GM has announced a production sequence at Fairfax Assembly in Kansas City, Kansas: the plant is building the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, gas-powered Equinox production is planned to begin there in mid-2027, and a next-generation Buick compact SUV is scheduled to follow in 2028. TechCrunch reported that GM identified the Buick as the Envision, which is currently built in China, and that Bolt production is expected to end in roughly a year and a half from January 22, 2026. GM has not published a precise Bolt end date.
What will Fairfax build, and when?
GM’s announced order is Bolt, then gas-powered Equinox, then a next-generation Buick compact SUV. The Equinox is scheduled to begin production at Fairfax in mid-2027; GM’s 2026 announcement places the Buick SUV at the plant in 2028. Those are plans, not guarantees of production dates.

GM’s January 29, 2026 workforce announcement describes the plant’s transition from Bolt to Equinox and then to the Buick compact SUV. Its October 2025 Bolt reveal said the 2027 car would be assembled at Fairfax with domestically and globally sourced parts. Fairfax is therefore the Bolt’s U.S. assembly site, but that does not mean every part is made in the United States.
When will Chevy Bolt production end?
GM has described the 2027 Bolt as a limited-run model, but its public announcements do not give a final production date. On January 22, 2026, TechCrunch reported that production was expected to end in roughly a year and a half. That is a reported expectation, not a precise date issued in a GM plant announcement.

GM’s later public plant listing continued to show the Bolt at Fairfax and Equinox production there scheduled for the following year. The listing supports the announced transition, but does not establish the Bolt’s exact last day or month of production.
Is Buick Envision production moving from China to the United States?
According to TechCrunch, GM confirmed the next-generation Buick Envision would move to Fairfax beginning in 2028; the current Envision is built in China. GM’s own announcement calls the incoming vehicle a “next-generation Buick compact SUV” and does not name the model. The Envision identification and its current production location should therefore be attributed to TechCrunch’s report rather than presented as wording from GM’s announcement.

Does the Bolt have a named electric successor at Fairfax?
GM said in June 2025 that it expected future investment at Fairfax for its next generation of affordable EVs. It has not named a replacement affordable EV model or announced a launch date in the cited statements. The Equinox and Buick plans set out the near-term vehicle sequence, but do not establish when or whether another EV will enter Fairfax production.
