Why Do So Many Cars Have 8-Speed Automatic Transmissions Now?

Eight-speed automatics give automakers more choices for balancing acceleration and engine efficiency, but the gear count alone does not guarantee better fuel economy.

Eight-speed automatics give engineers more gear ratios to choose from, making it easier to balance acceleration, engine efficiency and relaxed cruising. They are common, but not universal: in U.S. model year 2024 production, 33% of new vehicles had eight-speed transmissions, according to the EPA.

How common are eight-speed transmissions?

Eight-speed transmissions became the most popular transmission type in model year 2019. By model year 2024, they were fitted to 33% of new vehicles produced for the U.S. market, according to the EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report. That makes them widespread, but not the transmission in most new vehicles: non-hybrid CVTs and transmissions with nine or more speeds each accounted for more than 20%, while six-speeds had fallen to 8%.

These figures describe U.S. production of new vehicles, including cars and trucks—not every vehicle on the road or the market in other countries.

Why add more gears?

Keep the engine in a useful operating range

An engine’s speed and load affect how efficiently it uses fuel. A transmission changes the relationship between engine speed and wheel speed, and additional ratios give its controls more options as the vehicle accelerates, cruises or climbs. The EPA puts it this way: “generally transmissions with more speeds offer more opportunity to operate the engine in the most efficient way possible.”

That is an opportunity, not a promise of better fuel economy. The engine, vehicle, transmission losses and control strategy all affect the result.

Balance launch, acceleration and cruising

A low first gear can provide strong leverage when a vehicle starts moving. Taller upper gears can let the engine turn more slowly at highway speed, while closer ratios between gears can limit how much engine speed drops during an upshift. Electronically managed controls choose when to shift based on factors such as engine output and driver demand; the EPA says advanced transmission electronics can optimize shifts for fuel efficiency.

The details vary by design. Toyota, for example, describes its Direct Shift transmissions as combining a widened gear and lockup range with reduced energy losses and compact, lighter construction. Those are Toyota’s descriptions of its own products, not features shared by every eight-speed transmission. Toyota’s Direct Shift transmission overview gives further detail.

Why eight speeds instead of six, ten or a CVT?

Eight is a common engineering and commercial choice, not a universal optimum. Automakers balance the desired performance and efficiency against vehicle packaging, cost, engine characteristics and their broader powertrain strategy. The EPA’s production data show that several alternatives remain significant; the sources do not establish one best ratio count for every vehicle.

Transmission type How it differs
Conventional automatic Uses a fixed set of ratios, often through planetary gearsets, with a torque converter. A lockup clutch can connect the converter more directly when conditions allow, reducing losses.
Dual-clutch transmission Works internally more like a manual transmission, can shift quickly and can avoid some resistance associated with a conventional torque converter. EPA production categories do not cleanly separate all dual-clutch transmissions.
CVT Provides continuously variable effective ratios rather than a fixed sequence of gears.
Hybrid power-split or CVT-style arrangement Strong hybrids often use hybrid-specific CVT or planetary power-split systems; mild hybrids commonly retain conventional transmissions.
Battery-electric transmission Most battery-electric vehicles generally use a single-speed transmission because their motors do not need the same range of gears as combustion engines. Some high-performance EVs use two speeds.

These architectures are not interchangeable simply by comparing a number of gears. A conventional automatic, DCT, CVT and hybrid power-split system work differently, so the label alone does not predict how a vehicle will feel or perform.

Do eight speeds improve gas mileage?

They can contribute, but the gear count alone does not determine the result. The EPA-hosted 2016 study Investigating the Effect of Advanced Automatic Transmissions on Fuel Consumption Using Vehicle Testing and Modeling found that the tested eight-speed Dodge Charger used 6.5% less fuel on the combined city/highway cycle than the tested five-speed version.

  • Reduced viscosity formulation improves fuel efficiency and cold-start performance
  • Provides excellent friction control for smooth and consistent shifting
  • Offers superior anti-shudder protection and wear resistance

That 6.5% is specific to those tested vehicles and conditions. The study’s simulations and other comparisons produced different results depending on assumptions such as vehicle performance, engine, torque-converter lockup and the comparison transmission. It attributes savings to both more efficient engine operation and changes in transmission and converter efficiency, so the result should not be read as the expected benefit of adding gears to any car.

What should you compare when choosing a car?

For a meaningful comparison, look at the complete vehicle and powertrain rather than treating “eight-speed” as a fuel-economy rating. Useful factors include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Transmission architecture: conventional automatic, DCT, CVT or hybrid power-split.
  • Fuel economy and acceleration figures for the specific vehicle and engine.
  • How the transmission is calibrated, including lockup behavior and shift response.
  • How the vehicle feels in the driving conditions that matter to you, such as stop-and-go traffic, hills or highway cruising.

The available evidence explains why more ratios can be useful, but it does not rank individual models. A model-by-model judgment requires comparing vehicles with their specific engines, transmission designs and performance figures.
