The car has not been confirmed as built or delivered. The most recent source on its status is a 2024 retrospective that describes the road-car plan as stalled, so anyone asking “Whatever happened to the Dendrobium D-1?” should read the answer below as a status as of that reporting, not as a current corporate update.
What the Dendrobium D-1 was
Vanda Electrics, a Singapore electric-mobility company, introduced the Dendrobium as a two-seat, all-electric concept at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The company worked with Williams Advanced Engineering on the concept. Its roof and doors were designed to open in a synchronized sequence inspired by the dendrobium orchid, and that movement was the car’s most visible design idea.
The concept is worth more attention than a speed claim alone would earn. It paired a specific Singapore-inspired visual idea with an electric hypercar proposition, which is why the project was more than a generic high-output prototype. Vanda chief executive Larissa Tan put the intent this way in the 2017 announcement, reproduced by Prestige Electric Car: “The Dendrobium is inspired by nature and rooted in technology, a marriage of design and engineering – I can’t wait to reveal the car to the world in March.”
The performance figures and how far to trust them
Later published material associates the D-1 with 1,800 horsepower, a 0–62 mph time of 2.7 seconds, a top speed above 200 mph, and a projected mass of about 1,750 kg. These are announced or projected specifications. They are not measured results from a production vehicle, and no independent performance test of the car has been identified.

The public specification also changed. A contemporaneous 2017 report repeated an earlier estimate of four motors, 1,500 horsepower and 4,000 Nm of torque. The two sets of figures should be read side by side, not merged into one final specification.
| Figure | Earlier estimate (2017 report) | Later published figures |
|---|---|---|
| Motors | Four | Not stated |
| Power | 1,500 hp | 1,800 hp |
| Torque | 4,000 Nm | Not stated |
| 0–62 mph | Not stated | 2.7 seconds (projected) |
| Top speed | Not stated | Above 200 mph (projected) |
| Mass | Not stated | About 1,750 kg (projected) |
No independent statistical or market study supports these numbers, so they should be quoted as the company’s targets, with the source and date attached.
Production history
| Date | Development | Status as reported |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | Concept revealed at the Geneva Motor Show | Two-seat electric concept shown |
| July 2018 | Dendrobium Automotive Limited announces a UK development and production phase | An intention and plan; the announcement does not show that series production began |
| 2022 | Road-car production had been slated for this year | Per a 2024 Top Gear retrospective |
| 2024 | Retrospective describes the project as stalled | The announced road-car plan had not materialized as of that report |
The 2018 UK announcement is the clearest statement that Dendrobium intended to move the car into development and production. The later retrospective is the clearest statement that it did not happen on the announced schedule. Neither source establishes what the company has done since 2024.

The case for building it
Whether Dendrobium needs to produce the D-1 is an argument, not a proven necessity. The strongest version of the argument rests on three points.
It would show whether the design works beyond a concept
A show car can be built to look right from one angle, with no door seals to keep weatherproof, no crash structure to certify, and no service access to design for. Synchronized opening roof and doors are the feature most likely to fail the move from concept to road car, because they combine body structure, sealing, actuation and safety in one system. A production attempt would test whether that signature idea can be engineered into a car that opens reliably every day.
It would test the performance ambition against real engineering
The 1,800-horsepower and 2.7-second figures are the project’s most attention-grabbing claims. Production is where they would be exposed to real thermal limits, battery and motor packaging, weight control and validation. If the car were built and measured, the public would finally have output and acceleration figures that are not targets. If it were built and fell short, that would still be more useful than an unbuilt promise.

It would turn a distinctive Singapore-origin project into a vehicle
Many concept cars never leave the stand, and that is the outcome this project has so far reached. A production D-1 would give a small, design-led electric-car company from Singapore a finished product to judge on its own terms. That is a reasoned case about what the project would demonstrate, not a forecast about jobs, sales, investment or environmental impact, none of which the available sources measure.
What production would have to demonstrate
If a production car is announced, these are the checks that would separate a real vehicle from another concept:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- A production-spec roof and door mechanism that operates repeatedly, with the synchronized sequence shown on a car that customers could buy, not only on a show model.
- Measured power and acceleration under a stated test method, reported with the conditions, so the 1,800 hp and 2.7-second figures can be checked against them.
- Measured curb mass compared with the projected figure of about 1,750 kg.
- Evidence of road-legal certification in the markets where sales were planned, since the 2018 announcement referred to UK development and production.
- Named production partners or a production site, and delivered customer cars, as opposed to further concept displays.
Where the project stands
The most recent reporting cited here dates from 2024. It establishes that a road-car plan was announced, that production had been slated for 2022, and that the project was described as stalled. It does not establish whether Dendrobium has since resumed work, changed its plan, or abandoned the car.

Anyone checking the current position should look first for dated statements from Dendrobium Automotive Limited or Vanda Electrics, then for the concrete signs listed above. A dated production start, a named build partner or delivered customers would each be a meaningful change. Until one of those appears, the D-1 remains an announced concept whose production status is unresolved.
That is the reason the case for production matters: the car has already made its design and performance claims in public, and only a production attempt can test them.
Anyone reading the Dendrobium’s history in a single sitting should keep the following points separate: the concept was real and shown publicly, the specifications were announced targets, the 2018 plan was an intention, and the 2024 status was a stall, not a cancellation.

Some readers will ask whether the 1,800-horsepower car was ever built. The honest answer is that the reporting cited here does not show it was. Its proposition is clear enough to argue for, but not clear enough to report as delivered.
Read the figures as targets, the 2018 plan as an intention, and the 2024 report as the latest status available.
Production would not prove the car’s ambitions true, but it would be the only route to finding out.
Nothing else should be read into the D-1’s history beyond what these sources show.
