layout is susceptible, the supported prevention principle is to limit unnecessary heat exposure to fuel lines, the pump, and the carburetor. The National Bureau of Standards circular identifies shielding and favorable routing as measures for applicable older systems. A shield or rerouting is not a universal retrofit: parts must fit the particular vehicle and preserve safe fuel-system operation.

For a modern fuel-injected vehicle
Do not assume that wrapping a line, adding a generic electric pump, or replacing the pump will solve a hot-start complaint. The correct checks depend on the vehicle and may involve pressure data from more than one circuit. Porsche’s bulletin calls for professional diagnostic equipment and is intended for trained technicians; use the service information for the specific vehicle or consult a qualified technician.

- Record the circumstances. Note when the stall or hard restart occurs, including whether the engine is hot and the surrounding conditions.
- Identify the fuel-system design. A carbureted vehicle and a modern fuel-injected vehicle do not share one universal vapor-lock diagnosis or remedy.
- Have the system checked against vehicle service information. Ask for diagnosis of the appropriate fuel-delivery circuits and other plausible causes before authorizing parts or modifications.
Replacing a pump, altering fuel-line routing, or adding components based only on a hot restart symptom risks treating the wrong problem or creating a poor fit.
