Conventional diesel engines often use less fuel per mile than comparable gasoline engines because their design converts fuel energy into useful work efficiently, especially under part-load conditions. Diesel fuel also contains more energy per gallon, which raises miles per gallon independently of engine efficiency. The size of the real-world difference depends on the vehicles being compared and how they are driven.
What “more efficient” means
Engine efficiency describes how much of a fuel’s energy becomes useful mechanical work. Miles per gallon (MPG) describes how far a vehicle travels on a gallon. Those measures are related but not interchangeable: diesel’s greater energy content per gallon can increase MPG even apart from differences in engine efficiency.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2010 technical primer gives approximate fuel-energy conversion ranges of 40–50% for current diesel engines and 25–35% for current gasoline spark-ignition engines. These are broad technical-context figures, not specifications for every engine or model year. For a vehicle decision, compare the actual vehicles’ ratings on the same test cycle and in the same class.
Why conventional diesel engines can convert fuel energy efficiently
Higher compression and expansion ratios
A diesel compresses air before injecting fuel. The heat produced by compression helps ignite the injected fuel. Higher compression and expansion ratios can allow an engine to extract more useful work from the fuel’s energy. The DOE primer reports typical compression-ratio ranges of 14–20 for diesel engines and 8–12 for gasoline engines; these are typical ranges, not universal limits.

Lean combustion
Diesel engines commonly operate with excess air relative to the amount of fuel being burned. Lean combustion is one of the inherent efficiency advantages identified by the DOE and the National Academies.
Less throttling at part load
A conventional gasoline engine commonly controls power by restricting incoming air with a throttle. Drawing air past that restriction takes work, creating a pumping loss. A diesel typically controls load more by metering fuel into compressed air, so it avoids some of that throttling loss, particularly when the engine is producing less than its maximum power.

- Multi-working condition adaptability: whether it is cold start in cold winter, high-load operation in hot summer, or frequent start-stop in urban congested road conditions, it can inject fuel stably and accurately to ensure that the engine is always in good working condition.
- Precise fuel injection timing control: strictly according to the engine's working cycle and combustion requirements, accurately control the fuel injection timing, so that fuel can be injected into the cylinder at the most appropriate time, improve combustion efficiency and enhance engine power output.
- High fuel atomization effect: it can highly atomize fuel into extremely fine particles, increase the contact area between fuel and air, promote fuel to burn more fully, improve the thermal efficiency of the engine and reduce fuel consumption.
- Improve power performance: By optimizing the combustion process, the engine will be provided with stronger and more sustained power output, which will enable the vehicle to accelerate more rapidly, drive more smoothly and improve the driving experience.

Other design contributors
DOE truck-partnership material also identifies relatively low engine speeds, which can reduce friction, and turbocharging, which can recover some exhaust energy, as contributors in some designs. Neither is the entire explanation, and the effects depend on the engine.
Why diesel fuel can deliver more miles per gallon
Diesel fuel contains more energy per gallon than gasoline. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes diesel as fuel that “contains more energy per gallon of fuel than gasoline (generally resulting in higher fuel economy)” in its Advanced Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles overview. This is a fuel property, not an engine thermodynamics effect: it helps explain MPG, but it should not be counted as a separate improvement in engine efficiency.

How large is the fuel-economy difference?
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported in 2009 that comparable light-duty diesel vehicles typically had a 20–40% fuel-economy advantage, depending on vehicle size and duty requirements. That dated range is not a prediction for every current diesel-and-gasoline pairing. Vehicle design, performance, load, driving conditions, and test cycle all affect the comparison. Check ratings for the specific vehicles under consideration rather than applying the old range as a rule.
Efficiency does not settle emissions or vehicle trade-offs
CO2 per gallon is different from CO2 per mile
Diesel has a higher carbon content per gallon. The National Academies reported in 2015 that burning a gallon of diesel produces approximately 15% more CO2 than burning a gallon of gasoline. That per-gallon figure does not by itself determine emissions per mile or lifecycle emissions; those comparisons also depend on fuel use and the assessment boundary.

Diesel construction and emissions controls
Diesel engines generally need stronger, heavier construction to withstand high compression and cylinder pressures, as noted in the EIA glossary. Modern diesel vehicles also need additional NOx-control technologies, such as selective catalytic reduction or NOx adsorption systems, according to NHTSA. These are relevant design considerations, not measures of fuel efficiency by themselves.

The comparison here is between conventional engine designs, not a fixed rule that every diesel beats every gasoline engine. The DOE notes that advanced combustion strategies can allow gasoline engines to use high compression ratios similar to diesels. The particular engine technology, vehicle, load, and driving conditions matter; a direct comparison should use the actual vehicles and equivalent test-cycle ratings.
