Cars With Bidirectional Charging You Could Buy in the U.S. for 2025

A U.S.-focused guide to 2025 model-year vehicles with documented V2L or V2H capability—and the equipment, software, and local checks buyers need to make.

For U.S. buyers considering 2025 model-year EVs, the clearest documented options depend on what you want to power. The Ford F-150 Lightning offers vehicle outlets and a separately equipped home-backup setup; select GM Ultium vehicles and the Kia EV9 are listed for vehicle-to-home (V2H); and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) for devices. These are different capabilities—not every car described as bidirectional can power a home or export energy to the grid.

What “bidirectional charging” means for a buyer

Bidirectional charging describes energy flowing from an EV battery to something outside the vehicle, but the label alone does not tell you what the car can do. The Union of Concerned Scientists distinguishes simple outlet-level vehicle-to-load functions from grid-integrated vehicle-to-grid systems, and notes that home backup needs compatible charging and switching equipment to isolate a home from a failed grid. Union of Concerned Scientists’ June 2025 report explains the distinction.

  • V2L (vehicle-to-load): Powers devices or tools through vehicle outlets or a compatible interface. This is not, by itself, whole-home backup.
  • V2H (vehicle-to-home): Supplies a residence, typically with a compatible charger, transfer or islanding equipment, and appropriate electrical installation.
  • V2G (vehicle-to-grid): Exports energy or provides grid services through compatible software and equipment, utility programs, and regulatory arrangements.

A V2H-capable vehicle does not automatically support V2G, and a vehicle outlet’s power rating should not be treated as the output available to a backed-up home.

Vehicle and evidence Documented capability What to confirm before purchase
2025 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro Power Onboard provides up to 9.6 kW from up to 11 vehicle outlets. Ford also describes Home Backup Power using the Charge Station Pro and available Home Integration System. Confirm trim and battery equipment, Charge Station Pro compatibility, Home Integration System availability, and installation requirements. The outlet rating applies to onboard outlets; it is not a stated home-backup discharge rating. Ford’s 2025 F-150 Lightning information describes the setup.
Select GM Ultium vehicles, 2025 model year GM lists the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac LYRIQ, Cadillac OPTIQ, and Cadillac Escalade IQ as V2H-capable. Check exact model-year, hardware, operating-system and software eligibility. GM identifies the PowerShift Charger and Vehicle-to-Home Enablement Kit, plus a properly equipped home and grid interconnection, as part of the setup. Certain eligible 2024 models require a dealer or over-the-air update. GM’s V2H information and GM Energy’s compatibility information provide details.
2025 Kia EV9 Kia’s Vehicle to Home service page identifies 2024 and 2025 EV9s and describes a V2H charger that lets the vehicle battery power a home. Confirm that the vehicle and home qualify, the charger and electrical work are available, and the service is offered in your area. Kia’s Vehicle to Home page sets out its service information.
2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Hyundai lists available V2L 120-volt outlets for supplying power inside or outside the vehicle. The cited information establishes device power, not whole-home V2H. Verify trim and market availability, then confirm that the intended device can be connected safely using supported equipment. Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 information describes V2L.

What the power figures do—and do not—tell you

Ford’s outlet output is not a home-backup rating

Ford states that the 2025 F-150 Lightning can provide up to 9.6 kW through up to 11 Pro Power Onboard outlets. That figure describes output at the vehicle’s outlets. It does not establish the power available through a particular home installation, nor does it apply to the other vehicles in this guide.

Charger capacity is not vehicle discharge output

Ford lists an 80-amp maximum charging output for the Charge Station Pro. That is the charger’s capability, not a V2H discharge figure. Do not compare it directly with the Lightning’s outlet output or use it to infer how much power a home will receive.

What a home-backup purchase involves

Buying a vehicle with a supported feature is only one part of a home-power system. Before choosing a model, identify the complete equipment and installation path for your property.

  1. Confirm the exact vehicle. Get eligibility for the model year, trim, battery hardware, and current software in writing or from the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation. GM specifically notes hardware, operating-system and software requirements; some eligible 2024 vehicles need an update.
  2. Identify the compatible charging and transfer equipment. Ford names the Charge Station Pro and available Home Integration System for Lightning home backup. GM names the PowerShift Charger and Vehicle-to-Home Enablement Kit. Kia describes a V2H charger for eligible EV9s. Do not assume a standard EV charger or vehicle outlet can substitute.
  3. Have the home and isolation design assessed. V2H generally requires electrical equipment that can safely disconnect the residence from a nonfunctioning grid. GM specifies a properly equipped home and grid interconnection; local electrical and utility requirements still apply.
  4. Check installation and service territory. Ask whether qualified installation, the required equipment, and any relevant utility program are currently offered at your address. Ford describes select utility partnerships and pilots, so availability may depend on location.
  5. Clarify the intended use and output. Decide whether you need outlets for a few devices or an installed system for home backup. Ask the installer and automaker what loads and output the complete configuration supports rather than extrapolating from an onboard-outlet figure.

Ford says the Home Integration System is sold separately through approved vendor Sunrun. Its Charge Station Pro specification sheet identifies the charger’s maximum charging output; it does not establish the discharge output of every installed system. Ford’s Home Integration System information and Ford’s support information should be checked for current territory, installation, and equipment availability.

Can these vehicles send energy back to the grid?

The cited vehicle examples establish outlet-level V2L or home-backup V2H capabilities; they do not establish that every listed vehicle can participate in V2G. Grid export or grid services require compatible vehicle software and hardware, approved equipment, a participating utility program, and applicable regulatory arrangements. Check all of those separately for your location. The existence of home backup is not proof that a utility will accept exported power or pay for it.

How to choose among the documented options

  • For vehicle outlets and a named home-backup system: Consider the F-150 Lightning if the specific truck and Ford equipment are available and suitable for your home. Treat Pro Power Onboard’s 9.6 kW maximum as an outlet figure.
  • For a manufacturer-listed V2H path across several models: GM lists select 2025 Ultium vehicles, but eligibility and required equipment are configuration-specific.
  • For a V2H option centered on one named SUV: Kia identifies 2024 and 2025 EV9s on its Vehicle to Home service page; confirm local service and home qualification.
  • For powering devices rather than a residence: Hyundai’s cited IONIQ 5 information documents V2L outlets. Do not treat that evidence as proof of home backup.

This selection does not establish total ownership cost, battery-warranty effects, real-world performance, or a comprehensive list of utility programs. Those points require confirmation for the exact vehicle, equipment and location.
