Why Do Bikers Put an X Over Their Motorcycle Headlights?

The X over a motorcycle headlight is commonly traced to racing and later became a café-racer style detail. Its history is not a road-safety recommendation.

Bikers are commonly said to have put tape in an X over glass motorcycle headlights to help hold the glass together if it shattered during a race. The X later became a café-racer and vintage-racing style detail. That reported history is not a reason to obscure a headlight on public roads: riders should keep it working and visible.

Why was tape put over motorcycle headlights?

The reported racing explanation

The commonly reported explanation is practical: tape was placed across a glass headlamp so it could help retain pieces if the lens broke during racing. The account is repeated in secondary reporting, rather than established by a primary historical record, so it is best understood as the usual explanation—not a proven origin story. AOL’s July 29, 2026 account describes this explanation and the marking’s later association with vintage racing.

A style cue today

On a modern bike, the X may simply be decorative. It can evoke café-racer or vintage-racing style, even when there is no race-day function. A grille or guard is another styling detail mentioned in secondary coverage, but that does not establish that a particular product is suitable for every motorcycle or road use.

Does an X make a motorcycle safer on the road?

The sources cited here do not test X-shaped tape or establish that it improves road safety. For ordinary riding, preserving a working, visible headlight matters. NHTSA guidance on motorcycle conspicuity identifies continuous headlight use as one way to increase a motorcycle’s visibility. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s rider guidance says to make sure the headlight works and is on day and night. Neither source specifically evaluates tape.

What do U.S. federal rules say about tape or headlight covers?

NHTSA’s August 4, 1983 interpretation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 addresses motorcycle headlamp covers—not X-shaped tape specifically. Chief Counsel Frank Berndt wrote, “We have reviewed this matter and have concluded that headlamp covers for motorcycles are not per se prohibited by Standard No. 108.” The interpretation also says a cover may not impair headlamp effectiveness. It is not an express ruling that X-shaped tape is permitted.

The agency’s December 8, 1982 letter had taken a broader position on clear glass or plastic shields. NHTSA’s 1983 letter modified the earlier opinions, so the 1982 letter should not be presented as the agency’s final view. Read the 1983 interpretation alongside the 1982 interpretation to see that chronology.
