Why Do Some Diesel Engines Have Two Thermostats?

Two thermostats can manage different coolant paths or component groups, but many diesel engines use one. The purpose and opening sequence depend on the exact engine.

Some diesel engines use two thermostats to manage different coolant paths or separate cooling circuits. The arrangement is engine-specific: one documented 6.6 L design uses the pair to coordinate bypass and outlet flow, while a Ford 6.7 L example uses two thermostats in a secondary circuit serving different component groups. Other diesels use just one thermostat.

What two thermostats do

A thermostat helps regulate coolant flow as an engine warms. In a two-thermostat design, the pair may stage flow through different routes, or each thermostat may control a distinct part of the cooling system. The reason depends on the engine’s plumbing and specified operating strategy—not simply on the fact that it is a diesel.

How the arrangement works in specific diesel engines

2011 GMC 6.6 L diesel: staged bypass and outlet flow

The 2011 GMC 6.6 L diesel service description assigns different roles to its two thermostats. The front thermostat controls flow to both the bypass port and water outlet; the rear thermostat controls flow to the water outlet. As coolant temperature rises, the front unit changes bypass flow, and the rear unit begins opening outlet flow. At 85°C (185°F), the front thermostat’s secondary valve begins closing the bypass port while the rear thermostat begins opening flow to the water outlet. The service description says this engine requires two thermostats for correct coolant flow. See the 2011 GMC service description.

2012 Ford F-550 6.7 L: separate component groups in a secondary circuit

The 2012 Ford F-550 6.7 L description identifies a secondary cooling system separate from the primary engine cooling system. Its two thermostats operate independently: one controls flow associated with the EGR cooler and transmission cooler, while the other serves the charge-air cooler and fuel cooler. This is a different arrangement from the GMC example: the Ford pair divides control between component groups in a separate circuit. See the 2012 Ford system description.

Ford 6.7 L secondary-loop opening temperatures

A Ford technical document for a specified 6.7 L secondary cooling loop assigns a 20°C thermostat to the charge-air and fuel coolers, and a 45°C thermostat to the EGR and transmission coolers. These figures apply to that documented configuration; they are not general diesel thermostat specifications. See the Ford technical document.

Do both thermostats open at the same time?

Not necessarily. In the GMC 6.6 L example, the service description specifies a sequence: at 85°C (185°F), the front thermostat’s secondary valve starts closing the bypass port as the rear thermostat begins opening flow to the water outlet. In the cited Ford secondary-loop example, the two thermostats have different specified opening temperatures—20°C and 45°C—because they serve different component groups. Follow the service information for the exact engine rather than assuming the pair opens together.

Do all diesel engines have two thermostats?

No. A Cummins ISX11.9 service-manual extract describes a single-thermostat design introduced with the 2002 ISX, replacing earlier ISX versions that used two thermostats. That contrast shows why thermostat count must be checked by engine family and application rather than inferred from fuel type. See the Cummins ISX11.9 service information.

How to identify the setup on your engine

  • Confirm the engine family and vehicle model year; different engines can use different thermostat layouts.
  • Check the service description or current parts catalog for the number of separate thermostat units, their locations, and the coolant paths they control.
  • Distinguish a thermostat assembly with separate radiator and bypass outlets from an engine with two separate thermostats. An International DT 466/570/HT 570 manual extract describes an assembly with both outlet paths, but that alone does not establish that it contains two thermostat units. See the International manual extract.

What to check before replacing one

Do not choose a replacement based only on “diesel” or on the number of thermostats shown for another engine. Verify the exact engine family, vehicle application, model year, opening specification, and required seals against current service or catalog data. The examples above have different cooling architectures, and no universal two-thermostat set or part number applies to all diesels.
