For a 10-day East Coast road trip, focus on Nova Scotia, with an optional short detour into New Brunswick. This itinerary follows Nova Scotia’s official 10-day route through Halifax, the Bay of Fundy and Annapolis Valley, Cape Breton, the Eastern Shore, and the South Shore. It does not try to cover all of Atlantic Canada: New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador each deserve more time than a quick drive-through.

Choose your East Coast before you choose your route

“Atlantic Canada” comprises Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. For ten days behind the wheel, the most satisfying plan is to choose one province as the backbone and add a nearby region only if it fits naturally. Tourism Nova Scotia publishes a 10-day itinerary within Nova Scotia; Parks Canada’s regional examples show the trade-off: its Cabot Trail itinerary is 615 km over six days, its New Brunswick Fundy itinerary is 700 km over seven days, and its Prince Edward Island itinerary is 300 km over seven days. These are itinerary distances and durations, not promises about daily driving time. Parks Canada’s Atlantic Canada itineraries make clear why a ten-day trip should prioritize rather than race between provinces.

The day-by-day route below uses the province-scale sequence in Tourism Nova Scotia’s Essential Nova Scotia itinerary. Treat the days as regions and priorities, not fixed appointment times: road conditions, weather, opening dates, and how long you spend at each stop can change the pacing.

10-day Nova Scotia road trip itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Halifax and explore the waterfront

Start in Halifax, the route’s practical urban anchor. Keep the first day light: explore the waterfront and leave time to collect your rental car, settle in, and recover from travel. If you are arriving late, make this an arrival day rather than trying to add a long drive.

Day 2: Drive through the Annapolis Valley

Head toward the Annapolis Valley and give the day to its landscapes and communities rather than treating it as a quick pass-through. Tourism Nova Scotia’s official route pairs this region with the Bay of Fundy, so it can serve as a transition from Halifax toward the province’s tidal coast. Confirm seasonal business hours and any planned stops before setting out.

Day 3: Explore the Bay of Fundy and Annapolis Valley

Use a second day for the valley and nearby Fundy shoreline. The Bay’s tides shape what can be seen and when; if a specific tidal experience is a priority, check the current local tide information and plan around it. Tourism Nova Scotia’s itinerary describes the Bay’s water movement as “160 billion tonnes of water flow daily into the basin every 13 hours.” The page does not state a year or provide an underlying measurement citation, so treat that as the tourism authority’s description, not a dated scientific measurement.

Day 4: Travel to Cape Breton Island

Set aside the day to reach Cape Breton and get situated. This is a meaningful change of region, not a small local hop, so avoid loading the travel day with several timed attractions. Choose an overnight base that supports the next day’s plan—such as the Baddeck or Ingonish area—and check drive times for your exact stops.

Day 5: Begin the Cabot Trail

Give the Cabot Trail a full day for coastal viewpoints, short walks, and unhurried stops. Parks Canada’s itinerary assigns the 615-km Cabot Trail route six days, a useful reminder that it is not a one-afternoon excursion if you want time to explore. Decide in advance whether you are prioritizing the drive, hiking, or both; weather can affect the experience.

Day 6: Cape Breton Highlands National Park and Ingonish

Use another day for Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Ingonish area. Hiking and other park services may require an entry pass or fee; check current Parks Canada access rules, fees, trail conditions, and closures for your visit date. Keep the day flexible enough to adjust to weather or trail conditions.

Day 7: Baddeck and Louisbourg

Choose a Cape Breton day around Baddeck and, if it fits your interests and drive plan, the Fortress of Louisbourg area. The island has more to offer than the Cabot Trail, but adding stops means additional road time. Confirm current opening dates and hours directly before committing to a specific schedule.

Day 8: Eastern Shore beaches and coastal stops

Begin the return leg by exploring the Eastern Shore. Tourism Nova Scotia includes this coast in its provincial 10-day route; use the day for beaches and selected coastal stops rather than attempting to cover every community. Beach access, swimming conditions, and seasonal services vary, so check locally.

Day 9: Halifax Metro

Return to Halifax Metro for a buffer day and any city sights you missed at the start. Keeping Halifax near the end also gives you some flexibility if weather or a slower day has shifted the schedule. If your flight leaves early the next morning, stay close enough to the airport or departure point to avoid a rushed drive.

Day 10: South Shore, with a realistic finish

Use the final day for a South Shore outing if your departure time and location allow it. Tourism Nova Scotia’s route also includes Yarmouth and Acadian Shores, but trying to add every far-flung coastal region to the final day can turn the trip into a long drive. If you need to return a car or catch a flight, keep the South Shore visit close to your route—or use the day for a shorter Halifax-area stop instead.

Want to add New Brunswick? Make it a focused Fundy extension

A New Brunswick detour makes sense if the Hopewell Rocks and Bay of Fundy are central to your trip, but it means reducing time elsewhere in Nova Scotia. Tourism New Brunswick’s Fundy Coast road trip links Hopewell Rocks, Fundy National Park, Fundy Trail Provincial Park, Saint John, and the Fundy islands and Saint Andrews. Its full itinerary spans substantial coastal and island exploration, so for a ten-day vacation, choose a limited segment rather than assuming the whole route is a quick add-on. See Tourism New Brunswick’s Fundy Coast Road Trip for the regional route.

  • Prioritize tide timing: Tourism New Brunswick advises visitors to “check the tide table” for Hopewell Rocks and to experience both high and low tide. Use the current, date-specific table to plan your visit; a generic schedule may not match your day.
  • Verify operating dates: Tourism New Brunswick says Fundy Trail Provincial Park is open mid-May to mid-October. Confirm current dates and access conditions before building the drive around it.
  • Allow for added road and crossing logistics: Islands and coastal stops add complexity. Check the current operator information for any ferry or tour you plan to use.

For trip inspiration beyond these provincial routes, Destination Canada’s overview is available at Three road trips through Atlantic Canada.

When to go and what to verify

Tourism Nova Scotia says summer and fall are the best times to see whales in Nova Scotia. Whale-watching tours, like other seasonal activities, depend on the date, weather, and operator schedule; check availability for your travel window before planning a day around one.

  • Check current road conditions and realistic driving times for the specific route and stops you select.
  • Confirm park fees, passes, trail status, and service availability with Parks Canada before visiting Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
  • Check current tide tables for tidal sites, particularly if traveling to Hopewell Rocks.
  • Verify ferry schedules, tour departures, opening hours, and seasonal operating dates directly with the responsible operator or authority.

Keep the drive practical

Map the route before departure, save navigation for offline use where coverage may be unreliable, and check current road conditions each day. A current road atlas can be a useful paper backup on a multi-region drive, but it cannot replace live updates about closures, weather, or operating schedules. Build slack into the plan: the coast is best enjoyed when a scenic stop does not become a race to the next reservation.
